Yo OB: i totally apologize. You need to repost your sketch. i was toying around with the idea of adding a STICKY to this and then goofed it up by locking it while going through the admin ops. oops.

    * everyone look for a new "step by step, show us how you did it" thread to appear after i head down to atomix and grab my coffee.
**remember that today is the day to put the extra ummff! in your ports to honor Mr. Andrew Jones.

koryh: welcome! this is a rockin first sp! i really like all the brush strokes. it has that oils feel with the toned canvas showing through. very nice.

mcotie: its about time! i was wondering when you were going to start doing sps. heh, very nice expression.

herm: very nice! i like the colors a lot. nice brush strokes as well. the cool background really pushes your warm sp out.

keyth: nice step by steps! i have a couple on my webpage as well under tutorials...

mia: you are continuing to improve! very nicely done. i would like to see a little more done with the hair though.

jester: you are always improving too. i think maybe your mouth might be a little small. also, watch the perspective on your glasses and nose.

i am still behind ;____;. i was way too tired last night to do one, so here is my halloween one!

Well, everything seems to go sloppy for me this time of year

Anyway... thank you all. Without you I wouldn't have get into drawing/painting/art... I guess you know better what I was missing. Your feedback and the way you've helped me makes this place special. Special thx go to Andrew and Jason and Coro and Foster and all the BIG boys. You make conceptart.org rock! :chug:

    My first SP

What a great thread. Great work everybody !!!
Here's my first SP. It looks better than I expected, but still not good. Seems to be a little bit distorted...
However, it was done in pencil, the white stuff was added in painter ( seems as if my white charcoal was lost while moving to a new flat.... =).

Here is my tribute to Andrew, i really tried to have life and story in todays portrait, and i'm pretty happy with it, the ressemblance is there, and there is a little something else, i guess ... tell me what you think

    1/11/02
    November 2002 Guest SP

wow hermchen, great one, i love the colors and the overall rendering

Hexal, welcome here. If you draw every day you will improve like Oblio did. For now i think you should pay more attention to what you see instead of what you think you are seeing ... forget everything you think you know about mouth, eyes, hairs, even forget these words. When you are looking at your reflection in the mirror dont think its a face, dont think its you, just think it is forms, shapes, volumes, and try to reproduce them the more accurately possible, if you see something as a perfect circle (like the pupil) draw it as a perfect circle (thats not the case in your portrait).
Dont try to rush the process, you dont have to have a finished drawing in 5 minutes, you will be able to do that later in your life. just draw slowly, try to view the lines and curves and draw them carefully, if possible in the minimal number of strokes needed, instead of tons of little scribblings. Do that again and again until you can look at both your drawing and the mirror and you see no more mistakes in the shapes and proportions.
post more and more, we will witness your progress

    Elliot i love that

Oblio, hello, i'm quite new on this forum, so i dont have seen every of your progress and every pictures you have posted, but i must say that like everyone else i am really impressed by your will to learn and your actual success in this task.
Maybe you already did that, but i would like to see a "clean" line drawing from you, instead of all the scribblings. I'm not saying that scribbling is bad, but in art school we only did line drawings (pure black and white) for at least 3 monthes, no values, no color. In fact until a drawing wasnt perfect in shapes and proportions the teachers had us draw it again. The explanation behind that was that the teachers wanted us to learn how to look at things, to see the small variations in the direction of the lines, to be able to eyeball proportions and directions of lines. And we didnt do any values exercices for 2 monthes because they said to us that when we add values to a picture we tend to "correct" a bad drawing with the values, and they wanted us to have a perfect drawing before adding the values in order to havd a perfect final piece (its a bit utopic to use the word "perfect" but you get the point ...)
So I think you whould try to draw more simple, clean line self portraits, trying to find more and more easily the RIGHT line, instead of asking us to find it among several others .... (I'm saying that but i'm stille struggling with that point myself, but i think its the right direction)
I really like your artworks, i hope i'm not sounding harsh or anything.

@Mime - Thanks for the feedback, It didn't take me 5 mins to do though, it took a little while actually.I willtry to slow down even more to find thoses lines and try to really get the proportion right. I'll post one on sinday when i get back from my dads house.

@everyone else, they look Great so far.
    I really like yours Daarken.

Also i poted a concept for a samuria in the WIP section. It's been there for a couple days, 54 view and no replies

Andrew Jones...what can i say? i've never really painted before i came across your thread. i literally owe you a great deal. look at what you have created in all these people. i've learned a lot by doing a SP a day: color, technique, Painter, and a little bit about myself as well(sooo far to go of course). at risk of sounding cheesy, without you i don't know if i would have started something like this.
    i am truly thankful!

OB: once again, sorry about earlier. it was a freak accident. don't beat me :p . we go back a long way you and i.

    thank you

Thank you Keyth, thank you Oblio and thank you to everyone who has joined me in this journey.

i was a little nervous at first.. tributes seem like the thing you do after someone dies. and I am very much alive .i do not need nor do I deserve any tribute.
I am not the paintings I am not the painter. I am only the paint. pay your tribue to the higher artist at work, and pay tribute to yourself.

I want everyone of you to realize what you are doing and how important it is.
you are all artists!, making art for yourself and the sake of art. it dosent come any purer than this. and it is something that is easily taken for granted

I have sacfificed so much for the love of my art. but for one of the first times I can now see how my sacfifices have not been made in vain . every one of your portraits is like a gift to me. thank you all for giving back so much to me in return. I cant explain what is like to see an Artist like oblio come so far in his art so fast and feeling like I had something to do with it. it is a beautifull warm feeling and I can never explain how special that feels. thank you oblio for the dedication of this day.

so my brothers, my sisters, my artists
    join me
together let the spirit of art guide us in this journey
into ourselves, into our art, and into our souls.
    our posibilities are endless.

    Sincerely

    Andrew Peter Jones

Well I feel like a total newbie... first post, just registered, but I've been lurking and watching the self portrait threads for months now. Great work, everyone! This stuff is what inspired me to get back into art...

Anyway, here's mine... I even added color. Now that's rare for me. hehehe.

    greenlightS!!

Ok, I did this oct 30th, but didnt get a chance to print it till today, and since it was for a large formate digital printing class, I consider printing it to have been "completing" it. this is 30 by 20 inches. I don't normally look this mean, honest.!

Took about 6 hours with my little graphire 2 and ps 7, I only spent that long because I'm using self portriats as a "self motivated personal project" and am turning them in for grades.

Thank you Mr. Jones, you have saved the art careers of myself and numerous friends of mine by breathing new life and inspiration into us. You are one of my personal heroes. Here's to another 150 spod's!:chug:

here is my contribution for today, it is a section of a larger piece, but i've got a big game tomorrow and have to get to bed. maybe someone can help me with this little problem, i'm not really liking the feel of my paintings, i need a more painterly feel to them, should i use more hard edged burshes rather than the soft ones?

    Here's my contribution.
Phew, I almost forgot that today was the day! This was made somewhat under duress. You see I have no mirror besides the one in my bathroom. So i ran around the apt. looking for something reflective enough to use. And finally settled on a cd so it was kind of tough. With a small blurry reflection.
