holy CRAP! seriously seriously nice stuff in this sketchbook. I am so glad I stumbled across this sketchbook. I will be doing studies of (probably all) the figure sketches in here in an attempt to learn this style. 5 stars and subscribed for sure! Maybe even a new favourite sketchbook!

It has made my day finding this goldmine of great works!

A few new items - figures, heads and whatnot..

Thank you, first of all, everyone for the .. well the commentary kind of blew me away - maybe something is working in these things after all! I am humbled by the feedback I get here. And it is all very much appreciated!

    -Kevin

and here now- the news.. oh - these from-life -gestures are my first in at least a month.. the studio/walk-in for these has no direct light ( to me, necessary to do useful quick drawings) so they don't have such sure shadows ( cast and terminator and form).. I can't wait to get back to real (good) light! head studies in graphite from photo refs and final painting an unfinished work from the Guild Atelier.. from life..

Hey Kev! stuning updates, as always, great inspiration. I wanted to ask you, what do you use to apply the charcoal on the tone area? brush, cloth or some other stuffs?

Mawh - thank you - I hope the lesson was good! ( I need some!)
Malakuko - thank you - myself as well!
Justas - thanks !! mostly just the side of a given pencil but sometimes - like in some of these recent ones I will pull out the chamois to lose and even some tone.. to lose lines and information after a cast or terminator shadow.. it can add to the light and shadow /painterly effect (vs just a drawing).. at least that's the idea! I have recently tried brushes but on the smooth newsprint there is not much effect.
    wr00m - thank you !
Nuno - thank you very much for your kind words!
Marioucci - wow - cheers and I visited your work - lots of great stuff - I think you might be a fan of Jenny Saville ?
    Odayga - thank you!

Some new figures.. beginning work on a careful long-pose portrait - we'll see how that goes!

all of these are from life and from 1-20 minutes..

a Composite of life drawings from Saturday 1 15 11 at Army street

My only wish for the walk-in drawing deals is: GET SOME GOOD LIGHTING.. none of them really do so I suffer and do my best with shapes and some notion of terminator and cast shadow..

.. a composite of today's drawings ( and one from last time to help the composition.. sort-of!) - all from the live model, on mostly smooth newsprint ( a few on rough - I ran out of smooth!)..1-20 minutes nothing more.. conte sanguine pencil..

Oh, and because ThomasM mentioned it, now I'm curious too... Are you left-handed?

Hi Kevin loving the updates. I really admire how few lines you are able to use and yet capture such expressive poses. You always make me want to try harder. I can sympathize with the poor lighting you mention as I have the same problem at my class which makes it very difficult even when squinting away. Do you think in these situations it would be better to just use the model as a starting point and rely more on your knowledge of lighting forms? I don't have that knowledge yet myself but I'm sure with your experience you do.
