Team CHOW // Team Red-Meat-Off-The-Bone // hunchback, A-pril, iambanana
So here is team red-meat-off-the-bone's sketchbook for the team CHOW challenge. Here we'll post WIPs, sketches and randoom doodles.
Hopefully we're allowed to discuss the challenge here as well.

I'm sorry I might've rushed the name. Both me and A-pril were pretty keen on this name, and my fingers are itching to get started. So I started.
So, hunchback, A-pril; Let's discuss themes.
A-pril mentioned a viking theme, which I do think would be pretty interesting. Maybe something slightly steampunk-viking-ish? Keep in mind, I'm just brainstorming.
I did start sketching a few pirates today as well. Could that perhaps be something interesting to do?

viking steampunk sounds pretty cool actually lots of different things we could include.
ill do some quick digi sketchs and paints xD.

Thought I'd just flesh out that pirate theme a bit.
This theme really opens for a wide specter of characters. For instance, a sage could be some witch doctor they picked up in the caribbean somewhere. I'm thinking the protector should be this huge black guy they picked up from the coast of africa. Everyone knows the pirates were avid gamblers, so the rabble rouser would be no problemo. Only character I'm having trouble placing in that setting.
What I'm worried about by having viking steampunk is that it might look a bit too much like World of Warcraft.
What are your thoughts?
EDIT: Oh, and the technician could be a nimble chinese girl! Riding some mechanical beast.

.. Pirate steampunk.. would be good, i think.. maybe with an airship or some such machine- instead of a boat?
i really like the idea of the protector being a hardcore black guy they met up with on their travels.. a bit like john coffee in the green mile?
and the sage.. maybe an eccentric einstein like character.. with a monocle .
I'm not quite sure why, but i think the hero should have red/ginger hair.. with a mismatched outfit and roughed up jack sparrow type hat..
.. the shadow?

woah guys pretty interesting ideas.
i guess where more towards a pirate steampunk theme?
Remember, we are designing characters.
That witch doctor idea sounds pretty badass!!
So how are we dividing this stuff up?

The Hero: red head/ ragtag/ hot?
The Shadow:? This guy is the mystery..hmmm. make him akin to the hero somehow?
The Protector:Big guy, african?
The Sage:einstein/witchdoctor? xD witchdoctor with trinkets ie monocle
The Technician: nimble chinese girl/mech/steam beast
The Rabble Rouser:A gentleman! Very French! with le gros moustache! Vive le raiders ouf duuooom!
Intergrate steam tech in to weaponry, gear, peglegs.

Pirate Steampunk would be friggin awesome! And I really dig the idea of a zeppelin.
I've already made a sketch of the technician, I'll post it when I get home from work.
I agree with hunchback on the character suggestions. We should try to incorporate gambling with the rabble rouser character. Maybe have him hold some cards or something.
Perhaps the shadow could be some tall mysterious guy with a big hat, his costume infused with feathers standing out to every side? Sort of like a raven. Personally I find ravens to be pretty shadow-y.
Remember, the brief says that the sage is very calm and rarely says anything. Therefore we should be careful not to go crazy with the wild gray hair and make him a bit solemn-looking.
Just my two cents.
This is getting pretty Final Fantasy-ish. I love it.
EDIT: Regarding task-assigning:
I think the first job for everyone is to find refs and inspiration and then knocking out tons of thumbnails/sketches. Then we'll see what we like best and use it to make a finished piece. Meanwhile, maybe we should admit our greatest strengths and weaknesses? Personally I dont feel I excel particularily in one factor. Im pretty all-round.
On second thought, my suggestion for the shadow might not be such a good idea. I tried sketching it out, and it looked just like a pimp.

Great stuff hunchback. That's the hero right? I was thinking along similar lines. She should be easy to identify with, and therefore not have any major quirks.
Made a quick sketch of the technician, here pictured with her SittingBot 3000.
I think she should look more technician-like than this though. Right now the only thing on her person that hints at her profession is the welding goggles. Any other suggestions for what we can put on her?
Also, I got to thinking about backgrounds. We should definetely try to keep our characters on more or less the same background. Here I tried to quickly sketch the rim of a boat in the back. Only except water, there would be blue skies. What do you guys think?

woah cool stuff xD
i like the idea of the machine but im not sure of the background.
you want to make her the focal point. right now it feels like shes been placed there.
Keep this as a reference and do another one with a bunch of shapes and gesturial lines?
In terms of the character, should she be more dirty/ in to her work.
Sorry i keep thinking of firefly....
hmmm Ill do some speedies of the protector and shadow i guess. See what i can come up with. Got to make it more steam punked! xD
April 5th, 2009 #13
Yep I'll make her more dirty.
Hmmm. What exactly are you not digging about the background? I think it makes stuff looks fresh and windy (Although I agree this is not how steampunk is usually viewed). What if I crop the picture so that it just emcompasses her?
What other backgrounds would you suggest?
April 5th, 2009 #14
What if I do something like this? Rotating the image a bit also gives it a more dynamic feel, and we are after all on a moving aircraft. If I also add some depth blur, don't you think she would be pretty much in focus? I do see a problem with her head not fitting with the rule of thirds.
April 5th, 2009 #15
ahh the background.
well to be honest i think we need to focus on the characters. maybe even no background.Once we get some solid final characters we can consider it.
Ill get some pencils done so i can explain better i guess. I like the design ideas but maybe make a couple of different versions and keep adding and taking away things. You might find youll like one better.
refs ive been looking at a lot of keith thompsons art work. he does some wicked machinery artwork and he has a steampunk robot character that looks awesome.
April 5th, 2009 #16
Alright, we can discuss the background when we get there. But I think it's worth noting that just about every CHOW entry has some sort of background.
Onto something completely different.
Made a few thumbnails. Lost my inspiration towards the end. These are thumbs for the rabble rouser, protector and sage. I do like #2 and #5 though, and also the idea of a steam-powered wheelchair for the sage.
April 5th, 2009 #17
very nice stuff so far, like the technician sketches .. but I do think she should be a little more dirty.. and maybe in some oddly acrobatic pose trying to reach a cog..?
and here's some very quick sketches based on the characters of the sage and the hero... not the best, but my art teacher tells me never to throw thing away.. so here you go!
I quite liked the idea of a child sage.. what are your thoughts on it?
also i'm thinking we should set some kind of timeline..
and how we're actually going to do this..
are we going to divide up the characters if we all make initial concepts of every one.. or are we each going to do each one to completion and then look over them all and decide?
April 5th, 2009 #18
Well, most of the other teams are simply dividing the characters between themselves, meaning two characters per person. Maybe that's the way to go? If so, I'd like to have the technician and the rabble rouser, if that's fine by you guys.
A child sage is def a good idea, but one of the other teams is already doing it. May come off as slightly copy-cat-ish?
A-pril, I like what you have for the hero so far, but could you incorporate more steampunk elements?
April 6th, 2009 #19
.. my sketches are lacking in steampunk elements.. so i'll work that into them a bit more.
.. well the child sage might not work then.. but what do you think of a sort masai sage? ..
if we're going to go down the dividing route then i'd like the a combination of 2 of these - hero/sage/shadow..
but i'm very flexible.. so no worries.
