Hey there, since last week I too have opened up a daily sketchbook, where I try to add something every day....and since it's bascially all conceptart that's featured inthere, I thought I'd start a thread here aswell...

Below some samples from the previous days, I'll be sure to keep this thread up-to-date as things progress.....

Didn't think I"d be able to doodle much today since I had to do a pinup for a possible comic gig, but alas, here's another doodle!

    Rhemrev's Daily Sketchbook

Those interested in the comic pinup, can check it out here:

Not my best work ever, kinda rushed through it cuz of the deadline.....

I got inspired by watching Sammy's marker-work, soI thought I'd do some of them aswell.....and man, I think I found my new love! I sketched everthing directly w ith pen, and then rendered it with a grey marker & white pencil. I was especially thrilled with how fast you can actually work out ideas this way...... Thnx Sammy, you da man! I did borrow some of the basics of your concepts, I hope you don't mind....especially looked at the way you rendered your robots & used your tools, watching your stuff is really educational!

    Rhemrev's Daily Sketchbook

    Rhemrev's Daily Sketchbook

I had so much fun, I wanted to try out everything......so it kinda became a mishmash of surroundings, robots and vehicles, next time I'll concentrate on just one thing...

    Till next time,

    -Edwin

I'm flattered that I was of some inspiration : )

I think you've found your calling, especially with your environments! you really gotta do some final environ-markers!

try sketching out some ideas with a light marker first and develop some cool shapes, and then go in with the inking... I call this 'blocking' to LOOSELY sketch and idea.

    I wanna c more!

Hey Sammy, thnx fr dropping by! Right before leaving the house today I checked my mail and read your comments, so I was able to do some markersketching as you suggested (I had 1 and a half hour on the trainride to kill), this is what came out....and I must say, this 'reverse' way of working with markers does make for some interesting results. Somehow the drawing ends up better this way, then when starting out with pen and going in with marker later on.

    Rhemrev's Daily Sketchbook

In that last visual I tried to do a shot from within a chopper, looking down on a city, but I screwed it up....same with the big shadows in the 2nd pic......*sigh*

I'll drop some more experimental marker stuff here real soon...

    Thnx again,

    -Edwin

i like the underwater pics, great action. Those ships could be for space or for underwater exploration. I've been using my markers a bit more also, outside of class work. Their speed and versatility is immeasurable.

One suggestion though, you might try adding a few more layers of dark, or use a darker marker value to up the contrast with the drawings. Right now they all have about the same value, but darkening the shadows would really help pop the characters off the page.

THnx attackcat, good sugestion 'bout using a darker marker aswell....on that last pic I already used a darker tone of grey aswell (for the structure on his armour), and that already looked a bit better.....I'm gonna do so me more experimenting, check out some of the r esults here tonight...

Dang dude, you're really crankin' 'em out! (your environment thumbs are really great)
Now that you found you like markers it's time to get some nice ellipse-templats and french curves (lines are hard on a train I can imagine)... oh, and get a white pencil so you can put in quick highlights (bevels and such)
Try what AttackCat said, a dark shadow or two can really pop the immage out. But the reasons you see so many artists using low-contrast markers are often A: it's very quick B: modelers can see detail a lot eiser and C: Ya only have to keep buying 30%'s and 50%'s :p

And remember with markers less=more, you're filling some of the characters ENTIRELY with marker... and I understand, it's fun, once you start layin' down shadow ya don't wanna stop. Try a sketch where you just go in and marker the major shadows that are cast from armor and whatnot.

Hey sammy, thnx fr dropping by! Yeah, I'm really having fun with my markers, though as you said, sometimes I overdo things, I see that now too...

I only just read your comments, so here are some more designs that have the same mistakes you mentioned earlier...the human designs I don't really like (clothing is hard, I should've used ref.), though the lizard warrior came out looking much better, though I did overdo the marker rendering again..

I'm already using a white pencil, though have not been doing much spectacular with it....

    Rhemrev's Daily Sketchbook

    Rhemrev's Daily Sketchbook

I'm gonna see if I can get my hands on some lighter markers next week, it would indeed be a practical thing for the modelers to see the details..LOL Cranking out concepts is one thing, but since I have never worked with a modeler (let alone anything else game related), it's the practical context I miss, and thus try to find out through posting stuff here at the boards....THNX!

This is of course totally awesome. Any refs used at all? Only thing that clashes is the roof of the clocktower, looks a little distorted.

This is not to say I would know how to fix it. ;-)

Hey Spork, the churchtowerroof is indeed off, it's cuz it's round it's really hard to draw correctly. THnx fr pointing it outt though!

Oh, and I've been doing archictecture stuff long before I even got interested in drawing comics, so this type of stuff I can do from scratch....so no ref, it took me about half an hour I think.

Here's another characterdesign I did today:

Jester: thnx, varying styles, subjects and techniques is what keeps things interesting, and you might even stumble upona technique you have never really tried before, but becomes one of your favorites...like I did with markerart..

Here's another concept (in pencil though).....no big masterplan here, just began drawing the big steps and this is what came out.....got kinda bored with it after half an hour, but still managed to finish it...hooray for me!
