    Drawings and sketches.

A few requests if checking this place out:
    -Looks at first few posts
-Jump to last page for new stuff (to be able to compare) :p
-And please, PLEASE feel free to TOTALLY kill my work, find everything that's wrong with it. I can take the criticism. They'll help me more in the long run. So feel honest when critting my work.

Well aftr this meeting with the Singapore SB group, i've decided to become more active in here. Anyways this is my new SB. My goal: post 2 pages of my SB a day. They can be really crappy things, or more developed drawings...
I'll start with the older things I have...
Both are from a NAFA evening class, one is a bust, the other one is a real person. +/- 3h30 on each. Comments appreciated

Hi nice start, lets hope you keep up with your goal :-)

    Nice renderings here.

Couple of crits, when using shading lines - try to shade in the direction of the contours of the muscle/skin, rather than in a uniform direction. Also try to use cross hatching to get thicker tones rather than simply pressing harder with the pencil, though of course use pressure too :-)

Small crit on the real person's face, I think the head/hair doesn't go back far enough at the back.

For the Bust, well I don't know what it looked like. I do think for a composition though there are too many midtones, and not enough dark tones. Especially around the eyes, nose, mouth.

When drawing a picture, don't simply copy what you see, think about how you want people to look at your drawings, where do you want there attention to be directed? Refine these areas more, eyes for example, worry less about places further from the focal point.

Anyway, nice start keep it up

    To AlexTooth: Thanks for comments.
I've always had a problem with shading, and never understood why my shading looked so weird. Thanks for helping me out. I'll work on it.
About the real person I didn't manage to draw him with the hair, so I got home and did the hair on my own without any reference. My hairstyles always look unreal :s.
The bust was really weird. It was a fat man without a neck. Was quite though.
I get your point about focal point, and you're right. I'll try to keep that in mind, tho for observation drawings if prefer to draw what I see, nothing more nothing less.

    Anyways, here are today's:
The hands drawing hands is NOT inspired by the Escher thing.

Ahaha well from now on there'll be some change. Back to the quick sketches done in a few minutes each...
    Mostly random.

    Todays:
-the alien portrait came out of a TOTALLY random scribble. I'll do another one like it with process. It's really fun. You randomly draw lines on a paper, give yourself a theme and have got to do something with it.
-The second one is just observation about 10mins each.

@ Brun: thanks man. I'll try, but as most people have told me: I'm afraid of the dark ><. I'll force myself with some exercises

    Todays:
    -Some bridgeman studies.
    - A warhammer 40k piece based on real pic. Took me a lot of time. Main default: there's too much detail :s

Good work so far, keep up all your basic studies, anatomy and such.
And, don't be afraid of pushing your values, once you see the results, you will wonder how you ever got by with out them Maybe try rendering a few basic solid shapes - cubes and such to kick start you off Do take note of what Alex said in his reply, it really is good advice

Hope to see more from you soon

@ Karein: hmmm for anatomy i just can't manage to find a good way to start. I don't see the point of copying Bridgeman's (even if I did it lol). I've heard about Loomis and such, but I can't stay in front of my pc and draw, that's just not possible for me. I was thinking of getting the itouch posemaniacs application. Usefull? (http://www.posemaniacs.com/). Anyways I'll get some cubes and spheres on paper. Long time I haven't done any of them. How do you actually define "rendering"? never really got the word >< (Yes there's lots of vocab I do not understand here, so might as well ask :p)

    Todays:
I've got a little problem, bought a weird sized sketchbook: bigger than A4, smaller than A3... something like B4 or C4 I guess. Anyways, my scanner only supports A4 so these scans are incomplete.
I was wondering if anyone could give me a tip for scanner. I'd need one that can scan up to A3 size preferably, not to expensive: about 300S$ (Singapore dollar) =150 euros.
First one is a concept I have, some sort of intergalactic gateway. Still in process, I'll finish it whenever I can.
Second one is observational: a sheep 10 year old sheep skull (found it on a trip to New Zealand!), a hammer and a pincer or whatever its called. Hammer and pincer arent fully on it. All are done with time limit:
1h on skull, and 10 min on hammer and pincer each.
Annoying thing with time limit is that I don't have lots of time to polish the thing

Great work so far, keep these studies comin.
I really like that cloth study. My only crit would be to try and up the contrast of your drawings, i.e use softer pencils to really make the detail pop. At the moment they all look a bit washed out, although this could just be your scanner.

