12 / 04 / 09 - a change in mentalitys, time to update the 'mission plan'
So, 4 months / 18 weeks/ 126 days or 3024 hours have passed since i
commited to developing my artistic skill set. Daaaayyyuuuum! what a
fucking journey. Theres definately been some development
...Only i kinda missed the target... instead i've been on a crazy journey of
its like, in the past 4 months i've finished laying the foundations of me, i've
filled in all the craters that growing up creates and reached the point were
i'll to go back a little and put this in context
i start making art, i enjoy making art, i work to get better at making art, i
take pride from making art - i label myself as a artist.
i feel bad - i take comfort from the fact i'm a artist (validating myself and
whatever situation ive gotten into) - i create art to re-affirm this belief - it
dosnt work (i fuck up for whatever reason, dumb hands that day) - i freak
then i become 'scared' of making art, because i need to protect my precious
label! if i keep being bad at making art, im not a artist and then what am i?
you see this is probably the main cause for all the art-block/need-
inspiratin/lost my drive threads that appear every other day
but now, ive got to a point were i'm completely self-amusing, i do what i do
because it amuses me and thats it!
and then on-top of that i've learnt that my brain only cares about survival,
its like "fuuuck dan you dont need to move, were alive right here, why
waste energy doing whatever, were perfectly fine right now" and i see that
bad emotions arnt a valid excuse to not take action
so to cut my diary entry short, i came, i saw and now its time to start
ok.. time to get this show on the road, i'll start off by ditching some old stuff and move up to the new stuff.
only got digitial camera at the moment, gonna get a scanner asap.
if you can spot any errors no matter how obvious please point them out, even if you cant offer a solution. part of fixing a problem is recognizing it..
fucked my back, scanner installed, de scummified (anything in my brothers posession seems to attract general crap, i found a bottle of old spice in the back of the printer... he's fucking 12 weres he gettin old spice?! )
so scanner installed, scanned through all the stuff in this sketchbook and done my best to get it visiable and clear but its not gone all that great, anyone got any tips on how to improve scan quality?
Keep practicing man, because of this scanner issue it's dificult to know if values were right! The best way to improve is to draw a lot from life, but i think you allready know that! Wanna see more colors in your sketchbook !! Keep it up
Thanks walid, i agree a healthy dose of practice is what i need right now i think, i'll try get the scanner issue worked out tomorow.
Also i got tomorow off from college so i hopefully can do some gouache stuff...
well i think its gouache.. its watercolour.. from a tube? is that the same as gouache.. who knows.. yea...
well todays been busy, college, hurt my back. battled with scanner to update all work, then gym, i manged to get in some thumbnails for the dsg, dinosaur mounted wrangler one, but there not worth showing and main thing spent about 30 / 40 mins on this still life. I learnt something important, when your exhausted, dont pick something because its super complex... your eyes will try to exit your body for it
so basically i didnt get past adding core shadows n highlights.. hah, well more tomorow! here you have it, winter pine cones... tadaaaa Attachment 537333
Agree with bigfootrooper, start with simple shape, it helps you to be more focus on colors and light! For the colors, I think there is not enough contrast, your shadows aren't enough dark. Try to take your time to pick colors. So keep practicing colors studies, and if you are working from photos, you could upload them , it will be useful to make better criticisms !
improved process on portraits
hone rendering a bit more, i want to get a style like i got in this (the small head at the top, only took a few minutes using a graphite holder) more consistently.
improved process on portraits
more gestures beer
hone rendering a bit more, i want to get a style like i got in
yeah! I´ll join for the beer, haha!!
no serious, It´s good that you put goals so you can work for them! helps a lot!
and you´ll be happy if you reach em!
so keep on drawing!
(cannot really comment on your stuff of today, looking good so far =)
Hey! Nice SB Only crit would be describe form with line direction more. Also, In photoshop do you have opacity and flow set to pen pressure from the tablet? If not, click F5, and selected Other Dynamics. Click the drop downs and select Pen Pressure for the both of them, it will make a big difference. If you do, I'd suggest not pressing so hard (do you?) and maybe not such saturated colours. Hope I could help. Keep rocking
Shit shit shit late! will fix the other thing later
several hours later
Coming back from my college i get a bus from the city centre, i go to the bus station and give my driver my bus card, he takes it and looks at it.. "this says holmsleyfield lane", i say "yeah this bus goes near homsley field lane", he looks at me blankly, i say "look homlsley field lane is just behind tesco.." "you cant use this to just go shopping!" if im in a city centre.. surrounded by shops, why would i misuse a bus card to go shopping at a tescos...
