    Scribblings of a retard

    Hey guys and gals

    This is it...

I WILL upload this sketchbook every day.

If I am to become a artist of any decent quality, I will upload this every day.

    I MUST!!!

I am a 17 year old, anorexic, teenage boy, who has extreme difficulty sitting down during the day, which effects my drawing, because I tend to only draw standing up, although I do sit down to work on my tablet in the evening. I work at Subway most days of the week and go art college every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I draw around 2-3 hours a day, but most of which is frustrated scribbling. I also find that I have a few days of drawings that I am happy with and then when trying to draw something similar it looks like shit, like I'm getting worse.

    Goals for this year:

    -Beat anorexia

    -Improve as an artist

    -Worry less

-Get at least 1 commission from anyone (including friends)

    -UPDATE!UPDATE!UPDATE!

    Hope this works

    Day 1:

Here's a small collection of stuff I've done in the last 2 Months or so, just a few of my favourite bits before the leap. After this I will only upload what I have done that day.

Thanks for taking the time to check out my sketchbook, I hope you tag along. Feedback would be really appreciated, I'm in a bit of a rut at the moment.

ha great start dude! I worked at Subway when i was 17, plus i was skinny as hell (still very skinny, btut tbh, just takes some settling into). You'l get their, the important bit is that you've set these things out.

Don't settle into shortcuts! your legs on characters shows this. You draw them a shorthand way that works alright but it kinda only reads as a coverup to a hole in your leg anatomy work. As soon as you see yourself covering up things you don't know how to do take a step back and face it.

Yeah man, great energy and variety in these bits & pieces. Everyone else is going to say the anatomy crit, so I'll just say it's vital but it's not everything. Keep the energy in those guys and ghouls while learning. The enviro studies are really good too. I'll keep popping back in...

Thanks Donalfall, that means alot to me.

Your right about my anatomy though. There is a severe lack of life drawing classes in my area (I've only ever been to one, and even then the model was fully clothed)

Do you have any tips on how to practice anatomy effectively, ie, drawing the same limb or bone over and over until you can draw it well, copy out of books, copy off of photos, etc.

Which method do you find most helpful?

Smarty has the right of it. Posemaniacs & Kindgirls for your websites, Bridgeman, Richter & Loomis for your book research, keep a good eye on the reference section here at CA.org. Head over to the ARC international website, look up some old master artists and copy their anatomy sketches.

And when you're in work and you have either a glossy magazine in front of you or even advertising hoardings on the wall that feature, say, a hand or hands, start copying them. Then an arm or arms. And so on. Mix it up a lot. If you start getting bored of hands, change for a while. If you find you're doing particularly well at something, change for a while. If you do a load of things well and try and do another and it sucks, change for a while and go back to it later. And have fun with it. You should take it seriously, but it's not a life sentence. Later, looking forward to seeing tomow's update.

Thanks Donalfall, I have tried this technique before; the copying body parts from magazines and stuff, I will really go at it tomorrow. I've had a flick through several anatomy books and get over-whelmed with the content, like, 'OHmygods I gotta draw all that?!?!'

I will definitely do alot more drawing from life as you've suggested, as I tend to draw to much from imagination.

    Thanks again.

Nice drawings around, sure you're improving a lot! One thing our drawing teacher would recommend us, in order to not get into the drawing without a previous approach, was to do four or five thumbnails with different ideas about the composition. Then, choose the best one, and repeat it in four or five variations, to choose again the best one. That refining process should be done about 8-10 times, so even before starting the big drawing, you know well all the structure and the parts of it. This way those frustrated scribblings and started-but-not-finished ones stop being a problem.

Well, I hope it helps! Keep them up though, your volcano and some of this characters are looking really good!

    Cheers for the tip Abrodos.

When I do decide to do a big piece it does tend to fall apart due to poor planning. I was curious to know how many thumbnails people do. I have a tendency to either draw a few until I draw one I like, or not do them at all.

I'll keep your input in mind next time, thanks.

hi! i like your studies! working great on that toned paper. you might wanna try to take it to the next level by adding shading in black pencil and white shading for the highlights on the msucles. oh and maybe you can use the white to cut out the figure but not around everywhere but just on the sides where the light comes from (or if you are doing full shading just "cut out" the areas where the figure is in shadows to add a couter step) (white, black/white) if that makes sense i did a study in pencil and oil chalk on toned paper in which i shaded the lights in white and on some of my latest portraits i used that counterstep technique (e.g. a girl with dark hair its usefull to put a bright background behind her to make her pop out!)

Cheers Katzenminze. I was thinking about doing that, the white, black/white thing. I'll give it a go now.

In regards to the white chalk, should I just put it along the out of where the light is shining from (ie, light to the right, white to right of figure) or put a thin line of white along the side in shadow, so it's sorta like abient light?

Oh well only one way to find out.

    Thanks for the comment.
