    Final Fantasy XIII Concept Art

I really, really, really like the style of tetsuya nomura's concept art for final fantasy XIII and also for 8.

    EG: http://www.gamekyo.com/Webmasters/Im...5803_0_big.jpg

    I had 2 questions.

    A) What program do YOU think he used to create the 3d concept art and video clips for final fantasy 13, 10 ect? My bet would be a custom made program, but im interested to know other peoples opinions. Since such information is undisclosed.

    B) Any really good tutorials around for creating realistic 3d character designs for max or maya?

    mmm

I dont know 3d, but to do that i think it takes a lot of years of practice.

You dont gona find any tutorial to make that in 2 days

What i know is that for be a good scupltor you have to know a lot of anatomy.

You can know a lot of 3d max maya and all that stuff, but if you dont know porportion anatomy anatomy you are dead.

There you have a good point to start.

    Sorry for my bad english

Well, i don´t think Square used a custom made 3D programm.
I guess it´s one of the big three one Maya, Max or XSI, with some self made scripts / plugins at least.
In fact it doesn´t matter what application they used, all provide almost the same kind of features you need. When you look to cgtalk.com you recognise that whatever software you use its all about your skills at the end.
So get whatever application you can afford or a comfortable with and start.

And as Bushido already mentioned, Anatomy is the key element of doing character modelling.

As for tutorials, I already wrote about cgtalk.com, which is as far as i know the biggest forum about cg (I guess you will get a answer there what application they used...) and finally google is your friend.

    cheers

    I dunno...
Are you sure Tetsuya Nomura is the one who modelled the character in your link?
I always thought Nomura was only in charge of painting the characters and that it was up to other guys to do the 3D stuff.(?)

Noo... He hasn't since Final Fantasy VI. Since Final Fantasy VII, with an exception of IX, Tetsuya Nomura have been doing concepts for all games.

He still does cover art for the games though...

Amano was the character designer from I to VI. He still designs the title logo and does promotional work and image illustration.

I really wish someone would replace Nomura, 'cause all his designs are starting to look the same. AND with all these sequels, he's just rehashing his own stuff.

p.s. I can't tell if Ashtonw is being sarcastic or not.

Oh good, it wasn't just me who thought everything looked the same. It's like the "paper doll" style effect.

I will correct myself... Yoshitaka Amano and Akihiko Yoshida should be the only two people to touch FF art.

Akihiko Yoshida is godly. I love his art. When he went all chiaroscuro in Vagrant Story, I almost could've kissed the screen. I want more artbooks from him!

Final fantasy franchise, since Spirits Within, have been using Maya for animation and rendering, the look in FF 13 comes directly from Advent Children, And Advent Children comes directly from Spirits Within.

Tetsuya Nomura only designs characters (sometimes, he´s now a game director... and feature as well), but the didn´t do any 3D at all.

    Want some artwork?

The guy have some japanese manners = same face on every character. :p I think he is better at fashion design.

Now the 3D question has been answered i guess we can keep derailing the thread? ;p

I did a bit of searching via google for some NON-3D artwork, and found a few character designs.
At first i thought these were Nomura Fan-arts but apparently no they're the official stuff...

    Some enviros:

But the most interesting find (for me) was at this page
Near the bottom are a few pics from another artist i dunno.
(they gave Shiva a twin sister?)

I like his take on Ifrit:

No credit as i have no idea who these guys are, the last one signs "Chikako"...

no it's not just you. the fantasy has gotten less fantasyish lately. although if you mix it up with chrono corss/trigger and star ocean then there's a world of fun fantasy. I happen to be a square enix nut so, i am very partial. but meh, now if you made a halo/FF/Chrono cross/ blood raine game that would be AWESOME
