I always lose the feel of the sketch once I start trying to finish it... I may have to redo it again.

A quick rework of the figure I've been struggling with. Seems a little better at this stage, but we'll see if I can maintain that as I progress.

Trying to put those face studies into something useful...

Another face with invented lighting and expression:

And an attempt to incorporate that into the ongoing piece:

I think I need to do some unrelated pieces out of my comfort zone more though, since I feel like I'm still sort of stuck. I'll see about using color tomorrow.

Tried one of those sphere color exercises... I need to work on which value a given color is, basic sphere shading, saturation... I thought about the saturation being lower in the shade but I find myself uncertain now.

    Anyway here it is

I'm just hoping that the stuff I'm picking up for this piece carries over to anything else I attempt... It should, but sometimes I wonder if I'm getting too specific to the current piece.

Site maintenance was happening when I tried to post last night...

Anyway I tried to integrate some of the pose and lighting work from the 7th and work a bit on the lighting on the right side of the foreground.

Still not right but the lighting is more consistent.

Didn't get much done since I had very limited time to work with today.

Tried to work with the hand holding the knife based on the sketches from yesterday. It's a little better, I think... played with the hair as well - it looks better with a less uniform distribution of stray hairs, which I think Janos was trying to tell me a number of posts ago.

A bunch of lighting stuff and another rework of the knife, hand, and arm. Then I flipped it to get a look at all the stuff that I've gotten used to that's wrong.

Hay much improvment in your work already!

Studies are really helping, that last one looking great!

    Keep at it,

    Thanks!

Fixed the more glaring problems revealed by the flip and tried to differentiate the foreground from the background more by upping the contrast.

I realized that I miss the lines in the face on the far right so I put some in. Also did some work on the expression on the next face over and played with the building in the background. I messed around with the idea of changing the pose on the fighting man but I didn't come up with anything I liked.

The kneeling pose was bothering me so I worked on that a bit. I still feel that the arm on the fighting male figure would do more for the composition if it were at an angle but I haven't come up with anything I like yet.

Realized that I'm not a fan of the poses for the two figures on the left. Did some studies to try to figure it out.

More of the same. I know what I want with the upper body but I'm not sure about the position of the legs.
