DSG 1445: Creature • FRIGHTENING LAND-ANIMAL LOOKS LIKE A DOG W/ QUALITIES OF A SHARK

[ I was petting the belly of a hyper-cute little black & tan Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that I know, and was struck by how the general shape of its mouth and flush jaw reminded me of a shark. ]

[ I thought: "If this little pup had the creepy round eyes of a shark on the sides of its head, it would be both eerie and novel." ]

    [ Thus todays topic. ]

[ Seems to me like it's a combo that just hasn't been fully explored, and desperately needs to be. ]

[ Different types of dogs and sharks have various looks/features that could be capitalized on creatively... ]

[ As usual, studying a bit of reference is a very good idea; It teaches us things. ]

[ ...Try to steer clear of just sticking a fin on the back of a Doberman, though. That's lazy. ]

    [ ]

@oblivion_dragon: The predatory hunch of the creature's back is really successful in this sketch. In the final result, I'm confused as to what the abstract shape on its neck is -- not the gills, but the half-circle. An ear?

@ Physicalpariah: Hats off to you for creating something I would NEVER want to see in real life. The use of two sets of 'hind' legs is really interesting, and the mouth is damn intimidating. The pitbull-style dog breed was a good choice for this combination.

@MiphistonX: The detail in which you did the mouth is total eye candy for the rest of the sketch. Great shark eye, btw.

@Alison B: Using a whippet was a very creative idea. The coloring and eyes I get, but if I didn't know the prompt I would just assume it was a creepy whippet.

@Killa Dade: Wow, your cross-hatching shows way more patience than I'll ever have. The musculature is great. Maybe you were rushed for time, but if you ever wanted to go touch this up, I'd suggest even. more. teeth.

Mine might be a little late. XD

Mine's unfinished, so maybe I shouldn't've posted it. I sketched it at first but it was too light, so I started to ink the head... then promptly got distracted by something shiny.

(It's a bulldog-hammerhead hybrid with a very strange vestigial hind leg.)

Thanks guys for the positive comments, all looking sweet! Southern, as always your sketches are awesome. Killa Dade, Love yours my only crit is that it wants colour! Malignant Librarian, I dig the design and would love to see it finished! btw, I feel the pain of distraction by shininess!

I thought, mammal + fish = amphibian(?). Feel like I might have gone too far toward Jurassic Park here, though.
