    P.O.W.! Challenge 18--I AM?

    P.O.W.! Challenge 18
Revised Deadline: Sunday, January 18, 2009, 11:59 pm anywhere in the world.

    Topic: I AM?

Let's try something just a little bit different this time out. The end of one year and the beginning of a new one is usually a time for retrospection and introspection. So, let's go with that thought...

The title of this Challenge is "I am?"

We're going to do a comic as usual, from a minimum of TWO pages to maybe 10 or more if you really think you can do it, that defines how you see yourself, or how you think or would like others to see you. Think of it as a sort of "Maybe it's a self portrait--if you squint just right..." It can be a complete fantasy. However you wish, you're going to define yourselves, and what makes you you.

You can do this in the first person, or the third. As a straight story or a collage of imagery. You can get as truthful and personal as you wish, tell a fairie tale, or lie through your teeth. Whatever floats your boat. Heeheehee...

It technically doesn't have to make sense in the traditional sense of one panel leading to another if you wish. In fact, it doesn't even have to have a single panel in it. It can consist of all full page images, or a mixture of panels and full page in any fashion you wish, or even one long continuous image cut into sections to make the pages. The text, if there is any, can be treated as you wish--balloons, sidebar, or as random thoughts/comments.

As usual, black and white or color as you wish, in any medium. The time is also extended for this to get around the holidays, so you have a good bit of extra time. just don't wait til the last minute.

    Standard Comic Book Size:

    --Trim size: 6 5/8" x 10 1/4"
    --Live art area: 6" x 9"
    --Bleed size before trimming: 6 7/8" x 10 1/2" (1/8" in all directions)

This thread will be the place you ask questions on this challenge, trash talk, post WIPs and post your final art. See the READ THIS FIRST thread for all specs.

    Good luck.

P.O.W.! Challenge 19 will be posted before Sunday Midnight, January 4, 2009, and will be a special project with the setting and some of the dialogue pre-determined for you.

    ************************************************** ***

A little note here for all of you who have supported the P.O.W.! Challenges...thankyewthankyewthankyew...

Just a reminder--those of you who didn't get a chance to finish exactly the way you wanted to, or ran into deadline problems, remember there is a sticky section where you can post your stuff when you do get it up to speed.

Sunbeam, you're 0 for 0, so how about embarrassing yourself this time out. I'm gonna try, too, ...one legged, wallpapering, and cooking for Christmas the whole time...

Hmmm!! Even if I can't finish it anytime soon (I'm heading on vacation from the 13th to the 30th), I thought of some ideas for this POW! Would be good to use my experiences this year...in some nifty way. @_@ I'm sure I could think of a cool way to say "I am VERY VERY FREAKIN' COLD!!!" when I was in Norther Alberta. LOL!

this is a small transcript/thing I have written down but my visual ideas keep developing at the rates of knots. Should keep it simple really, like the 'not our kind' I think I have drastically over thought this one.
    .................................................. ...........................

    Who are you?

    - Who ‘am’ I? … Who am ‘I’? …
    - hhhmmmmm whom… (small type)

    - I ‘am’ only so, after comparison with your own definition, therefore in relation to you exist as ‘I’.

    What…

    - I don’t know ‘what’ I am, perhaps you could say, that ‘what’ I am would be perception… theoretically.

    I am bored…

    - ‘I am’ could mean ‘who’ I am AND ‘what’ ‘I am’ simultaneously.
    - ‘I am’ a genius, what.
    - ‘I am’ the conception of perception!

    Now I am confused.

    - That’s because ‘I am’ a genius! ‘Who’, ‘I am’ is ‘I’ and not therefore you, which means that ‘what’ ‘I am’ is therefore comparatively not you. You are therefore, are not a genius. In turn, my perception of a genius is ‘I’ and only relates to the conception of ‘I’ as ‘I am’. Through perception ‘I’ can label myself as ‘I am’.
Perception is self evident, ‘I am’ because ‘I’ think ‘I am’ therefore ‘I am’ even theoretically! I can create my label as a reflection of my…
    - GENIUS!

    Good

    … I have a label…

    - You have a label?

    Huh…

    - This means that my label is purely a mask
    - If you had a label before ‘I’ perceived my conception of ‘I’ then that negates my basis that ‘I’ is ‘who’ or ‘what’ ‘I am’

    Huh, do tell…

    - ‘I’, ‘I am’ & ‘am’ only relate to perceptions, they are concepts with out basis in reality. Artificial.

    Like computers?

    - The notion of ‘I am’ is artificial, created to answer, ‘who’, based in conceptual intelligence. Yes, artifical because it does not relate to reality.

So, like I said, like computers…

    - If that’s your conception, why not, but it still doesn’t relate to reality as it is an artificial connection to reality…. Blah blah blah, blah blah ‘I’ blah blah ‘I am’ blah blah blah artificial intelligence blah.

    FRANK – FRANK –

    JESUS CHRIST FRANK

I’m telling you Doc, they were both right there, two little pink puffy humanoids talking about what …

    It is too…

Let me stop you there Franklin, in my opinion, and this is only how I perceive the situation but

God dammit Frank turn the page.

I am whatever is at the bottom after over 60 years of compost is cleared away. It may not look all that good, but it IS nice to be there...

That makes me want to kick off into some Stone Temple Pilot lyrics...

"I am smellin' like a rose that somebody gave me on my birthday death bed.

I am smellin' like a rose that somebody gave me 'cause I'm dead and bloated"

    ...head banging ensues...

Merry Christmas to all. Looking back through my records from last year, I realized we had a lot of trouble with entries over the holidays because of travel (which is really bad this year in the US because of weather), school and family get-togethers, so I'm going to try to solve that problem a bit by extending the deadline by one week. It's now...

    Thanks Alj...

I was begining to wonder how I could fit it in to my busy unemployed schedule...you know the TV isn't going to just sit on the couch and watch itself.

    oh...and Merry Christmas!

Tomorrow, you will be hit by a bus that smells like eel soup. The driver only asked me for $12.73 US and an old copy of Playboy (May, 1983)...

Hope you and your crew are having a nice christmas ...

I got the rest of that page and half of the next penciled during my little hiatus. Somebody else post something pretty quick or this will become my second sketchbook thread.

Here is the bottom half of page 1. I'll repost page 1 as a complete page later after I get a reduced photocopy down at Kinko's. I still don't have a large format scanner. Sorry about cropping & resolution. I'm still figuring out the software on the new letter/legal scanner I bought so I could scan multipage court docs as pdf files for online filing.
