Looking for history of pre-production art

I am trying to do research on the subject of preproduction/previsualization and conceptual art in film. I have found very little on the subject. Specifically I am looking for info on how art deptartments and production designers operated in the Hollywood studios in the early 1900's; or anything else related to the field from the pre-digital era. I know all about the 1970-present era, special effects, etc. Looking for references and samples of maybe old storyboards, methods and techniques before the current digital age.

Any websites that cover this, books, other suggestions please!

there ya go, that's the "Screencraft: Production Design/Arti Direction" book. One of the best books I have.

Has lots and lots of information, and chapters are broken down to individual Production Designers.
Lots of cool stuff like early marker renderings for "To Kill a Mockingbird" and lots of historical movies. Very tastefull information is covered not just Orcs and Dragons.
