It's very simple, first you lay in some colours and then throw in a texture, each situation requires different blending mode for desired effect, sometimes multiply sometimes overlay, etc.
Back then i didn't know alot tho, it's wise and rather good taste to paint over textures , to make them actually your work' not only overlayed texture.

Quick conceptual sketch of a scarecrow mob.

Here i tried to draw my father while he was sleeping, unfortunately he woke up and didn't let me finish! My old man does not like to be visualized on paper \

(the last 2 were shot on a different (worse) camera and their quality is painful)

Argh it's so freakin' cold and windy, i think i'm going to be sick again.

Today I sat down and thought I'll give my imagination a test, and here's the effect. (shot on the exact same shitty camera as those last 2 above, And forgot to load batteries ><) I did not use any refference for this one, what you see here is 100% brainfart.

There's alot things not even vsible on this photo, i'll shot a better quality one when i load my better camera.

He looks indian thats cool, I would suggest to change your shading method, it seems like his face is metallic try to make less reflections and just think in contrast, when something is Dark whatever is next to it will be way more brighter and the the other way around, that way you be needing all these side reflections to bring out form.

Hmm now as you mentioned it he certainly looks indian.
As for the shading, i won't change it i just need to improve it ;]
I was aiming for the effect that guys at Watts Atelier achieve, and this was an experiment, I was trying to get to know how they do it and with what tools.
So it's abit of everything in here: natural charcoal, 2B, F and Conte pencils.

Now i know that Watts suggest Conte 1710B and 2B, i went to 2 artist stores and didn't find any of those :/

I truly love Watts drawing style but the fact that his atelier is located in the US and A makes it almost impossible for me to attend to. If I would live
in U.S <wakes up in the reality> ehhh.

P.S They draw like this: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/att...6&d=1254893717

    EDIT:

Ok I've found some Conte products and have ordered them online, now i just have to wait for the package.

Cool colours, and the use of textures in that samurai speedpaint is really good. Work on anatomy and proportions, trying to understand the structure of things when doing a study. Keep up the good work!

A little bit of fun in ps today: Bananna lust!
This was painted for a speedpainting contest, but I already passed the time limit by 10 minutes.
So i din't have time to fix some stuff
(perspective may be off, as i have very limited knowledge about it, will work on it one day)

yeah man, this is great! I love the colors and the lighting effects you did between the buildings it kicks hamsters butt!
the man is totally out of proportion which kinda ruins it but thats the only major thing I would fix, and also looks like he is pointing to a different direction then the Kings. good job overall!

Those characters were added in a rush as this was a speedpainting contest with a time limit, but you are totally right. I have to focus on proportions. Anyhoot (like this word) I'd be going to art course for all this year, so i might learn some usefull stuff. Don't for get to update your sketchboook Danny! <hugs>

Maybe i'll finish this piece one day.

EDIT: Another quickie speed just for fun, without any refference. Came out like Blizzard's warcraft arts lol.

EDIT: OK, i'm actually so pissed of how miserable my anatomy knowledge is that i made some drastical decisions.
From now on the proportions between studies and imagination stuff will be 80/20, that's right folks.
No more lazing around, time to actually grab a pen/ grip pen/ pencil/ vine charcoal and whatever else is left out there
and freking improve already! Grrr i'm determined but i hope that's good, more studie sin general, color/anatomy/composition/perspective. OH and thank you Dave Rapoza aka mr. Delicious , your
videos actually opened my eyes. Now everyone go have icecream and have a great day.

I'll be back, i'll be back improved! Or i'll die tryin'!
