@ pixie: not sure what you mean with first try, second time. I could refine the sketch a little? I'm gonna try a longer study with this thing. though study might be the wrong word. drawing from the heart. kyoto was fun to draw ^^

@Fitz: auch. thanks for those basic painting rules. ;p I kind of liked that cat drawing. well, giving painter a swirl again. photoshop is easier to understand. but it doesnt smudge right. also, version I got wont let you turn the canvas.
I know paper is better. but im trying to learn digital.

first version of something I want to spend some real time on:

Woooow thank you for the mini anim on post 177!!!!!!!!!
Now I'm really imagining the future movie. Red is super funny.
I have no superconstructive crit for the moment, my mind's simply not at critting.
But I'm happy you're going forward with the project. I know how hard it is to manage so big a thing with only two hands, but you're doing great.
I'll come back for a more serious reading of the storyboard and the rest.
The Rubens like guys are vibrant, and definitely your style, not Rubens', because they are electric.

And here's pretty much the other thing I made this week. a self-portrait.
I spent several mornings on it.. waiting for the others to get up to gear :p.
might be 4-5 hours in there in total. needed a lot of time to get the brushes workable though.

    Yay longer pieces! Woo hoo.

It whould be nice to see some Tonal studies, Exploring tones in paint. Tones are very important for creating form yes wut wut. Also explore different way of making consistent soft and hard edges. I use the colour picker in photo shop and light pressure to make mine. I know however this may not work in painter.

Hey ashess thanks for stopping by my sb

Your color studies are looking good and so are your figures. I suggest you keep on learning proportions, something i am bad with as well
Keep it going aite? Will drop by again soon

Nice studies and all.. I agree about the proportions

Maybe try and meassure things a little more. The self portrait in particular looks like it could be improved quite a bit if you checked so that everything in it matched what you see more But I think that's mostly about practice anyway

    Keep posting

you do some lovely things! really like the wip in #187, but his torso is very long. shorten it and pay close attention to the way muscles on one side contort and compress when they are being stretched on the other. his arms are looking pretty lengthy too, but your muscle definition looks good keep it up

hey, thanks for stopping by all!
Fitzin: yup; trying to do some lengthier stuff. usually means do 1 hour and continue later; but that's getting easier. gonna try and do greyscale for my wip now; should make tones easier.
shamandalie: thank you too ^^. not too sure which proportions you mean though.
tobbA: I'm checking the portrait, but don't really see that much wrong with it proportionwise. face is a little skewed, but I meant to do that do show the force of resting on the hand.
gutss: thanks, made the torso a bit shorter.
Nettle_Mnt: true. I should probably not start with white paper.

Sorry I let you down for so long - my visual mind has been kind of shut down, a horrible feeling...
I like the direction you're heading for with your fauvism(?) experiments, but you're not quite arrived yet, they need more consistency or harmony I think.
Same with anatomy, I do dig the deformations you're making, but they need more harmony, more flow.
Something should pop and break free. You're on the path for it I bet. Although I guess the baby is disturbing you a lil bit
In the eye study just above, you didn't quite match the values on the eyeball and the upper skin areas, care to do it again?

Hi Leo; thanks for posting! I dont feel like I'm getting anywhere with drawing lately, but I'll just keep going regardless.
last time I got like that a year later I looked back and noticed I had actually progressed. hearing you say I'm at a breakthrough is definitely motivating ^^.
Anyway, cant really blame the baby. still 2 months to go, and he's not that much of a kicker usually.
ye the eye sucks; shapes are off too. maybe I'll do some new ones indeed.
hope you get outtof that dry spot soon; try doing something fun. that helps 4 me ^^

DStrax: thanks my guy is a good model when he sleeps ^^

anyway, update to the caroselle. fixed the arms a bit. worked on color/light. think I'm @ around 8 hours with this piece now. gonna keep track.

    Heya!

I think that last one looks pretty good. But what I think it needs is more balance. If you look at it now it's almost as if he will fall backwards. Try to think about where you have the centre of gravity in your figures.

(and it seems I missed subscribing to your thread even though I thought i did so I haven't noticed your updates, sorry bout that )

You should work on your drawings before thinking of colors.

^^ hi TobbA. no problems mate, that happens. gonna think about the balance thing. but I did want to have him dynamically poised; like he is moving. as of shocked by the little teddy he's holding.. maybe falling backwards is the best thing for that.
maeshanne: ye I think colors need a bit of work now.. not sure how to go about it.
Dynamike: well I did.. gonna havta do some colors at some point right?

some horse sketches on my tablet.. wanted to do longer pieces actually. but the sun was shining so hard I could hardly see what I was doing; let alone tell what color I was using. wish my tablet had a backlight. that might have helped..

Those are healthy horses. I guess they don't stay still for long and you have to hurry to sketch them. Good job!

I tried a quick paintover trying to add more drama to the caroussel guy. I've pretty much demolished the drawing and colors but it's just to give and idea of the luminosities and values that I imagine in my head, hoping it can help you with the lighting.

    Looking good

But I think you have too many unruly flat dark values in it

Some are also a bit muddy. If you kept the black to a minimum I think it'd look a lot better
