Hey man, I'm pleased to see you're working on your values, sometimes a light background can blind you to the differences in value, starting with a medium tone in the back and then working your values from there can help. Remember, photos or anything from a webcam will distort the shapes by a few degrees. I was given the advice recently to work from a mirror instead for self portraits.

kungfoowiz: Yeah man, I was working from a mirror, but my mirror is only 6 inches tall so it's really difficult, I just did that one from a webcam just to mix it up for once, that's all. I normally do self portraits from mirror

Still Life study (about 45 minutes or so)

Hey bro! It's looking fantastic! You put in some great highlights on this one, I think you nearly got the brights just bright enough! Keep working the darks though. It looks like your webcam I think? =)

Hey bro, it's looking good, your eyes have much more contrast now, hair and clothing and even other features of your faces are coming along nicely. Have fun with your next piece. =)

    Kungfoowiz: Thanks man!

Here are some quick photo studies before bed (roughly 15 mins on each one)
Just trying to place the major values and colors for now to make sure it reads correctly, because I'm still training my eye to recognize the correct value/color

Whoa... excellent work here friend! For when you go for more values, the values generally get lighter as you go back. Also, like with the portraits, the camera simplifies values too, so look carefully at nature once in a while.

Keep up the good works bro and have fun with your next piece. =)

Thanks kungfoowiz; I hope in these two environments you can see how I made the values lighter towards the background.

1 study from a painting I found (not sure of the artist)
    1 photo study

Nice SB dude - you are really trying hard and the work is obviously paying off! Keep it up. I like the value studies, I should definitely do more of those myself.. Its cool that you have your heart set on the CA atelier - how did you find out about that can I ask?

ThomasM: Thanks for the kind words! I just found out about it through this site. I'm not sure exactly where I'll end up though, I mean depending on where I end up living in the next couple of years, I could end up going to TAD or just a regular atelier to get some mentoring to get to the next level. For now though I'm just working on my foundations and learning all I can on my own : ]

My word, those environments look sooo cool. Well done bro, I really like the first one in particular, although you nailed some nice contrasts in the valleys of the photo study.

Awesome value study for another of my favourite movies!

Nice, you are inspiring me to do some values too. Have fun with your nexts bro. =)

hello mate. You are doing a great work improving your values.I like how you simplified them in some pieces and kept a certain range that helped you avoid confusion.Keep it up

    Hey bro

Eye study looks great, even a partial study I might add. Honestly, I think you have made some real ground on your self portrait, it feels good. You have limited the values and are thinking about the form a lot more. The contrast of the features, eyes and such, are reading very nicely.

Some good choices of shadow and highlight on the colour hand too.

Umm, no real crit for the moment, have fun with your next study bro. =)

Looking good! I checked your SP thread also, nice ones there. But you seem to make eyes a bit too big in some of the pieces, watch out for it.
    Keep the good work!

Those studies are looking really good. I would say maybe slow down a bit and look at little more at precise shape.

Thanks guys! I'll slow down on the shapes a bit; in August I should definitely have a few really long studies to put up.

Here are some more fundamental things

Thanks guys, the studies have helped my head construction out a bit it seems over the past week. I've done some studies after Janaschi too and that's helped me too. Here's another

Hey bro, it's looking decent, the head feels really solid on the body. Maybe there is just a mistake by the corner of the lips, looks like the armour spilled onto the face slightly, other than this, it's a good piece. Have fun with your next work. =)
