Nice mantis And I guess I didn't see the glacier and bear before I posted, but they're awesome. That glacier really gives that sense of a massive thing and I can definitely see what you mean about that advice you left me about mine. And that bear is so ferocious! rawr.

    As usual, great stuff, man...

That mantis is really funny! However, its right eye is a tad too big, and makes its head look slightly out of balance to me.

The iceberg looks amazing. The way you subtly used the small ship and perspective to convey its sheer size is really, really good. Basically, everything in it is great.

The Vitruvian baseball player is really good, but I find the standing pose to be a bit out of balance. Maybe that's the way it goes, but I think he's about to fall. I would pull his left leg a bit backwards to make him look stronger, I think.

Anyway, everything looks killer as usual, just as I stated before!

Sonia Leticia: Thanks a lot, Sonia!
odiolitos: Thanks for the vote of confidence! For the baseball player I see what you mean about him tipping over a little bit. When pitching they'll lunge forward as they kick their leg out, so really he is falling forward; but I dunno if he doesn't look stable it could end up looking wrong. Thanks for pointing it out!

Today we have more zombie stuff. This one is going to be a cover image. And I did some Bridgman today, quick and loose (inaccurate and meaningless).
Well it's back to painting for the commissions...

Well, fast and loose is a good thing to do from time to time, specially with anatomy studies, where one can get a bit too precious, so that's good in my book!

Regarding the pitcher, yeah, I thought about that, and wasn't sure whether to post the comment or not, but that's me: better sorry than safe It may read better with a first pose, before plunging forward, don't you think?

Oh, and I won't sleep well tonight thanks to your zombie thingy here. Nice!

This should be it for today; I gotta paint for a commission and then go to work. bleh.

It's cool to see you start doing anatomy studies. I really think your work has a great richness in tone like others have said in previous posts. I do think human anatomy is something you can still work on and maybe focus some more time on that. I still need to work on that as well. It would also be interesting to see a color piece from you. How come you don't use color at all? I'm just curious.

Woah. That tornado kicks some big-time ass, man!! It's just what I was going for (but got caught up in colouring...) The perspective and how you composed the dust clouds was just amazing... Very nice!!

Istmin52: Thanks a bunch for your compliments! There actually is some color work on page two and maybe 3, but the reason I'm not doing any color works right now is because I'm currently focusing in on drawing at the moment as a point to improve on. So I just want to put all my energy towards that for now.
    Sonia Leticia: Thanks, Sonia!
odiolitos: I'm really glad that you like it! Thanks, Odiolitos!

The first drawing is of Toshiro Mifune. Yeah, I didn't really do a good job. I guess I gotta train up my ability to see and remember all the details. I was going for a Rashomon vibe with it.
After that it's just my Brigdman studies from the day.

Tomorrow I'll try to put up the commissioned work that I've been toiling with for the past month.

Damn, the forum swallowed my previous message and I didn't take the precaution of copying it...

Anyway, I love the skin tones on all those nice people, and how you've used complementaries to pull the volumes. That's just what I'm working on at the moment... I also liked the fish, but am not sure about it being so pink: it sure makes it stand out, but takes from the underwater feel... I also think the blood would look better if it floated a bit up from its mouth.

But take all of this with a pinch of salt, because overall, I loved your post as much as usual: it's just my nitpicky side

Marian Rowling: Thanks! I'm trying to beat the curve!
odiolitos: Thanks, odiolitos! These pieces have actually been a nice confidence boost for me. Until these it usually took quite an effort to get the work done in a way I was satisfied with. These just sort of got done. It was nice. Anyway, yeah the fish is actually not supposed to be underwater; he's flying over a swamp. (It's a funny gigantic flying fish with bug wings). I think my color choice for the background, along with the vagueness of it, was kind of a mistake. Thanks for the crits! Every little bit helps.

Today I did some more Bridgman. Hopefully I'll be all done with the book tomorrow so I can more on to more meaningful exercises.
Also I did a little paint sketch to test out a new brand of paint. Old Holland New Masters Classic Acrylics Titanium White Extra Opaque. It failed. It isn't really any more opaque than Golden's Titanium White. Oh well.

This stuff is from today and yesterday. I may start skipping posting on Mondays, Wednesdays and maybe Fridays. It'll help me to get more done with a little less stress. We'll see.

So I finished my mindless copying of Bridgman, so I did a quick doodle of a dragon/monster slaying to celebrate (pretty weak) then finished a page of DSG's.

Now I've headed over to Yoitisi's Island. That stuff is really hard and I totally suck at it. So I guess I have a lot of progress to make I made a new scanner preset for it so it's not quite as intrusive.

Istmin52: Thanks, Man. Bridgman is good stuff. It's one of those texts that you start out with and then keep coming back to and getting more and more out of. I actually have a hard copy of the book. Good investment.

Wow I've been missing for about 10 days now. Whoops. So what I was doing during that time was finishing up Yoitisi's Island, then I read all of the Loomis books. I didn't actually do any copying or exercises, but I took some notes and tried to assimilate as much of the ideas as I could. Then, I built a funny sketchbook (well a copy paper holder thingy) with a rope on it so I can wear it around my neck and draw basically all the time. Those scribbly pages are blind contour drawings done with that nerdy box. I'll see if I can put a picture of it up with the next post. We'll see if I actually end up using it though. So then I was going to begin my long arduous journey of anatomy learnings, but I realized a better approach. Instead of copying and trying to memorize anatomical drawings (which I've done plenty of before), I'm going to try to simplify the human forms and gradually get more and more specific. So right now I'm deciding what the main forms are (rib cage oval, limbs cylindrical, head oval, feet wedges, etc), then I'm going to take a look at photos and anatomy illustrations to get generalized muscle and bone groups, then more specific, on and on. I think it'll help keep everything in context and understandable in the most useful way (learning the exact shape of the ulna from all viewpoints is great and all, but it's unlikely to have a real impact on my work right away). Soo that's where I'm at. sally forth.

umbinc: Thanks! Yeah practice, practice practice!

IDW 141. Ok so I blocked in the values for the painting and then I did a quick color test in photoshop. Um yeah, my arctic rally car is looking a little more like an arctic mini van. At least I can see something is wrong with it. That's not currently helping all the perspective and construction issues though. I guess the good in this though is that it's obvious what I need to focus on to improve. Drawing and construction.

I need to get back to my figure studies too.

This is the opaque part of the color stage. After this I have one more step to glaze all of the rest of the color on. I'm kind of excited about it because I've found a new glazing medium to try out with it. We'll see if it works or not.

    ***Edit***
Yeah it doesn't work. Normally I use Golden Satin Glazing Liquid, with Golden Flow release added and that mix seems to work better than this Golden Self Leveling Clear Gel. This stuff just doesn't self level enough. Sure it reduces the appearance of brush marks, but it doesn't eliminate them. Plus it seems to dry too fast to get a good even coat. I'm going to continue to experiment with it (since I have 8 oz of the stuff), but for this piece I'm going to have to finish it digitally.

    ***Edit***
    Ok all done

This is a dump for the pages I've done over the past few days. I haven't really been keeping up with my drawing because I've been distracted by other (more fun) things. I think I'm going to try to do drawings for the weeklies and such, but not actually paint them. It'll help me feel creative while not moving me away from drawing. Hey, if I can only make drawings, maybe I'll actually put an appropriate amount of effort into them!

    Oh yeah and DSG 1579.

    Need to study more...
