    Hey Kevin,

    Great drawings here man!

About Max's books... there are 3 total that i own. the first one is called "Faces" and was published probably at least 7-8 years ago. i looked high and low for it and eventually had to look online. i found my copy at alibris.com

his second book is called "faces and figures" (i think-- i'm not at home near my books right now). i actually bought that from Max himself in a parking lot--we've met by accident a couple of times. you might still be able to get a copy of that one around town. the print quality is not that good in a few spots, but to make up for that there are a lot of pictures of his sculptures and terracottas. they're phenomenal.

all of the books were originally selling for 20$ each, but who knows what people will ask for them if they're out of print.

your best bet really is to contact him directly. since you know Orbik, ask him for Max's home number and call him. (Max teaches on Monday or Tuesday mornings at CAI.) Max may have some extra copies stashed around his home. if you hit it off with him, try to find a way to stop by his house and see some of the originals.

    Great work here, Kevin.
Pushing those rhythms.....this one is simple unfinished, but describes alot.
    Beautiful. http://www.conceptart.org/forums/att...1&d=1246668401
All the new work on your blog is terrific. You've put in some quality time in your paintings. Your color sense is quite nice.

Are you trekking to Glen's class at all this summer? Sounds like your sessions were interrupted.

Id love to see some original character art now, you seem to have a great understanding of anatomy and proportion, your rendering skills are good. You enver mentioned where you want to take YOUR ART? Venture out and let your mind loose, all the knowlege needs to be put to use with our own characters! =-]

Hey thanks for dropping by my sketchbook. Unfortunately no I'm not in AAU, too poor to afford art school. But good eye, I'm glad that you recognized Isabel. She definitely is one of my favorite models from figure drawing. She came into our painting class at ccsf on our last day of class. So here comes the barrage of questions:

-For oils are you using mostly flat brushes? (so far that is all I got).
-As for your gorgeous charcoal studies, along side with charcoal pencil for the general shading do you use a stick of vine or compress? Or is it all just charcoal pencil?
-Would you think working with a limited pallette be more helpful?

Keep up the awesome works and thanks for your time.

    -Frank

    dessinateurimpulsif - thank you -
Mac - thank you and you're welcome too!
i never thought i would utter the words "thank you hell" but thank you ( hellart!)
Thanks for the info Chris ! I'll get up my nerve and ring him up and see what the deal is.. keep up the beautiful work !
E - thanks.. oh.. so MUCH to learn about painting ( and drawing..)
BigJoee - those photos are in his "How I make a Picture" book - and they are very small but good little black and whites .. i just held the book open next to me at my drafting table and.. drew!
Frank - always say super nice things - thank you .. i will be checking your stuff next! yes, ahem.. I even had to do some reduction because .. well .. I'm a guy and a moron.. they're all just forms right ? right ?
Jmonster - hah! yes I'll maybe give that a shot.. I am mostly focused on figure/life drawing and painting but this IS concept art right ? I will take the challenge and see how wrong it all goes!
Frank: I painted Isabel today at AAU with Henry Yan.. I showed her your painting - she was jazzed to see it..
Oil Brushes: yes - especially with allaprima paintings as you can get plains built more quickly that way than with filberts or rounds; but with longer, more careful paintings I will use more rounds and filberts and my eggbert!
Almost 99% of the charcoal work you see here is charcoal pencil. wolff's carbon or conte noire black ( 4b, 4b and 2b respectively).. I like vine and big chunks and compressed but don't use them unless I'm drawing on good paper where softer is good-er..
    Porg - thanks so much!!!!!!!
A Limited palette is absolutely an excellent way when you are starting out.. there are so many ways to skin the cat but if you had: Titanium White ( or Flake White), Cad Yellow LIght, Yellow Ochre, Cad Red LIght and Burnt Umber you can make a beautiful painting with forms and values and darks and lights.. add a blue like ultramarine or cerulean and a green like terra verdi ( green earth hue from utrecth) and/or Olive green to expand that palette..

Oh it's Isabel!! Your Isabel's are on a whole other level compared to the one I did. I appreciate the subtle and delicate treatment you done on the skin. Thank you so much for the advice. Anyways, happy first Wednesday of the month. (aka free zoo/museums day). Take care.

i remember those...so honored to see all the awesomeness in person, so motivated. You're an inspiration to me.

My main lazy plan of the week didn't go through..wanted to go to the zoo for my first time and to do some sketching, but the place was SO crowded i had to go another day Finished reading a good book last night, and now, especially after seeing this, i must draw! Thank you S'ire Kevin!
