Promo mailer:FX Houses? Ad Agencies?...
I was thinking of sending out a postcard just to help people become aware of me as I look for freelance storyboard or concept work. The card has a sample of my art, contact info and casually mentions some of the projects I've worked on.
For optimal response, who should I send my cards to?:
Ad Agencies i.e. Saatchi & Saatchi, Ogilvy Mather, etc.
FX/Animation Houses, i.e. Rhythm & Hues, Digital Domain, etc.
Commercial Production Houses, i.e. A Band Apart, Villains, etc.
I guess my concerns are about how each of these types of companies do business; how responsive to freelancers they are...or if promo materials would even reach intended recipients (in the case of companies that act as agents). Any thoughts or advice?

I've been fortunate to have a good work flow so I've never personally promoted myself. But i know several of my peers who swear by post cards. Cheap easy to mail. Just be relentless keep sending them.
I've worked with most of the companies you've mentioned. Production companies like A band apart or MJZ, you need to get your stuff infront of the producers not the directors. Ad agencies, I think its important to get to the source, the art directors. As far as your questions about freelancing goes. I guess every place is different. Let me just say that alot of my work comes out of L.A. and N.Y. and live in Toronto Canada.
Your stuff looks great btw
All the best

Thats just the kind of info I needed to hear! Thanks for the insight and the nice words on my work. I moved recently (ok, about a year ago) and really didn't do a good job of getting the word out (no wonder it was so slow this year). Anyways, printing is so cheap these days (I use psprint.com) I really don't have an excuse for not doing more mailings. Thanks again, and if anyone else has any other thoughts on the topic they'd like to add, please keep 'em coming.
P.S. Googled your portfolio site...Hey, your work ain't too shabby either...Wow!!
