You're really good at drawing portraits. What don't you like about the composition of the last drawing?

It was supposed to be a rough for a bookcover illustration, but it just didn't look like a book cover to me. Plus it was a composite, which wouldn't fit with other designs for the rest of the books in the series

I think that you're too hard on yourself the faces are pretty damn awesome!

on the last sketch with the kid - the shirt could use more defining.

Right, long time no update. Basically swamped now I'm back at uni, final year!

Haven't had a chance to scan any of my pencil stuff but here's a few digital bits for now.

1st up a digital caricature of..well hopefully you can tell, done for uni

Next is a sketch for another uni assignment, I will be changing the cardinal being stood on into a fat guy for a bit more of a comedy effect. Pretty happy with the pose of the kid. I had another idea for this sketch that was a far more interesting viewpoint/perspective/whatever, but due to time I've gone with the safer option.

Then it's a thumbnail of one of the bookcovers I'm working on. Will be adding a dude on the back of the horse, and probably making the horse pose a bit more dynamic when I've had a chance to get some reference.

And last it's my shoddy attempt at a thunderdome thing that I did with mark vatsel of the sketchbook massive! As you can see, I don't work well quickly.....or without a pencil sketch.....or with robotics of any kind (yes those were intended to be cyborg things)

    Peace
    Dan

Forgot to mention about the caricature that it was for my digital manipulation module so it had to be based on photographic elements (I wasn't best pleased about that). It started out as a very very low resolution (I made sure of that) photo of the guy in question as oppose to a pencil sketch like I'd have preferred to have done. Then was caricaturized and painted using photoshop

Marian Rowling - Thanks, so do I. If I don't I'll be failing my course

jigje - who said I wasn't cool? I'm down to break more fingers people. Don't test me!

Not much today, probably not much point in posting them really but oh well.

1st is the very beginnings of part of a book cover, it's the final version of those pencil sketches on the last page. Again, probably not worth posting as I've done fuck all!

Next is an update on the pope. Still roughing in stuff. Going to make the guy on the floor fat, and add another dude in the foreground giving them a weird look. Plus details and stuff on the balcony of course. Plus some toys or something all over the floor.

Scanner access in the next few days so traditional shizz coming soon

    Peace
    Dan

Hey man good to see you're working on full pieces!

That pope piece, it looks a bit "bare": the wall, carpet and sky look pretty uniform
One way to fix that would be to shorten the width by bringing the curtains closer. (maybe make em more dark and desaturated as well?)

Another thing is that I think you're getting into the details too fast - I'd say have the entire image down with full colors straight from the start, even if they're just flat colors or blobs.
It really helps shorten the painting process and helps you achieve a better composition by seeing how the colors relate immediately. It doesn't need to look "good"

Have faith my friend! ha, but nah I know it's bare atm. That wall will be a snazzy balcony when I'm done with cool pillar things and shit. Plus will be throwing some fancy stuff on the carpet, and throwing another figure and toys and stuff in there. The sky and immediate foreground will be staying reasonably subdued though as I have to add some text to it at the end.

    Peace!

dan I'm a huge fan of drawing and your skills with a pencil are beautiful. I like that you are pushing your values that helps. I would agree with the gesture drawings, some of your figures seem a little stiff. Keep it up!

Art4All - I could probably do one or two characters, but I not much more than that, I got soo much uni work it's not even funny. Let me know what's happening with it man

Whassup people, few bits and bobs from the last week or so, was stupidly busy with a uni deadline today so forgot to bring in all my shit, so only got what was in my sketchbook scanned. Slim pickings! It's just the usual, hand warmups and head studies.

