i dont play in your league... lol so my critic is just this... AWASOME!
Wow your renders are really well done!
Your stuff looks better and better from each post. Keep it up.
Even though your last self-portrait is still a WIP, I would suggest to change the background color.
Right now the black works like a completely white canvas, so you see the colors too saturated.
Try to change it to a low contrasted brown or so.
Anyways, I hope I could help.
thanks! yeah still not sure what i'll do with the background but i'll play around
here is the start of a character layout:
I drew this character a while ago as the main character of a big story... I still like the story but I wanted to update him. This is from 2 years ago: http://i1062.photobucket.com/albums/...GideonChar.jpg Boy I hope I've progressed enough in that time :<
Nice stuff you have here! Love the bug guy and the bull thing, your more graphic characters are also looking good. Question: did you use the lasso tool to make the armor on the bull thing piece?
A creative artist works on his next composition because he is not satisfied with his previous one. When he loses a critical attitude toward his own work, he ceases to be an artist. - Dmitri Shostakovich
Hello Ian, you have got a very nice sketchbook here. nice study of self portrait on the bus, really captured the reflection and the light very well. The rendering on the bull thing looks very professional.
Love your style. Haven't checked through the entire thread, will do tomorrow. How does one subscribe to threads? I must check that tomorrow as well. Now it's time to go to bed.
HaHA! Thanks to another member I could subscribe.

Tea: Thanks No, that was all just brushes. I usually over-paint with my brush and then use a hard eraser to cut away and leave it looking clean.
Hyunjae: thanks much!
Polly: It's up there in the thread tools, and you can go under Quick Links at the top to get to your threads. thank you a bunch! Hopefully will have lots of updates for you in the future
Made a few changes to that last thing:
I agree with Ludic, it looks like you´re focusing more on hue and saturation, but if you really want the forms to read, value is the most important. ( Like you did on the bull thing!)
Also, on the self portrait, the eyes doesn´t line up in perspective with the center line, maybe some planar studies? The screen left eye is bigger and seems to be a bit big, and i think the nose ridge should cover more of the screen right eye.
Keep it up, man!
Ludic, Flaskpost, many thanks for the crits, I'll take them into account
necroidus that was made just in photoshop using 'timeline". was pretty fun!
Just wanted to post to let you all know that I'm going away for Christmas and there won't be any new posts for a few weeks but hopefully when I get back i'll have some sketches to show
Back from Christmas break
One hour sketch:
WIP, crit would be lovely :
I'll have some more once I have a chance to scan my sketchbooks
Hey, great stuff. I love how solid your mech-ish work looks, and that self-portrait has some really nice colours.
Crit on that last WIP - the left shoulder and right arm are off; the shoulder's too far out from her body and the arm is just bent at a really uncomfortable angle. Quick drawover:
That demon robot you did was fucking badass! Oh, and I also liked that woman in the claw armor.

Thanks the 3dish look just took a lot of passes and layers... I've been considering making tutorial videos, maybe I'll do one on that.. though I don't feel professional enough to be making videos, lol
Here's the previous fellow updated The vest is part of his armor, he wears other layers on top which I'll design later. But the vest is the only part that looks ok for him to wear casually