Sorry i don't have a clue about scanners, I just photograph my sketches outside, and they seem to come out ok.

@Jacky-Boy: thanks mate, the cloth was my first try at any cloth, was quite happy with it. Dang i know i've got value problems... What are softer pencils again? 2b, 4b or it is the other way? 2f,4f and so on. Confused lol.
They are indeed a bit washed out because of scans :s and my camera is fucked up ah ah

    OKay today's and friday's:
(I was unavailable yesterday, had things to do^^).
First two are faces from magazines: shows process basically, the one with toning is 1h the other one 30min.
Other two are OIC portrait day stuff (monthly event in singapore). Not great but they are 20min each tho.
Main problem is still a lack of value ><! @$%^ grumbllll. I only use HB so far, i'll try to use more as well.

    Okay today's is lame:
only one, and not at all finished had lots of homework to do, lost h having lunch, slept, played pc, and now off to see someone. Ugh. I didnt bother posting the woman in process (not the one smiling) as it is almost done.
This one is just an eye. I'm having a hard time with eyebrows
After this I'll go back to classical cubes, cones and sphere for a week or so. need to manage shades and values better.

Had a maths test, a night out and a night a gf's house taking all me drawing time away. But I'm gonna catch up real fast this w-e.

Here what I should've posted two days ago and yesterday (thus I'll post another four tomorrow):
Cubes spheres and all those things. Quite fun after a while :p

Still am a day late argghhh.
I've found a way to end up with better images. Now they wont look blurry anymore.

    Here's yesterday's:
My own rubik's cube (which I complete in about 1m30s ^^), colored with simple pencils.
    Some additional geometry studies.

As some might've realized, I've got trouble keeping up with the 2 pages a day. It's only a guideline I try to follow but I have many other projects on the run (sculptures, drawings on A2 ect). This is even more true at the moment, so if I can't keep up with the 2 pages/day, I'll probably catch up later on

Anyways some great news for me: I've been accepted into Digipen Singapore! (I can't believe it!)

    Here's todays:
I've put together some shapes and made a house on the second. I'll post the finish of that one. I'll switch to some bridgeman and perspective things now.

Well well well, seems like i'm running even MORE late with my pages ah ah.
my w-e: making a sculpture (took most of my Saturday), then some digital things on sunday. Didn't touch any paper in two days! :p
Anyways, there's gonna be a change of plans soon, as I've been accepted into Digipen, they've already given me an assignment, and they are asking for lots of drawings, so I'll just post these. They'll be from the Drawing on the right side of the brain series, then from observation.

My digital stuff: simple but the heart thing took me hours!!

    Today's:
a Weapon design, i tried to colour it with paint, bit it didn't work as planned. I didn't have the right pencils anyways... Hope you like it, I'm thinking of doing more. Then a failed attempt at bridgman... switched to weapon sketches quite fast. Finally a creature design blasted by some powerful ray i'm hoping to finish it soon

Finished the dragon today... am thinking about adding a background as well but it already took me quite some time to finish off this one.

I'll do some weapons and maybe back to some observational things.

Anyways, today... NOTHING! hehe I'm leaving a week for some holidays (going to Peking), thus I didn't have much time to draw :s (had to make my bag and some other stuff....).

Anyways I'll post ALL I'll have produced when I get back, which means AT LEAST 10 pages of work. I guess I'll switch back to observational, with some weapons along the way and eventually some other fantasy things

    I'll see you folks in a week^^
