Mac Tire's sketchbook - updated with atelier work!

PLEASE CLICK HERE FOR SHORTLINK TO MOST RECENT POST!

My name is Conor Burke. I started this sketchbook aged 18. I like to think of myself as an artist masquerading as an architecture student...

I'll update this post to display highlights of this sketchbook, something tells me that otherwise people are being turned away by the quality of the images in the following ten or so pages:

mysocksrock: Thanks Chris! Yeah, 60 seems a good figure, but it can get tiring at times sketching furiously!

    mollymillions: I do? weight?... thanks!

    More vile bile...
[Bridgman, characterdesigns.com faces, some of tonights poses]

Off to bed now, looking forward to life drawing tomorrow.

Nice sketches, but I would say you should do the legs just a little tad longer. The other proportions seem very nice though, and I think I see an improvement, you seem to be cleaning up your lines.

    Cheers

I agree with Janos on the legs, and be careful of the size and shape of the rib cage. It is a little off in some drawings.

You did a lot of work, Keep it up!

janos: now that you mention I have been thinking about how I draw legs recently, proportion wise. During my Leaving Certificate (Irish version of the A-Levels) it was pointed out that I tended to draw legs quite long, maybe I have been a bit over zealous in my correction attempts. Thanks! I'll bear that in mind for the next batch.

Aaron Death: hmm... maybe I might have to revisit proportions in general. Thanks Aaron!!

Moving [not so] swiftly onwards heres some of tonights work, namely, life drawing [a sample, poses ranging from 30seconds to 30 minutes in length], some Bridgman eyes and some non-refs, and some imagination stuff [I stink at faces!].

Some poses from this morning; 20, 30 second ones and 40, 60 second ones.
Also the attatchments system does not like me...

I'm in love with your lip, ear and nose studies, and your heads are getting noticeably better over time.

A suggestion for your heads: If you take a look at the brow/cheekbone/nose/chin line in your 3/4 views, it's usually a perfectly smooth curve. This makes the face's dimension feel a bit flat, as if their noses have been squished.

Great work, nonetheless, and I can't wait to see more!

Lovesick Robot: Thanks! Regarding the 3/4 line, I couldnt agree more. From now on I'm going to really start looking at the planes in the face to try and sort this out. Also, I seem to be allergic to noses...!

    threecharles: Thanks for the input!

Not much work over the weekend, too tired from the week (lame excuse, I know). Anywho, got some done today [30, 30sec poses; 30, 60sec poses; and some Loomis mixed in with some non ref {mostly Loomis}].

Right, the attachment system definately hates me...
Some lips, curtosey of Loomis; 60, 60sec poses and the pride of the post...
one 30min environment study (my first ever; avert your eyes!!), more a case of fiddling with a brush in PS while looking at this picture; http://www.terragalleria.com/europe/...fran41808.html

Todays work (60, 60 sec posemaniac poses; one of five 30 sec life poses; several 15min life poses; one 10 min life pose [semi reclining], some loomis + ref faces and some non ref faces + eviro thumbs).

I REALLY have to get working more from imagination. How do you keep the creative juices flowing when you open the ssketchbook?!

Your studies certainly seems to be paying off! Keep doing them!

In regards to working from imagination, I find it useful to work abstract, and then work up to something from that. Random shapes and stuff can push your imagination to create some cool little ideas and poses for example.

Hey Mt thanks for dropping by, you have a really good sense of mass in your sketches, which I only seem to find after about the 6th time redrawing it ha! Your poses are coming along really well, you manage to keep your drawings loose but they still have form which I find at the best of times.

    Take it easy
    Chris

lucretia: Thanks! I'll try abstraction in future!

    mysocksrock: Thanks Chris!

Well though the weekend has been pretty uneventful, I did test myself by doing a couple of non-reffed poses, you can make them out by the clearer lines but messy proportion.

Todays update contains the aforementioned non refs, some 30 second ref poses, some scribbling inspired by the current COW topic and some random crap.

I love the free-ness of your lines in the gestures. Very nice work you have in all of the areas, such great conviction. Keep up the great work!

Sum total of tonights work; 60, 60sec poses (aiming for form + volume this time), and a sketch of a reaper character.

Hey Conor and thanks for stopping by at my SB!

You sure are productive! It's great seeing you do fundamendal studies, it's so important to the get basics down before moving on the advanced stuff. Looks like you're getting a pretty good grasp of it!

I recognize many PostManiacs poses there, definitely a good site, especially to do quick 30sec poses. But I'd still recommend you finding some real fleshy humans of all shapes and ages, the muscle-people over at PM still need that 'live' touch, heh Head over to the Reference and Inspiration sub-forum, plenty of links there for nudes and more. Keep on drawing!

AsaB: Thanks Asa! Although, I really need to get more productive from imagination to make use of these studies. I agree, posemaniacs cant compare with living flesh, and thanks for promting me to start using ref other than that site.

Tonight's work; 15, 45sec posemaniac poses for warmup and some 5min ref studies.

Kristo Novo: No problem! Will do! Thanks!

Managed to get some art in today (uni's pretty hectic lately). Anyway here's some crap poses (30-45 secs each) and two 10min studies.
    Enjoy!
