    Icon IDW #96: Alien Tripod

    IDW #96: Alien Tripod

    Topic: Alien Tripod

Background: Even if you've never seen the movies or read the book, doubtlessly you have heard about War of the Worlds at some point in your life. And with that name, the mentioning of alien tripods invading earth and destroying everything on their path. In short: classic sci-fi stuff.

This topic is simple: design an Alien Tripod. It doesn't necessarily have to be from War of the Worlds, it can be any alien tripod. It doesn't even have to be an evil one, it can also be our first contact with a friendly alien species if you want, as long as it walks around on just three legs

    Brief:
    1. Design and draw an Alien Tripod.
    2. That's it... now draw!

    Deadline: Tuesday, March 24

Worth a go... will edit when I have my first WIP. Methinks I'll go for the peaceful, if snobbish, types...

There we go... I'm gonna go for a kind of Howdah type vehicle, so those Alien Imperialist Snobby Types can look down on the British Imperialist Snobby Types they're going to be walking around in the final... hehehe...

Hey PMaz, really liking the uniqueness of the design, but when I try to picture how it'll walk in my head.. it looks a little clumsy.. so you might want to work that out a bit. other than that, it's looking pretty cool man.

Wow! Seeing a heckuva lot of good entries already (I feel ashamed of my poor first sketchy sketch)...

Deon - That is a sweet little machine, nicely thought out... but just one question: what's its purpose, transport, cargo, weapon? Call me nosy, but I like to know these things...

Hexism - *chuckles* Love it... Always like a good sense of humour, even in tripod machines of infinite death!

    Well, good luck everyone!

Thanks for the crit Zeo-X. ;P I guess it does look clumsy. I was going for something totally mecanical with a very uneasy and broken walk cycle. I wanted to try to create something "alien" in the way it moves rather than on the finish. I guess it wasn't that sucessfull if it looks clumsy but I don't think I'll have time to rework it... Adding some marker renderings might be as far as it's ever gonna get. ;P

    Btw Really like Hexism design.

Hey Deon, really like the alien organic look on yours.

    --

A sketch I did last night.. there's something very wrong with the way it's standing right now.. been trying to fix it all night and it's driving me nuts..it'll be awesome if someone here has any idea where to place the legs... anyway, will be colouring it soon.

Here's the final. Going to upload in the final.
    IDW #96: Alien Tripod

ZEO-XHave you tried pushing the front right leg slighly backward so the two front leg seem closer together in order for the viewer to see them as a pair? I'm not sure it's the direction to go but it might help.

I hope you don't mind if I did some paintover/perspective thingies to help. I used the closest leg as the reference as to how you wanted the other one to look. Neat design. Semi organic as well.

For the first one I looked at where the joints should go and painted over, but something still looked a bit off.

Beware that he following could just be me being an art hypochondriac. (If that's possible) Maybe someone who actually knows what they're doing could have a peek. (I'd like to learn if I'm doing this right or not too) As I said it still looked off to me, so I decided to look where the shoulder joints would end up, and I found that the opposite shoulder would end up going slightly to the opposite side of the closest leg.

Red is joint points/Body parts. Green is a centre line. Purple shows the centre. Blue is work lines.

This one shows where I think the shoulder would be.

    Name: paintover 2.jpg
Views: 1140
Size: 87.3 KB

This one is where the far leg would be. I did overdo it a little.

    Name: paintover 3.jpg

Size: 91.6 KB

If I did get it right, the hind leg would have issues too, but I don't want to tell you it's actually wrong if it's just me. Another point is that you might want the wing like parts to be shown for both sides.

    Hope this helps.

Pixie Trick- Thanks alot for the help really appreciate it.

A wip of colouring. Right now I'm colouring it on separate layers so it'll be hard to make changes on the leg. Once I'm done I'll probably flatten the layers and move the legs around according to your critique. Once again, thanks alot It's a big help.

I'm going for the humorous. Wip, lots of work needed. Probably will have someone screaming in a window and toys etc. on the lawn. Grass advice is welcome.

Nice idea Pixie! Looking really funny.. about the grass, it'll be better if you look at it as big tonal shapes. and only indicate a few stalks of grass here and there and that'll work better.

Still working away at mine. There is a lot more planned, if I can find the time.

    zeo-x: Nice colour job.

zimfin: Looking nice as well. Your lighting is a bit inconsistent. You have shadows falling to the right under the legs, but the lighting looks to be from the back or sides from the shading on parts of the legs.

I've done some more. Still lots to do. Pink is a really hard colour to work with. I think there's going to be a sprinkler in left corner area too. Colour suggestions for the shorts? There's too much green so they wouldn't stick out enough, but I'm not sure what to go with.

Pixie: Thanks. I have tried working on lighting issues already, since my last post. I think it is ready for the finals thread but any last minute advice for corrections would be appreciated. Thanks folks.

Heya. This is my very first IDW. Rough sketchy here. It's supposed to be an alien city... on legs. I've been looking at it for too long, so I can't tell if anything looks off. Some comments would be much appreciated. thanks.

Another wip. Tree is ugly, but I'm not too sure what to do with it. I don't want it to stick out too much. Grass and shadows need to be done, and some shorts and arm tweaking, little details and that's all I'll have time to do.

It's really nice to see some entries up early by 24 hours. I feel slow.

    xgabo: very nice.

    franna: really neat idea.
