Progress on the John Carter painting. I almost completely redid him today. Last night I was on the point of scrapping this completely, but I finally realized that it wasn't working because I'd screwed up the drawing of him really badly. Crisis averted.

    liquorbleu: Thanks .

Finished the portrait of my parents and probably done with the John Carter painting. If I think of anything else before we head to Kashmir on the 25th I'll post an update.

    Satupeikko and prsnsweeney, thanks!

I turned the fishing dragons concept into a finished piece. Also, some more concept art, this time more production-oriented.

A portrait of my grandad, and a digital study of a kukri.

I also put in a closeup of the portrait. This one was definitely a step forward for me. For quite a long time I've been wrestling with trying to relearn painting flesh naturalistically, which means the values need to be really constrained under normal light. In school we were encouraged to push the drama and really pull out highlights and deepen shadows, which is a good thing to know how to do, but I want more tools under my belt. Watching videos of Sean Cheetham painting helped a bit. He works his light areas from midtone to highlight, but in the process it looks like very little value change is happening from stroke to stroke.

tl:dr - my flesh painting got better .

Edit: Also note that I'm way too happy with that trick of scraping paint off and letting the canvas show through...

Damn, dude. These are seriously sick!

Only comment I would make is on the painting of the guy shooting the gun (primarily red). The foreshortening and/or the perspective is making something in the proportions look off. His extended arm, his waist, and the other arm just look... off (for lack of a better word). Just an observation.

Looking good, though, man. Thanks for sharing!
