Stillworks Sketchbook - Crits needed! Updated Daily

Hey all, my name is Grant. I'm in my last year of high school before heading off for college. Sorry for the quality as some of these had to be taken with a digital camera.

I started taking art seriously two years ago and, after several suggestions decided to post up some work here to get feedback and constructive criticism. Most of this work is from a portfolio I'm working on for submission to an art college in the new year.

I'll post some more tomorrow if I can get my scanner to work.

Can't get the scanner to work as of yet so all of these were taken with our Olympus digital camera. I've tried to place them in chronological order. The first two are self portraits and the last one is a negative study of goggles in a box.

Kind of screwed up on the shading in the first two I think.

You need to practice your anatomical structures. Try posemaniacs.com
or find classes you can take to practice drawing figures.
Your portraits look rather flat and they're lacking a 3D look

Well, sadly my scanner is actually fried on me so I'll take a look at it tomorrow or get a new one. Hence these had to be taken with my camera, sorry about that. As for life drawing courses I'm still looking around and found one in the city center which I'm waiting for them to get back to me. These pictures below were all done off posemaniacs. Sorry I could not do more of them as practice exam papers are taking up a good portion of my time at the moment.

Drawing till sundown // Updated Jan. 17

More work, been rather busy with school, so haven't had that much time to post it. Been looking through a Bridgman book I bought and it's helping with proportions. Still can't fit an entire figure that well on the page but I'm getting there! Also the new power adapter for my scanner should be here by next week so hopefully it'll be bye bye digital camera.

inmygucci: Could your recommend any books that might help with dealing with proportion? (besides Bridgman it's recommended here on the site a lot so thought to pick it up)

Studying for my exams have been keeping me busy for a while, a long while. That along with a portfolio class(submitted a college, when I get more time I'll put it up here) still, managed to attend a life drawing session on the cheap during it(for 5 euro none the less) and practicing when I can. images are arranged from eldest to most recent. More on the way once I reboot my computer.

I really like the painting with the respirator.

The half skull half lady's forehead looks squashed.

Keep it up i'm rooting for you.

More stuff scanned in after studying. That last one is supposed to be a sniper, was thinking of making a longer rifle but not sure if it woudl throw the balance of the picture off or not.

Exams have me mega busy but I've been doing some studies on Loomis and from Kevin Chen(to help with my understanding of the masses of the head). Also some good news, got onto the waiting list(472.5/1000 points grade) of NCAD(Local art college) and had an interview with IADT which went well enough and they liked what they saw in the portfolio I submitted so hurrah for that. Anywho, I think that doing these studies and perhaps 2 per day would be a good idea although I'm not quite sure... Anywho here's the studies so far.

the muscle studys lookin great and i love what your doing with the apple in charcoal i definatly think you should keep drawing the shapes with value instead of line it helps espically when you are describing an object in paint

the value describes the depth and light of an object much more thats what im learning anyways keep up the fight!

Was going to do so last night except my scanner refused to co-operate with me. Luckily I scanned most of the stuff in now... albeit some loose leafs that have gone missing. That and after your last post I've been practicing in coulor a good deal more. Still working on it though.

Good news though is that my portfolio has now passed for ALL my art courses that I selected(Whoopee! *crosses fingers for animation in IADT*). So now all I have to do is focus on studying... and drawing.

P.S. That skull was done tonight. Uploaded it in the wrong place.

    study study study...

Exams in 4 days time but hey I'm out of school (nearly) so more time to update this. Passed portfolio wise for all of IADT's art courses (300/600 for animation) so hurrah for that! Now onto the studies and pics from this week. They are arranged chronologically(this time). Most of the photoshop one's I tried to limit myself to 30 minutes for.

By the way Zorcron, working in colour= good idea indeed.

P.S. - Those pencil drawings aren't that dark in real life, some lines just don't show up if I don't make it dark enough through levels.

    Exams

This is sadly all I've managed to do recently due to study and final exams this week. But it will all be over soon. I've linked the reference below for the guy, sorry if he's a bit light as I drew a little to lightly in some areas.

Updating this thing after a long hiatus from drawing due to Real Life matters, friends, socialization, one too many trip to the pub, more excuses... and a last excuse. Anyways, on with the art! Gonna be aiming for at least a few studies a day until October when I start college.

Studies from yesterday, off of Bridgman again, it's starting to help a fair bit in understanding the forms of the face. No studies or really an artwork don today as my family and I were caring for my mother after she got out of the hospital.

Two skulls, both look a bit off, gonna work on the shading through CS3. The last one I began shading but the bones are so off that I'll correct it tomorrow.

The past while has been... hectic, to say the least. College, new Mac Pro to mod and work on and new things in life. Doesn't mean I haven't put aside time for studying and drawing though.
