I am just curious, what are some of your favorite graphic novels?
I really enjoyed Y: The Last Man, possibly one of the greatest series I have ever read.
Den by Richard Corben and his all his other works, Batman Year One, AKIRA (original black and white), Blueberry (western) and everything by Moebius. I don't read a lot but those I absolutely love specially Blueberry, it's like reading a Leone's western, it will grab you like nothing else.
*cough any Allen Moore cough* The Dark Knight Returns, The Killing Joke, Mouse,
Maus, Strangers in Paradise, Preacher...
Black hole by Charles Burns.
Ghost World by Daniel Clowes
Blankets by Craig Thompson
The Sandman: Dream Hunters -Neil Gaiman (Illustrated by Yoshitako Amano)
I don't know if it counts by I have the whole collection of Little Nemo by Winsor McCay. It's not really a graphic novel, but man is it beautiful.
Batman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore with art by Brian Bolland.
I have the softback, but bought the hardback just yesterday. Why? Like, why not?
Kingdom Come by Mark Waid and Alex Ross
Robots vs. Zombies by Ashley Wood
Just getting the Starman Omnibus ( a six hardback collection with the entire series) by James Robinson and Tony Harris
And for a continuing series : Ex Machina by Brian K. Vaughn and Tony Harris ( a brilliant mix of superhero and Post 9/11 politics)
Wanted, The League of Extraordinary Gentleman, Silent Hill Omnibus, Freakangels, and The Killer are all pretty awesome to me.
My favourite comic book series is the Danish "Valhalla" comics. There have been 14 so far, but the 15th final one will be released this year. So the series are finally coming to an end, the first was released in 1979. I grew up with them, so it's rather bittersweet.
They all revolve about the various stories of the Norse mythology. The drawing style is stylized, but really beautifully done! And it's with some great humour. Its website is here I think they have been released in English (edit: sorry, just checked, they haven't, real pity). Here are all the covers.

Bone- Jeff Smith
Blacksad- Canales/Guarnido (It has been already mentioned earlier, but it's worth insisting: The artwork- and writing- is so good, it's sickening)
Monster- Naoki Urasawa
Persepolis- Marjane Satrapi
Sin City- Frank Miller (Especially The Big Fat Kill and Family Values)
Gunnm (Battle Angel Alita)- Yukito Kishiro (The first 4 volumes are fabulous. Unfortunately, the story gets rushed in the last 3 volumes)
I gotta say, Gipi's "Notes for a War Story" is amazing. Also,
Exit wounds by Rutu Modan
I Killed Adolf Hitler by Jason
Clumsy by Jeffrey Brown
Deep Sleeper (I forget by whom)
I dunno - there's too many good books out there! But look around the indy section of your comic store, guys - there's some stunning work in there. There's much more then spandex in comic books.
If you liked Y, you'll probably like Runaways and American Virgin.
The Sandman and Watchmen should be on the top of everyone's list.
You might want to troll for artists and writers you like. For instance, Alan Moore is god. Because he wrote Watchmen, I picked up Miracleman and a couple others. I also enjoy Niel Gaiman, so I've picked up a lot of his books.
You liked Y, which is written by this guy, who was one of the writers for Runaways, which is the only other work of his that I've read.
If you like quality writing for free, I also suggest taking a look at nightmare world, which switched to a wierd format, but is still amazing.
Big votes for Terry Moore's Strangers In Paradise. Believable character development and one of the best romances involving a violent lesbian mafia ever. Francine is my hero!
Also second Persepolis and want to add The Maxx if it hasn't been said yet. Nothing like some good childhood trauma and a dysfunctional superhero complex to add some color to your life
As an accompaniment to the suggestions here, Even a Monkey can Draw Manga is AWESOME for people who love or hate manga. Totally tongue-in-cheek and satirical guide to successful Manga formulas throughout the decades. Has a hilarious chapter on hentai for male vs female audiences!
One of the great things about the Watchmen movie being released is the re-release of all the associated Alan Moore bookography. His early work with 2000AD, The Ballad of Halo Jones is probably one of my favourite graphics. It was meant to be longer, but he fell out with Fleetway/2000AD and so it ends at book 3. Oh well. Miller's Elektra: Assassin got a snappy rerelease there recently too - thats gorgeous and better than his (also awesome) Daredevil. I also like Dave Sim's Cerebus series. And Ghost in the Shell... it's hard to beat a bit of Shirow.
Luba in America
Palomar: The Heartbreak Soup Stories
The Adventures of Luther Arkwright
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
Batman: Gotham by Gaslight
JTHM Director's Cut
Tell me dark
those two are probably my favorites
▄▀▄▀▄▀■ - GORILLA ARTFARE - ■▀▄▀▄▀▄
tank girl - jamie hewlett
wormwood: gentleman corpse - ben templesmith
liberty meadows - frank cho
v for vendetta,watchmen - alan moore(writer)
sin city - frank miller
and various spiderman comics i wouldn't be able to place
edit: sekino,damn blacksad looks interesting!

oh my god m@, the corrigan graphic novel is absolutely awesome!!!!
It's damn near unreadable, but the illustrative mischevousness is something every artist has to experience!!!!
Aaaaanway, the standards have been mentioned, Moebius, Alan Moore, Frank Miller, Neil Gaiman, those are defiantely creators that allmost never strike out.
Still, my every list that has to do with comics, well actually, anything ever printed on paper, starts with Asterix. They're the epitome of what comics are about and well, Goscinny and Uderzo are plain geniuses...
so after Asterix, I'd urge everyone to look at the work of Enki Bilal, just look at it, he drew me into buying his novels just by one frame i saw on a poster somewhere! Jodorowsky, Jimenez, also legends, and I shouldn't forget Blacksad, by Disney studios Diaz Canales and Guarnido.
i always liked the hellboy novels. i only wish there were more of them. Also, some of the ultimate xmen graphic novels are pretty good.
"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

I'm gonna ignore the staples (Preacher, Watchmen, Hellboy, etc) as they have already been said over and over and over in every "best comic" thread ever. Here's some other stuff...
Infinity Gauntlet - This my favorite story of all time...it was also my first comic when I was 12 years old:
Annihilation - If you like IG, this series is amazing...and long.
Annihilation: Conquest - the sequel...
Captain America (recent) - I am finding the new Bucky-as-Captain America to be some of the best stuff Marvel has put out in years:
And just so I'm not too image-heavy, these are my other favorites of the moment:
Dark Tower - Long Road Home/Treachery
Guardians of the Galaxy
X-force (new series)