ok so second part of update, tried doing a portrait in bw inspired by walids value studys, went to hell.. id keep pushing with it only somehow canvas size got fucked and i was working at 100% when i normaly work at 25 ish, so here is one very bad piece.
i wont bother listing the errors, ill say simply this, its good for familiarising myself with photoshop and using a tablet
No update this friday, i've been working (in one form or another college then work) for 11 hours with no break and now im exhausted. i feel bad because i really wanted to get something done but ive just gotta accept that somedays you just cant win.. (maybe if i lay in bed with a sketchbook ill do some cool doodles that can be pushed P )
Yeah, it's a good idea to study values, it helps me a lot ! So for construction, there is no secret, practice, practice, practice, but there is a little tip ! When you construct your painting, to verify if porportions are good, you can flip horizontaly your work, and with this magic tip, all mistakes will be revealed ( try to create a shortcute for this, you will use it a lot ) For values, it seems your shadows are right, but your light are not enough lighter ! Another tip I use to construct painting is that i start by dezooming a lot my canvas, to have a kind of thumbnail, puting the background values, and then puting my shadows and highlight, you will see that it will be a lot easier to construct your basic shapes then you can zoom in to work on features, and little details ( I don't like to start by a sketch, cause I go to details to rapidly when i do that, and construction is almost always wrong ...) Anyway, keep it up, and it will comes
It looks like you are not using the opacity of your pen !
good studies. i agree with fraz. work on getting that nice line work. for the photoshop work, looks like you've got a good base, just need to blend to get a smooth transition between colors and shades. keep it up.
i finally got the stuff back from college so ill dump that now before moving onto making art today. i will work on my line quality, and as for the opacity and blending points, i do use pen pressure i just always start of using 100% for blocking in so i can make sure i pick good colours
argh, so just spent like 2 hours trying to do a still life of a bottle.. the results i wont post, there horrible, but ive learnt some shit so ill post it here so i dont forget again
alright dipshit listen up
break things down into blocks, then over time break down the blocks, dont go too detailed too early. focus on describing form.. limit yourself.. my god man this is so simple why do you keep forgetting... argh...
anyway, just dropping by to make it clear i have done work today, also add in another 15 1 min gestures
thanks fraz, i've managed to arrange it in my art class (which is horrible) so that i can study head anatomy after christmas, so i'll save it till then because at the moment i do jack shit in those lessons and to have something that will be productive will relieve so much stress.. maybe then ill stop talking to me.
so went out last night and got wasted, worked all day hungover got home and was / am sooo tired, only managed to do a few sketches nothing worthy of posting, but putting pencil to paper soothes my soul so i did it anyway
not a great update today, was working hard when i got a phone call, couple of my friends were doing a open mic night so i had to go along... alot of pretty girls out tonight... anyway i'd planned on finishing off when i got home but now im too drunk n tired.. so on with the art
ok this is gonna look shitt to you guys but it actually went well for me, the shit ass self portrait is very distracting, the individual feature studys are much more interesting.. i was focusing on identifying important planes and there graduations, and i feel i succeeded for the main part, i also tried to improve my line quality and i feel i did but i reckon you guys will still nag me.. im making 1 wavy line rather than 3.. but thats just who i am.. dont hate me for who i am!!
also chalk up another 20 i min gestures that i cba putting up because there a3 / a2 whatevers 1 size up from a4.. thatd be a3.. yeah simple
i was gonna work on a better self portrait and draw some clothes and track down a nice description for a enviro ( or write one) but time got me in the balls (as always i guess ) but i had fun and got work done so win win? i think so Attachment 541690
oh and wanted to add
thankyou to everyone who replys, i might not reply individually but i do read and i do care, im just no good at being short and sharp if you didnt notice
oh and seen as im listening to it now and im a mild state of bliss figured id share it
Hey man, you are here to improve, so it's normal to do mistakes !! Now, for a first selfportrait, I don't find it bad at all. Make sur that you have correct proportions and that you draw your features accurately before adding values. Try to see some images of eyes ( google it) and see how it works, whata are main shapes, etc ... with observation you will improve a lot ! Keep it up !
Cool, but your line quality can still be improved, although it is getting better.
The biggest tip I can give, is to look or imagine what you are going to draw and analyse it. Look at the angle it is at, if it will be seen, what it links in to, the shape, where it starts and ends. Everything about the line. Then imagine it on your paper, and in one fairly dark line, commit to it. Don't think that is wrong, just go nuts. It is all about confidence. Maybe try drawing some boxes or circles, and just concentrate on getting the lines really clean and in one swift motion.
Keep it up.
