I thought I'd post some comments on a few form the last couple pages..

masque: Id run from that witch too. Nice colours in your shading. I like that old style.

WunderDark: I like how you've changed the scene.. it's much more creepy and tells a bit of a story I find. Doesn't look like that kid knows whats going to happen.. lol

D@niel: Great movement and style in your work.. Although i liked the right arm placement better before. I thought you just need to turn her hand around and the arm would have looked fine.

Christoffer: I agree with Daniel having a candle light source from below would really make that scene scary.

trevor: I like the form and your idea of having the horseman as part of her in some way.

Tommoy: Great character concept! I can almost her what kind of sounds she would be making. Does remind me of the dark crystal a bit.

benu: Nice approach in making baba a full bird like creature.

Doomstagg: I like your idea of having the dogs as her servants. Each being different.

    Artofinca: I love your concept.

MrAnimation: Nice, thats one serious mortar and pestle.

Cubesoflard: The lighting is nice. I like her head and back piece.

blackrobin.. I like the colours your using.

    Sulk-sal. Great head piece.

Sung-jae Kim: I like the expression on her face. A little different angle than others.. I'd like to see some more of the props and clothing your going to add with her.

Ionic. Great scene.. That expression on her face is amazing..

Venger: I enjoy your mood you've greated with your texture and colours.. great concept drawing also.

Back to work.. no more time..

Yeah D@niel, what trevor said about the elbow area, and if you put the wraps on her arm in more perspective that would fix the original pic. But I like this new pose way better, she holding her thing with her head, and the placement of the arm is way more dynamic now I think, and she looks crazier hah

wow - great subject and great thread, I'm really blown away by all the incredible entries. Have to call out Dan, Ionic, Matt Dixon, Posh Spice, Boyo, Dan Liimatta, Tommoy, D@niel, Venger and Wiggers for blatant excellence, but everyone's looking good.

I'm very late to the game and not sure I'll be able to work up a finish in time, but this subject's just too sweet to pass up:

You know you've spent too much time working on an image, when you dream about Baba Yaga huts! That asides, here are few of my thoughts on some of the images.

Antne- I really like what you did with the lines in the sketches. I just love that second sepia colored one- to me it's the strongest of the 4 wips. The rendered version looks great as well, but it looses a lot of details and textures that you created with your brush strokes earlier. (and somehow the lighting feels stronger on the sepia one as well) All in all I do like your image a lot.

Blackrobin: That looks great so far, I love color choices, and the design of the mortar.

Benu: This is probably not what you'd like to hear, but I like the prior version better. I felt there was more focus on the character, and I really liked the background colors. It appears you had reflective lighting on her skin coming from the green sky below, and that was a nice and subtle touch. The black shadows in the newer version of the image are a bit overpowering in my opinion.

On the positive note, I love her birdlike figure, the design of the mortar and the feathers. Her face is great as well ( I like her nose a lot and those things that hang off her cheeks), and you created great sense of motion. I hope this is at least a bit helpful to you, and that I haven't offended you

So many cool entries this round! I got inspired and did a little sketch in my mini moleskine. I'm not sure if i'm gonna finish this one, but i think i'll polish the pencils some more (some value work in particular) then play with it in photoshop and call it done. I love playing with the tiny moleskine, i don't get bored halfway through finishing a page!

PS: This post was made by Slash, but under petite's name, since i'm too tired and lazy to log off then back on. ^^

Well, here's a little something from me... Got stuck with my IDW (skull-mortar) so I did this...
Don't really know much about the myth, but does Baba always have to be an old, fat, ugly, wrinkly hag?

I think I'm gonna have to vote for everybody this round, as it seems. Sooo many great entries. Don't want to change with daestwen, who has to pick out the ones that go to poll.

No way. If I didn't want crits like this, i'd go to deviantart. Yeah, it seems, i've overdone it. Maybe the cropped version works better.

Inkfish: Really like your flesh on her face. Man she's hideous One thing that I noticed is that I feel like her feet and lower area in general could use a softer edge, it being so misty and all. Good work though.

nateshaw try using some more greens or blues in your shadows since your ambient light seems to have a reddish hue.

looking back a few pages, i love your work wiggers...
it's not that spooky, or evil, not too nightmare like or bizarre either, it's rather grey to some extent,.. it's like the real thing, if you would ever encounter it.. and that gives the whole piece a nice subtle creepy accent.

I was listening to Alice In Chains when I started this, hence the flannel.
Next is adding more detail to colors.

    Artina Wips update

    hey everyone,
this is a truly amazing challenge. Some great pieces so far. Very inspirational work. This is an wip update. I've been busy so I haven't had time to post and whatever free time I had I used it to work on my piece. I've been trying a new method of painting for me and I'm happy with how it's coming along.
I will post my final tomorrow. Good luck to all!

Some see the glass half full. Others see it half empty. I just try to see the glass!

Benu: You know, now that I see the newest version of the image, I like where you are going with it again (so that would basically mean - disregard what I said earlier )

Poshspice - Thanks! I'm still playing with how to do backgrounds just because I'll drive myself insane if I try to draw a tree, never mind a whole forest, and this forces me to think about the general shapes rather then each individual tree leaf.

    AsurA - Thanks!

I actually think I might be done. That can't be right. I never finish anything this early. Either way, this was a lot of fun and there are some amazing entries. I can't wait to see what the Final Burning brings.
