Digging the latest life studies. Sometimes for painting light onto an object, I will create a new layer and set it to screen or overlay mode and paint the light in. Help to figure out how colour light will affect an existing local colour of an object.

I still yet to see the latest DSi XL (LL in Japan) which have bigger screen size than the DS Lite that I currently have. The screen size for the DS Lite is rather small for detail painting so I often scribble major shapes. Overall it can always double as a portable gaming console for me. :p

    thanks guys ;]

woke up with an itch to do some retarded, overly saturated space-creatures and what not. threw out a few of them in last couple hours or so. mostly tried to keep them overly loose and playfully colored- something you might see in the casual game sector.

first guy is a bacteria spreader. second guy is a play on fire ants with a heart that functions more like a combustion engine, his legs serving as pistons.

third image 01 - snow dwelling large cat type beast. his markings resemble a useless, doofy herbivore with bad eyesight-- who happen to be his primary prey as well.
third image 02 - this guy is more humanoid. he nestles under foliage and leaves with only his stumps sticking out. when careless space marines plop down to tie their boots or whatever, he pops up and sends them flying.
third image 03 - stalking beater guy.
third image 04 - when threatened, this guy plops down and tucks his arms and head in as far as possible, leaving mainly his nerve-damaging-mucus covered spikes out.

last image is a creepy update to the tree imp.

Thx for dropping by my sb. Nice sketchbook sourgasm
The digital paintings from life are really inspiring, I've definitely got to try it out. Your illustrations are lively and they have nice compositions. Something my paintings from imagination lack. I guess I just don't work on them long enough. Gotta go pump out some finished pieces.

    thanks, guys ;]

update on the plague bug. i'm not happy with his egg sacks, since i imagined them to host hordes of smaller bugs. i'll probably redo those entirely. without being too phallocentric, i tried to model him after human reproductive organs, since his point is to inseminate mankind with disease.

    edit: slightly revised version ;p

I love the feel of the work in post 211, and much liking your woodland imp (initial sketch has more impact for me then the progress-color ones.. maybe he needs more color, or the backgrounds in the color version "eats" the impact of his interesting shape, which reads well, black on white in the sketch). Creature 04 from the last creature batch also has most personality of the bunch (imo) .

Some more color accents in your color work would be nice to see ( except the overly satturated critters, those have plenty of color ).

    Keep rocking .

Will appreciate critique anywhere, anytime .

thanks for the detailed input ;]

good point about the final on the wood imp getting toned down by the background. same with color accents. i didn't really think of it, but going through and popping each of them with some complimentary colors would make a world of difference. thanks!

pretty much final on this guy. i tried to keep his face kind of ambivalent, since he doesn't exactly mean to wipe out planets with his horrible disease. figured out a lot of stuff along the way. mostly, had an epiphany about handling edges. can't wait to work it into the next one.

your imp turned out really nice with your pink creature give the blisters on its back a different texture then the rest of the skin since as of now it shares the same texture with the skin and it seems a wee bit boring. Great update though!

Hey Josh, I really like number 3,4,5 & 10. I like that they have dissymmetry going. Great job on the life studies on the previous page - hope to join you soon - I'll be lugging some serious gear as well ha!

huey - i went forward before checking responses. didn't end up choosing either of those two, as they make more sense than im trying to make. going for absurd ;]

mirskov - sweeeet. when do officially set foot in the ol' gay bay?

took a few of them forward a bit. trying a new approach where i work up the values and the designs at the same time- but only in the mid to low-mid of the value range that i intend to use in the final. this way i can get the general design and value relations working at once concurrently and then i still have my darkest darks saved up for pushing shadows/form-turns and my top range for drawing attention with direct light. loads of fun.

i've had a falling out with the last guy already. didn't even give him a pet name. what a douche.

great updates man! the cast drawing is brilliant and your digi painting skills are have definitely improved perhaps soften some of those edges? the digi studies are a good idea/habit, keep at it man!

EDIT: okay so i totally missed a page turns out you did soften edges on the tree imp haha...I like cockchops and steam teeth (the better two both design wise and pose/gesture wise)

    thanks!

those guys are my favorites too. here's an update on them. i like this method of working, but it's definitely too slow. i'd rather have my design nailed before any grayscale gets going.

    anyway. hope you like 'em.

cool characters the clothing/armor seems a little impracticable loosen them up a bit, like the guy on the left has a really stiff arm (try making a 100% straight arm) -- its a little painful..

    anyway good stuff nice valuezzzzz

Looking good. Try play around with with cloth folding unless you want it to be rather tight. :o

I feel the composition is a bit tight (especially the lady at the bottom as she is quite near to the edge).

Also you can play around with one of the tree branches (on the left part of the image) to point to her to lead the eye from the top to the botom. Other than that love the design of the spider.

Hello there! Are you going to use some ref for the last piece? You could always team up with a buddy to take a few shots just to get the pose/anatomy right.

Really awesome work lately, you are really improving!

    Crit for the on-going piece:
First of i'll just say that im not that sharp on composition, but isn't the diagonal branch kind of separating the composition in two?

huey - i tried to use the shadow shapes in the value study to point to her- are they not getting the job done? if not, i may be able to angle a branch back at her a bit. don't want to mess up the shape she is contained within either, though.

xin - oh yeah, definitely. we'll probably set up a class period where we just take ref photos. no worries!

braintree - yep, that part was intentional. i've separated the three story elements from each other in varying degrees of subtly. hopefully by the time i'm done (color important for final read) it won't be too polarizing ;] thanks!

i'm gathering stuff up for the launch of my new portfolio, so i've been going through and systematically hyper-finishing some of my older work. here is a finished george harrison from the Easy Rider redesign project we did with the MB guys and an in-progress redesign for the sheriff. hope you digs.

they look similar because george pretty much was one of them in the movie. southern lawyer vs southern cop

Wow dude, the last value character is awesome ! Maybe you should try to blend a bit more the values where the edges are soft ! Keep it up !

good call. i kept that in mind moving into color and hopefully rectified the issue to some degree. i think its still plaguing a few parts of the painting, though.

    thanks!

Woops I didn't notice the shadow that leads to the lady in the tonal value study. Must have been too subtle for me to saw it. XD

The new character is looking nice. Nothing much to crit so keep it up!
