    Conceptual discussion

Some great ideas come out of slightly changing a vital element of a generally accepted idea, this discussion focuses on the idea of what would happen if people had to sleep ever half an hour.

Like a sneeze or a heart beat, every thirty minutes you will have to sleep, you wake up fine and are not tired how does this change society as we know it.

This was the topic of discussion at lunch today at the studio, we explored ideas that everything about our culture would change and how they would change.

    Points suggested include

    - we would need a very modular society

    - we would be in tightly organized groups of people that are asleep and people that are awake

    - much more scheduling would have to be in place like planning for ever minute you are awake to get a task done.

    - there would be people you could never meet that are slightly out of phase with you because they are asleep when you are awake.

    - the family structure would change if you were in sync with your parents they would always be asleep when you were awake, adoption would be common place, even mandatory.

    - people would be more cooperative in this culture.

    - architecture would change, (secure pods for sleeping in public)

    - all forms of transportation would undergo change,

    - would there still be much crime ?

    - how would schools function, would they even exist the way we know it, rows of people asleep while teachers are organized into the sync of their own students.

This was just a really cool discussion with about 10 people around the lunch table.

so how would the world be if human beings had to sleep every 30 mins day and night.

People would probably be nicer and less grumpy. No sleep-deprivation = less irritability?

It would solve a lot of arguments:

"I can't believe you ate my cookie!"
"You said I could eat it!"
    "I................zzz..."
    "Zzz..."

    Although this would be bad:

"I just figured out that an asteroid is going to slam into the earth in...zzz..."

But exactly how long would you sleep? I guess that's the big question.

If there is a sin against life, it consists perhaps not so much in despairing of life as in hoping for another life and in eluding the implacable grandeur of this life.

Here's my big idea: We would all save so much time if we skipped every other word!

Would everyone be falling asleep and waking up at the same times? And if they aren't, how come? Is there a way to sleep in or stay up a few extra minutes to fall out of sync with everyone else?

Yes!!! I've actually been seriously considering that. I'm gonna try it in a few weeks.

For those who don't know, polyphasic sleep is where you sleep 20 minutes every 4 hours, and that's all the sleep you need. This totals to about 2 hours of sleep for every 24 hours. It works because your body gets into this cycle where as soon as you fall asleep you more or less immediately go into REM sleep, which is all you really need.
