Regarding the works of Alphonse Mucha

For those of you who are familiar with Alphonse Mucha's work:

Which of his pieces do you think are the most commonly known/easily recognizable to most people across North America? (Preferably not considering his commercial pieces.)

I have to choose a piece of art to base something off of for a school assignment but I have to choose one that's relatively easy to identify and by a well known painter. I'd love to use one of Mucha's pieces but I don't know enough about them to know which pieces are most famous. :/

I'd guess either the theater posters or the cigarette ads.

(Preferably not considering his commercial pieces.)
As far as I know all his well known work is commercial work. I think even the "Slav Epic" was a commision, wasn't it?

btw, it's customary to introduce yourself in the lounge before posting "Homework" threads.

Mucha might ba an artist more famous for the artists' adopting his affectations through the years rather than any single piece of his work. If I had to pick one that wasn't a blatant commercial job I'd say his Zodiac portrait, but his JOB rolling papers image might be the most famous.

You may want to approach this slightly backward and use your own memory to recall a popular image by any artist and work through your assignment that way.

    Good luck,

    ~Richard

His 4 seasons work may be more familiar.

This one is by far his most famous, but it's definitely commercial.

Asking for a famous non commercial Mucha is like asking for a famous non commercial Rockwell.

His commercial works (specifically theater posters) are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more well known and recognizable than any of his other stuff. It's hard to find anything else really, even most books show very little beyond his posters and design work.

I'd say either the Seasons or JOB. But with Mucha, it's really the STYLE that people recognize, not any one specific image.

Seconding RyerOrdStar. Alphonse is probably my first-most favorite artist of all time, and it's definitely the style that makes him most recognizable. The JOB image, though, I've seen repeatedly on posters, shirts, home accessories, etc. Hell, it's the cover to one of the many books on him I own even.
