I think I'm going to take a break from the CHOWs and do my own thing for a while. I'm honestly irritated with it... wish I wasn't because its rather stupid to feel this way. But I just don't get it... the stuff people vote for in there. I know it doesn't mean squat in the real world, but it is starting to discourage me, that my art isn't any good. Which is bullshit and I need to stop thinking that right now. *Bad Shannon!!*

I wish there was a site like this for cartoon and comic artists. Maybe there is but I haven't found it yet... my Utopian Comic Illustrators Art site where people appreciate black outlines and non-realistic coloring and there is no Anime or Manga allowed. (Hey I can dream can't I? *grumble*)

Anyways.... here is my uber crap rough sketch for the current POW... Bugs (as History). Nothing funnier than an infamous Mobster mass murder performed by Insects. LOL!

hey at least you get votes k. your style is amazing for steam punk. so don't fret. so what if it's not realistic concept art. who ever said anything about it having to be realism in the first place, and good for you for keeping true to the style of art you love, and in fact are very good at. so there I said it. any body got a problem with that too bad!!!

Thanks Spaz.... I was having a really bad day yesterday. My "real" life is having some bad turns right now, so every little thing was bringing me to tears. I hate it when that happens, because normally I don't get upset about small things.

We are all entitled to a little mini-meltdown now and then right?

Yeah I'm trying to decide how anthro I want to make the bugs.... and if I want to change the Chicago building to look more "natural" instead of like the real buildings. I was thinking the street could be garbage made into buildings... like a cerel box building, stuff like that. Not sure what I would do with the cars... Still pondering.

DAMN RIGHT! if we need to have a mini meltdown or even a major nuclear power meltdown then we should be able to. it's worse if you bottle it up and keep it there for years. so melt away when needed, then rewind with a nice glass of sangria or other wine/beverage of choice, grab a dark chocolate bar/box if your me /tasty snack and take a nice hot bubble bath while listening to Ella Fitzgerald or other awesome relaxing music. keep the lights turned off and light a nice smelly candle. pure ecstasy

Nice work on your entries for the contests. You've got your style really down and good. It's nice that you feel so comfortable painting in it.
Really looking forward for more work from you.

Soooo...... Page One is fleshed out. I decided to go with the recycled junk instead of normal "human" buildings. I searched Ebay and found vintage 1920's product packaging for inspiration... lots of cool old tins and metal boxes.

Still thinking about the vehicle construction... though cars had soft tops in the 20's so leaves will be used for the roofs. So 1/4 of the battle is done. LOL!

I'm fairly certain this will not be done by the March 1st deadline, because I think its going to be pretty funny and I want it to be done well instead of cramming it together to make it to poll for the POW challenge.

Page 2 of my POW entry this week is done... the deadline got extended to Wednesday but I still don't know if I'll make it!!!

I completed Page 2 first because it was the most complicated... and I'm 75% done with Page 1 (doing the shading). Unfortunately Page 3 doesn't even have final line art yet. Dammit. I may have to submit it to POW with the last page unfinished...

I somewhat missed your rant up top last time I swung by, but I love your style of art , I mean, I would kneel at Akihiko Yoshida's feet if I could. He did the Vagrant Story artwork, which I adore to the stars and back.

And it even incorporates slight... "manga-isms" into it: http://www.creativeuncut.com/profile_yoshida.html

My equally favourite Japanese artist would be the awesome stylings of Tetsuya Nomura: http://www.creativeuncut.com/profile_nomura.html

Again, "manga-isms" but that doesn't subtract anything from the art. In fact, I'd stake that Final Fantasy VII's success was in part due to the nice mix of manga stylings in it.

Fact of the matter is, i'd rather come out being able to draw awesomely detailed and fresh looking things like Mr Yoshida, than "just another" digital painter.

Not that I think less of digital painters, far from it, it's a really nice medium and the results can be breath-takingly realistic.

I just think if people want to stick with a comfortable style that works, then go for it!

Heck even the squid-faced Draenei of WoW agree with such things, "Favour the road travelled by few."

There is a megaton of competition in this industry, uniqueness might just save the day in the long run

It is DONE! Go here... vote for me! LOL!

Its insane how little people pay attention to POWs. Only 17 people have voted in over a week.

    Hey!

I saw your stuff before (in CHOW) but hadn't realized you have a sketchbook. I do like your fun, colourful style a lot.

I wish there was a site like this for cartoon and comic artists. Maybe there is but I haven't found it yet... my Utopian Comic Illustrators Art site where people appreciate black outlines and non-realistic coloring and there is no Anime or Manga allowed. (Hey I can dream can't I? *grumble*)
I've been looking for a few years for such a community. Strangely, most of the comic/cartoon art forums I found seemed to have died down in 2006... I do love this site, but I also find that cartoons sorta take a back seat to 'Heavy Metal' style art. I figure I'd better draw more burly Vikings in order to network a bit and get to know other artists, which is what I was hoping for when joining.

Anyways. Hope you keep at it because I'm sure many people do enjoy your art and they *cough* deserve to see more!

    Cheers!

Thanks Sekino! Yeah I like this site a lot too... and even though I'm not interested in making Sci-Fi/Fantasy Illustration I have learned a lot and improved since I started doing those CHOWs. But yeah, sometimes I wish there were more people into cartoon and comic style art here. POW is proof we are few...

So this is what I'm up to today.... a little "Toile ode de Puss" (my craptastic attempt at French... LOL!)

Thanks! I tweaked the blue glow a bit on the final... but I think this one turned out pretty good!

So the Darth Dominatrix huh? That was just a quickie joke but I may be persuaded to make a proper illustration out of it.

Right now I've got this "Goddesses of Kitsch" idea going on... combining Greco-Roman goddesses with traditional Pin-Up girl cliches. This first rough sketch is of Eris, Goddess of Discord as the Farmer's Daughter. LOL! Maybe I should make it official and post it in the "Projects" forum....

    Thanks Kelly!

Yeah this "Lady" is actually a German Nazi Mae West. LOL! Its for the WWII Propaganda Poster CHOW.

At my work we are calling this weekend "Peaster"... since so many people I work with are Jewish and just had their Passover.
Its the new "Festivus"... (sorry, Seinfeld reference. LOL!)
