[ As the steaming volcano grows ever more threatening, it becomes unsafe to send manned craft to investigate. ]

[ Our P.O.V. is rather close to the drone. ]

Ghosd pick your best tool for it - I'd avoid too much experimentation early on.

    good with pencils? do.
    good with crayons? go.
good with - you get the point.

Since you need to tackle the problem of the DSG it self, you don't want to tackle the tools as well.

    hope that helps.

of course you should be creative, but there is little point in you picking a tool you have never used, for something you have never done - piling up too many problems to solve.

heh, it's Similar to mine - anyway the first thing that comes to mind is values.

You have a really black, black volcano - this could be fine, but then your smoke is really white, not as extremely so - but close. This could in theory be a nice style, but - you have shaded your drone. So I'd either brighten the volcano, darken the smoke - or make the drone as extreme value wise as the rest (kill the grays and only leave black and white).

    anyway have fun.

Ghosd - the first 'trick' I ever learnt is that holding down alt turns turns your brush into the eyedropper - you can use that to select an intermediate colour and build up a bit of a gradient that way.

    ---

~50mins, PS - I think really I just wanted to use the cool new brush I made yesterday (see background)

I decided to go with an underwater volcano. I guess some octopi can detect "infra-sounds" or something that a volcano puts out before it erupts allowing them enough time to flee. Thus the octopus-ish drone?
Also tried using different brushes. Was fun.

It's not really important - most programs that allows opacity and pressure sensitivity would allow me to make something like that. I did use photoshop , but that's because I work in it all day (textures ), so it's the easiest tool at hand. But you could use a host of other programs.

Onyx, nice one, the perspective could benefit if you would tighten up the drone with some harder lines.
Sudsy, its very rough, 2 hours? Those oil brushes are great, wish they were available in photoshop.
Dunefishuk, nice brush you made. Good angle also.
DanLiimatta, great sketch, the 5 sek stands for the price of the mag, not the time spend?
PeterHurman, I love it, nice dronedesign. Only crit is the reds dominate a little too much imo.
R-marz, good movement in the lava. The drone could be made more interesting.
Anthis, nice one, i only have doubts about the color of the lava. The helicopter effect is subtle.
Ikjhgfdsa, a lot is going on, after seeing the drone and volcano i had to scroll a long way down for the rest of the story. Nice execution though.
jthierba, good use of textures but blur it if its more in the background.
Epicnoses, nice colors, about the lighting, i guess the half dark side is the lens so let it shine like a mirror.
Buritto, nice and rough, interesting use of different brushes.
Hamsta, I like the mountain ridge, that Russian AUV could easily be a prototype of the space shuttle.
Citricacid, I like your approach being under water. The dark tone and use of different brushes make it look good.
Pentagear, very nice, i like the realistic effect. Maybe giving the background a hunch of a forrest would make it even more realistic.

Tommoy; Thanks Tommoy. I just tried out the motion blur. Thanks for mentioning the colour. I did not use ref for the lava which I should have. Happens more often because of a colour deficiency.

Nice job on shaping that volcano, I think the dark ridge is working very nicely. I like the subtle texture, especially on the inside of the crater, shrouded by the smoke. It seems fairly small for a volcano though, but I'm guessing that was your intention.

unmanned drone is not unmanned... thought it added more tension to have people in the scene, also it makes it easier to tell scale. ~1hr Photoshop.
