Hey. I like the POW. The story reads pretty well. While looking at your sketches however, I see that you don't construct your figures very carefully. I'd suggest building them up with simple geometric shapes to begin with, and then add the details later. They'll have a lot more substance this way and seem more believable.

I'm loving your comics, it's always really refreshing to me to see comics or storylines on here
Keep up those studies! I know sometimes it feels like you are struggling through it and not getting what you want but just really try to put yourself into it. Sometimes I'm surprised when I keep pushing and pushing and suddenly I realize something that helps me turn it into a better study.
I know there's a lot of emphasis goin around about doing speed studies and stuff but I think it's really valuable to really commit to one too.

`@ kuquorblue -hey, thanks! there's a lot to study isnt there.. I should make a list.
one good thing about the challenge thing is, I run into all sorts of stuff I dont usually do that gives me a lot of trouble.
I should do studies into those areas I think.
and heh, ye I seem to have a bit of a commitment problem. that's why I decided to do some challenges really. to force myself to finish something.
@tobbA- hey! long time no see! ye I think I see what you mean. I do some geomitry in the shots I have trouble with.. but the others could use some too.
@plissken - heh im pretty happy with some of those shots ye; thanks your sweet your totally right about the ball..it's hardly part of the exercise to draw circles.. I hope!

june will be 5 years of sb...

anyway, I thought this might be a good time for some of that in-tro-spec-tion thing and see what I've learned.
firstly, gonna look at no-ref digital art (concept):
well, my main problem seems to be light and values, indeed. I've gotten quite a bit better at showing light, but I really should put some study into that. the hope-giving thing is that the progress I've made is over a relative short amount of time- and then I 'quit' for a while, not doing any concept stuff digitally.
my biggest hiatus seems to be cause by study. I'm going to start up in may again. maybe this time around a can find a better balance.

I want to bodyworlds expo in amsterdam with Kapri and Anthis today.
I better start writing down what I learned before I forget..
first up the elbow. drawing 1 is seen from up front, with the palm facing us. (this is the right arm)
the detail is the same elbow from the back. as you can see, the upper bone arm makes up the whole back of the joint, but the lower arm-bone leading to the back of the hand / the thumb has a pretty wide area where it locks to the upper arm bone. this bone has protrusions both on the inside and the outside of the joint.
another interesting note is that the bigger of the 2 bones of the lower arm, which I thought simply led to the tumb side, more leads to the back of the hand-side. the smaller of the lower arm bones does lead to the pinky.
the 2nd picture is of a left arm, lift forward; towards us in the front view.
3rd pic is the pelvis. what I noticed is the upper leg bones grab in very wide. but the big leg muscles start from other points; either from the top of the hips, or from the inside point of the pelvis.
pic 4 shows the circular nature of the pelvis, consisting of a circle to hold the entrails in the middle, and 2 circles, each for the but muscles to hang from.
pic5 shows the backbone, tilting at the end when etering the pelvis area.
pic6 is about the knee, the little slate lying loose in a little bag over the joint to protect it. the big front upper leg muscles, ending under the knee slate, dig deep into the (..lies?) of the pelvis on the other side.
pic 7 shows a detail of the elbow joint, and the knee, sideways and from behind. notice the 2 muscles from the back of the upper leg dividing and grabbing on th 1 of the lower leg bones both. also notice how big and protruding the heelbone is! ( lower leg is shortened so this could be showed.)
pic8 is about the shoulder and the nek. notice how the rib cage changes into the neck gradually.
pic 9 is a diagonal through the leg, and a knee from 3/4 behind!
pic10 is a hand and a foot. notice again the way the 2 leg/respectively arm bones attach to the hand/foot.
11 & 12 is mucles for the torso, front & back.
13 is a horse's ancle join, 14 the 'knees', a front hoove and an 'elbow'.
14 is embrios.
15 is a pelvis and necks from a top fiew and one looking up (watch the (slokdarm) and the jaw in relation to the (sleutelbeen), which we are still somewhat looking down on.
16 is a hand and shoulders in different positions.

so, started on material studies. trying to keep these down to 15 min a piece. also, it's more important I think to get the feel right then exactly copy. I added a greyscale as a checkup if I got the values right. still, I did the color picking for the 2nd before starting the 15 min. it mighta taken like 10 too...

so this is a rework of a drawing from 5p for the comic, with basic geometry put in. I used to love drawing geomitry. in school. ahah! now I guess I cant be bothered with it anymore.

