Great portfolio advice from Jon Schindehette

    http://artorder.blogspot.com/2009/02...tion-from.html

The senior art director at Wizards of Coast gives some fantastic advice on portfolio and presentation. And if you don't already read his blog regularly, I'd strongly recommend it. It's one of the best out there.

A great read. I was lucky to get a review with him as well at the NY Comic Con. He and Richard Whitters (Magic concept artist) were really great to talk with. Both had a lot of really interesting and useful feedback on my portfolio, and both were happy to answer questions. It must be rough in a situation where you are reviewing so many portfolios in a few days, but they were both great to talk to even on Day 2.

One interesting things that he mentioned in his blog, and that he mentioned to me in person regarding my own portfolio, was that fewer pieces work better in many cases. I had 9 regular pieces in my portfolio, and 3 additional that I created just for them (spot illustrations in the style of their Monster Manual books). It felt like the standard portfolio size. Jon told me that while I had a good number that he felt that 5-6 would create a more powerful impact. I wouldn't normally consider such a compact portfolio unless I just didn't have enough pieces that I felt were both strong enough and appropriate to who I was talking with. The more I think about it though, I think anyone who knows art will likely see all they need to see in just a few pieces. If after 5-6 you haven't seen what you want to see, then more won't help. I think in the future I will definately show a smaller more powerful selection.

that was great. I was expecting the "usual" stuff, like keep it varied, make your best image first yadda yadda, but he actually went in depth in how to actually sell your portfolio when meeting a potential employer. Definitely appreciated it.
