    Illustration Masters

I am currently in my 3rd year of Illustration at Sheridan.

Obviously I am not graduating soon, but it really is coming quite fast for me. My goal is to become an editorial illustrator, but I am not limiting myself in field, merely that is the subject matter I am most interested in.

I eventually would like to enter the Illustration as Visual Essay Masters at SVA.

My question is, to all you professional illustrators out there: Should I try (not saying I will get in, but at least try) to apply straight out of my current program or should I spend a few years (probably 5 at least) doing freelance?

How hard is it to go back to school after being in freelance for a while?

I'd definitely test the waters for a while before deciding if you should go back to school. You'll have a better idea of exactly what you need if and when you do. The vast majority of Masters students at SVA aren't coming straight out of a Bachelors program.

    Thanks, Elwell!

I had thought of that, since a Masters is not a light decision to make. Besides, I will probably be able to make my portfolio much better after a few years of focusing on art.
Though, from the examples I've seen on their site it doesn't seem to be as hard to get in there as it is into the Atelier, hah.