I threw in what I submitted today for uni, I fucking hate it, it's obviously not finished but I'm over it. I can focus on the more interesting projects now this one is done. Did teach me I need to work on my values and drapery a whole lot more. Plus I should be using more references. Crit it if you want but I'm not going to go back to it, plus I'm pretty sure I know everything I did wrong. Everything! ha

Aaaaaaaaand some Thunderdome sketches from the last few days, these are fun and I will be doing more. A goth one that was 60 mins and some snake thing that was 90 mins. Although the snake one is lame in terms of imagination and design, I was pretty pleased with how finished I was able to get in the short time, I normally work so fucking slowly.

Tomorrows plan is a morning of gestures and studies, I've been neglecting them recently and I'm feeling it. Also wish I could do some more life sketches if it would ever stop raining!

    Peace
    Dan

tuchten - thanks man, I love your EVERYTHING!

rogerb - gracias senior, you don't need my help, your sketchbook pages kick ass. Glad someone likes the pope image, I have grown to loathe and despise it!

This one whooped my ass today, still in progress. I'm pretty happy with where it's going but I think I'll probably start again. I wanted a much older face and the nose is garbage. It's part of one of the book covers I'm doing, so it needs to be perfect! Anyone got any suggestions for adding some age to him?

Trapped in a vicious circle at the moment, it's well fun....

Do Illustration stuff for uni, realise I still suck and want to do more studies...
But have too much work so no time for studies...
do more uni stuff, then realise I still suck and want to do more studies
But too much work so no time for studies

    etc etc.

I need to get up earlier!!

    Peace
    Dan

    hey man, looks really cool..

but if you want the light to come from underneathe make sure you lighten up his jawline :o
and light up his eyebrows from underneath aswell ..
    Atleast thats what i think..
To put some more age to him you could try to make some more hard edges around his eyes and cheeks.

And about the vicious circle.. chill out u are doing so fine already you will get better during the work you have to do.. Do studies on ur way to school or during dinner.
    You'll find the time

Keep going man ur doing great!

rogerb - You're right about the eyebrows and stuff, I did a bit more to it but I'm not happy with it so kind of just polishing a turd at this point. Think I went too dark but oh well.

My new plan with studies is to just do a shit load of prep sketches for my illustrations, will take care of the gestures I need to do if nothing else.

Update on shiz, did some more on the dude from before, think it's too dark now, but it doesn't really matter as it's not old enough and the head shape isn't what I wanted.
New guy however is going in a much better direction, looking much older and a better shape head. Need to ref the jowls a bit though. Not 100% sure if the direction of the head is suitable for the cover design, but I'm liking it so the design can fuck off for now.

Oh, and some 5-10 min warm up sketches from yesterday and today

Also, I just read my next brief and I get to illustrate a Beatles song/lyric, how good is that!? Down side is it has to be based in some way on at least 1 digital photo, but I can do as much digital painting as I want over said photograph so it's all good.

    Peace
    Dan

Oh, and I got Jason Seiler's sketching DVD the other day and it's awesome. BUY IT!

Thanks dude, the reason i left out the bright chin highlight underneath was because I was trying to draw the head looking down slightly. Which in theory means that the light illuminates more of the front planes as oppose to just the bottoms. I checked in a mirror and everything so I will fight you! haha

    Peeeeace!

Sorry for not being around too much lately,
I'm pretty busy with school, the fact that I discovered the game Fall Out 3 doesn't help.

The thunderdome sketch of the orc really made me laugh.

What beatles song are you going to choose?

    Keep it up man!

That sucks, but I spent most of yesterday in town drawing people, even made a friend. I'll be about tonight for sure, as long as there are no environments involved!

Handed in the unfinished pope thing, got a B apparently, fuck knows how.

I'm going with Eleanor Rigby for the Beatles sketch, there's a line about a woman sitting by a window and something about a face in a jar that caught my attention.

Something new, there will be a complacent and stuck up looking white Persian cat in the foreground. Think I'm going to have the dog out off focus (which also means I don't have to detail it out too much which will save me some much needed time) and probably crop it a bit to be more dramatic.

Now I'm off to be sick

    Peace
    Dan