Hello my dear. First of all, I would like to wish you
a happy new year and a pleasant Christmas evening,
and then I would share some thoughts with you about
your latest art.
I love the comic, I like how she is high kicking people around,
and I just fancy the way how she lift her legs and her
underwear is visible. A very nice refreshment to the brain,
I think that you have managed to tell the right story there.
The inspector is a real bad blooded bloke. I would still like
to see more details put in some of the pictures.
In-tro-spec-tion paintings are sweet, I always like to
see older pieces from artists, and how they improved,
and I have to say that you have improved for sure.
I am more than proud, and you should be proud yourself.
My favorites are the painting from dec2007 and the SHOE
one from jan2008.
The anatomy studies are looking very hot, and I bet that
you have learned a lot by drawing, studying them. It's very
good to write down your thoughts beside your drawings,
just as you did. Fantastic work. Maybe one day you will
publish your own anatomy book for artists?
The material study post is a bit confusing for me. I would
definitely not advice to take such complex materials to study.
I think that the references that you have chosen would be hard
to render even for the best artists in the world. Those rocky
kind of things will be hardly achieved by some brush itself,
you will definitely have to use some textures along the way if
you want a more realistic effect. The bottom line is that I think
that you took a too hard task, too early on. Maybe you
should try to render some less complex things for material study.
Using geometrical shapes for your characters will definitely help
you to draw them more accurately and will help you to put them
in perspective more effectively. You are on the right track, you
just practice more and more.
Well, I think that I did not said anything new or smart, but I
hope that my humble opinion and encouragement helps you
a bit on your further travel and road to happiness.

You might be over reliant on layers. Try drawing on only one. It's hard, but it makes you think a lot more as to how the main object/character fit's in with their background. The studies of your kids were cute, but you need to focus on the negative shapes even on the face to create that form. A huge improvement from the first pages.

Hi. I think your studies are looking good. But my advice remains the same. Spend some more time on a few studies. Maybe have one that you return to over a few days. Just work in values/pencil. Try to get the transitions, rendering and value differences right. I think doing this will help you improve a lot.

Thanks very much for the SB visit, it was much appreciated and sorry its taken me so long to get back to you but I have been going through yours. I loved the pictures of the Kids, I have some as well and the drawing and painting keeps me sane (if you can call me that !). You have a good sense of anatomy and more importantly a natural flair for gesture too ..... i'm just jealous as hell and so I'm leaving now, ok! (ha ha ha)

yesyes, still pumped up; I guess I should one of these tone studies for a few consec days. maybe I can do this tree for a few days. depends if I get to draw around the same time as today. else ill have to do a photo instead ^^
@ plissken- yes I had a lot of fun doing the comic ill do one again somewhere in the future, but right now I'm pumped to get this stuff sorted.
value and color studies for me; then on to awesomeness. about the value studies: looking at it again, I think you're quite right! I'm rectifying it by doing the easy ones first.
im not too displeased with my progress either; espec as I though I wouldnt have gained anything in the analogue field, but im starting to think I did. need to do a look-over post for that one too before I'm sure though.
im not sure anything new is ever said, but it seemed smart to me. is it christmass already though? I'll get the blowtorch out!
@Blackspot- do you know, I never though of layer like that. just an easy way to keep things from running through eachother. I did the tree like you suggested. and will watch my negative shapes more ^^
@ tobbA- hi nice to see you back man! well, I did do about 20 hour on the sea king. but I guess you mean studies huh?
@Lightship -haha thanks man! nice to see you here. ye, drawing the kids is just so much fun! sometimes I wish they'd give me a lil more time though. they just cant keep still!
