    Another one

Had to start another one - it got dark in the museum and the guy who's running the lights is doing a horrible job!! Couldn't see anything on the other head I was drawing so I started doing this instead. I think about +1 hour...
I know it is too unfinished to show off but I thought it could be cool to show all the stages before it's finished. So this is first stage - composition, construction, and have it to look more or less like what I'm drawing.
Next step is details and light/shade...

    A few more hours....

Now the one eye is a bit more done(yes I draw slowly....), took some time to figure out the construction. Using 6b graphite and a a semi hard eraser.

The perspective of lips is a horrible thing, that's my conclusion!!!
I think now I've been at it for more than 13 hours...

    5 more hours!!

    A little more shade...

Starting to feel annyoed about pencil - thinking alot about using charcaol instead. I want to go darker and I really dislike the reflected light you see in a pencil drawing!

Starting work on the tone of the head... Takes some time... Now 37 hours in total! I figure I'll stop when I reach 50 hours - no matter the result!

i like your dedication! 37 hours?!?! - man, the longest time i have ever used on a drawing is 4 hours -good job. I used to draw slowly too but i have become faster and faster - just try to be a bit violent when drawing (i know it sounds weird).

btw what museum are you drawing at?

    cheers!

You are really working hard to understand the planes of the face. That will definately pay off down the road!

Be really careful with the placement of the features and try to draw only what you see. Our right (the sculptures left) side of his face seems to be a little bit low. His mouth and chin line up, but its at a slightly different angle then his nose and eyes. I hope this helps.

I think you are headed in the right direction. Nice work

41 hours in total - 9 hours left to completion!

I follow the russian school of drawing so there are really no fast ways of doing it - and I do not draw what I see, I construct everything from scratch.
Some things might be a bit off, but there really isn't anything I can do about it as my knowledge of anatomy and perspective isn't very good.

In the russian school of drawing you draw what you know, not just what you see. The emphasis is form. So an academical drawing in that sense isn't any different from a sculpture in clay! You draw form(light and shade is your own decision and construction and MUST follow form).
So of course when I draw in a museum I have to just decide the form from what I can guess and calculate (I view the sculpture from the side and front - I'm not alowed to touch the sculpture) - And if you look closely at many sculptures that wasn't made by Michelangelo or Bernini you'll see that they are often a bit uneven - this is also why it is better to contruct rather than just copy what you see. (you don't want to repeat the sculpturis mistakes!!)

I sit in "Statens museum for kunst" that is the main gallery in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Thanks for all comments, I will keep posting for another week, then I go to Italy to start study at Angel Academy of Art.

    almost 12 hours in total!

Took hours to construct the eyes, I'm more or less satisfied with the result. The direction of her view is now clear.
I've decided to give the background a very dark tone, and then shade the face with softer values.

This will definitely pay off, great approach at tackling planes and mass issues; inspiring.
