Love your sketchbook. Just joined CA today, and found your sketches inspiring me to try different things then what I usually attempt while sketching.

It's not really a "talent"...it's more like a "skill in development".

    Towy: Thanks man

BlaqCat: Thank you very much. I'm happy that I'm able to inspire you, I'll keep working hard.

I've been looking at the work of Anthony Jones lately , robotpencil.org. He just posted a gif of a new process for drawing robots. Here is my first stab at it with about 3 hours of work. Was tons of fun. In other news I have my art blog up and running. Feel free to check it out at jacalart.blogspot.com

Trying to push my speed painting and sketching skills. The first two are from imagination. The last one is a study of Jon Mccoy. He is a wicked concept artist, lots of energy in his environments that I really dig.

Some gesture practice and another speedpaint. About 2 hours. I'm not super excited with how this one turned out. Mostly with the city and lack of "city look and feel". I might have to try some photo overlay. If anyone has any advice on how to approach sci fi concept art I'm all ears

Here is some character concept art I've been working on for an I-Phone game. It's been challenging trying to develop a look for a game from the ground up. It took many sketches to get to this point, but I'm happy with the results. The style isn't what I usually draw but I like the experience of trying new things.

ThumbprintGallery: Thank you!! I'll keep working hard

Fourth semester TAD schoolwork is starting to kick into gear. Here are a bunch of thumbnails for an environment concept as well as a page for our first assignment for High Vis class with Jason Felix. We get to illustrate a Magic Card. Super fun!

The changing quality of your work from time to time is astounding!
Some of the stuff I don't really like and other stuff I absolutely love like the colorful portrait.
However too much saturation can often be a little hard to look at. Using more muted tones in areas that are not that important or where the light is more grey anyway will help making the saturated tones pop more and also help with composition.
Also, try using less black. The problem with having too much of the same black in different parts of the images is that they appear to be at the same depth, at least at first sight. Try to differentiate between very dark and black to add more dimension.

    I hope that helps
    Keep up the good work!

Xelar: Thanks for the feedback. I love to experiment and there are bound to be failures. It's the only way I'm going to weed out what doesn't work for me As far as black goes, part of the issue is different screen calibrations. I've noticed that my computer screen shows a larger value range then most so what looks a dark grey to me just looks black to everyone else. Otherwise you are on par with everything you've said. Stuff I'm already working on

Decided to do a Wes Burt character study today. I can see my proportions are slightly different and I need to practice my sensitivity to line weight. He has such a great eye for design and line that I think this study is really going to help me push my character design. Original on the left.

I like those environment thumbs, they really pull you in. How's TAD treating you? It looks like you are learning. Where are you from in WI?

IanLlanas: Thanks! I had fun with those environments. TAD is great, lots of hard work and tons of information. It has helped me grow so much. I currently live in Milwaukee WI.

Some more character roughs. I'm currently at about 3 hours a piece on these. I want to get down to 1 hour. Practice practice

Practice practice. Anatomy studies are 5 - 10 minutes. Character thumbs are around 40 minutes a piece. Working hard to get them down to 15 - 20 minutes which is right around production speed.

Here is an in progress shot of another portrait for a friend. Lighting still feels off somehow. Gonna let it rest then find some reference before going into color.
