    Female Portrait's

Here are a few female portrait sketches/WIP's. I don't want to have one way of drawing the female face, so I'm trying to make them all look different.
Later on I'll try to draw the same face with different expressions.
    1. WIP I started working on yesterday. playing around with patterns to make it less boring.
    2. Color study of this painting by William Whitaker.
3.I had this sketch on my hard drive since June but never posted it.
    4. I did this one in late August. I like how the upper one turned out, I think I'll continue painting digitally.
    Critique would be nice.

...I draw females way to much, got to start practicing other stuff like enviros...some other day

honestly...you are awsome!!! how do you learn this? I find the face (mostly female) so hard to draw. Did you learn from some tutorial?

kyubisharingan Thank you! Lots of practice. The face is hard to draw, I have a bunch of face sketches I don't show because they look horrible lol. Andrew Loomis has a book called "Drawing the head and hands", you should check it out. Also drawing self portraits help too.

    Something different for tonight

Yo rustveld, great improvement in your drawings since first post,
i really like your girls, maybe you could try some different origins in your faces
if you want to make them different, some asians, african, peruvian etc..
and/or stylise them a little while keeping your vision of beauty,
anyway, the eye study is great too, keep on sharing!

That last one of the rat was just a bit blurry, but on the whole I think you're really on the right track. Your digital work is definitely improving rapidly, and I can tell you're doing plenty of studying. your traditional work, however, seems like it could use some work. I strongly encourage you to work simultaneously on improving both, neither more than the other, since the things you learn from either are invaluable to the other. IF you focus on only one, you end up lopsided like me, with a handicap to overcome on the other.

    Keep working! This is impressive!

Hey bouroune, Thanks man, it's always nice to hear that people see improvement. I'm definitely going to try out some different origins like you suggested, I know I have some lying around, but I'll have to do more.
I'm glad someone noticed the eye, thanks again!

radioblur I see what you mean about the mouse, I did have a sharper version but decided to stay with the blurry one. Thanks for the great advice, I noticed too that my traditional work hasn't been improving as much as I would like. It's like you say, I usually only focus on one and end up lopsided. Right now I've really been into working traditionally and I'm not as comfortable working digitally anymore. Working simultaneously is a good idea, but I usually get obsessed with one thing and forget the other.

    I will and thanks!
    ----
I'm really bad at this updating thing... got used to lurking again, but I'm still drawing almost everyday.

I've really been into pencils these past weeks. I'm really trying to push my faces and expressions. I also found some sketches I forgot about. The first 3 sketches are the latest from last and this week. The other 2 are from August I think (I should really start putting dates on these stuff) . The last one is from way back, character concepts for Team Chow 1 that we never finished.

If it's not too much trouble I'd like to ask what if their faces tell you anything?
    Critique would be nice too!

Hi Rustveld; nice sketchbook! Your still-lives are good (foremost those from #10 and #41- it's a pity you did not work out the one with the hand!) The characters you draw and their anatomy are awesome; I especially like the girls - very sexy!

First pretty neutral. Maybe little playful with those half closed eyes.
    Second pretty neutral.
Third is happy. Wide open eyes.
    Fourth is neutral, distanced, cold.

Critique: Hmm... Yeah... I've got nothing. =P

Can you please upload your pencil rendering skillz somewhere? Zipped maybe.

AWESOME pencil drawing a few posts up! And confident drawing in general. It seems that on some, you're more focused on the effect of the light, while in others you're more focused on meticulous drawing and details. Is that correct? If so, which do you prefer?

    ---

ImaGEEnation- Thanks man, you're too kind!
jatherip- Thank you! Yes I definitely need to work on my anatomy, I need more than some polish really.
blexano- Hey, I'm glad you like it!
engelhardt- Thank you! I need to do more still lives, haven't done that in a while. I'm glad you like them!
paran0id- Thank for answering my question, haha lot's of neutrals,I guess I need to keep working on my expressions!
It took me a while to get that your were kidding lol, I was still very sleepy when I woke up.
    Mischeviouslittleelf- Thanks man!
mariusz Thanks! The real thing is even cuter, especially when it's stealing food.
MarcoBucci Thank you! to be honest I never really thought about it. If I look back at my last post, I would say I prefer a combination of both, like in the first drawing. But it depends on the paper I'm using. If I can't get crisp lines, I smudge it and use a kneaded eraser to focus on the light like I did in the second and third picture instead.

Cool Chow, now that I see the idea behind it. Unfortunately, it didn't come across that she is standing in a slight perspective. Sometimes it helps to slightly fade out the parts that are in perspective.
    Cheers,

    Colored Pencils

It sure has been a while !
I haven't posted in more than a month... Haven't been too happy with my drawings, at some point I really thought I'd forgotten how to physically and mentally draw. My drawings started to look more like symbols, I couldn't visualize the subject matter.
You don't get better by doing nothing, so I did some much needed anatomy studies. It took a while to get warmed up but I think I'm back on track.

Looking back October wasn't a total waste. After a shower I started drawing on my shoulders (which was still wet) with some colored pencil that I've had for years and figured out that the waxy colored pencils are also water colored pencils XD go figure... so I've been having fun with those as you can see.
I told my mother not to throw away carton from cereal boxes and the like ... and she gave me an always liner box lol...they are actually really nice to color on.

1,2. The first two are some eyes from imagination. All the images you see are approximately the same size in real life.
    3. Study of a shell I found when I went biking and snorkeling at 5 am (I should really continue doing that, nice workout and I see a lot of inspiring stuff on the way) also a life study of a glass ball (couldn't get the vibrant turquoise light with the pencils) and some random fish.
    4.Girl from imagination
    5. It's supposed to be a glass life study, I couldn't choose an easier flat glass for starters, no I had to do a more difficult triangular embossed glass...as if glass isn't difficult enough to draw, I'll know better next time.
    5. My version of http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_PB-O1yT5EY..._schomburg.jpg and her ugly twin, check out http://goldenagecomicbookstories.blogspot.com/ when you have a chance, major inspiration!
    6. Self portrait, was a little too late with if for Nov 1st Self Portrait DAY
    7. *edit* found more eyes. Bottom ones are newer, upper right was my attempt at watercolors.

*damn it, need to manage attachments again!*

Chupacabra Thank you. You're right about the perspective. I think it was ok in the beginning, but when I rendered the shoes I changed it, don't know why.

    latigid Thank you, I will
My57 Thank you, I could draw eyes all day long, mostly when I'm bored.
    I'll be doing that.

I've been going through tons of older '08-09 sketches that I never posted, there's quite a lot, don't know why I never posted them...probably procrastination and laziness. It's going to take a while to scan and resize them all, but here are a few anatomy, character & costume, chow sketches and Adriana Lima as Wonder Woman (not enough Adriana in my SB!) and a creature I started working on this week.

    It has been a really long time, almost a whole year since I last updated. I'll explain why;

Last year around mid-November something strange started to happen. I was really happy and extremely creative; ideas were storming through my head non stop. I spend days with little to no sleep just drawing. I had a lot of energy and basically I felt good. You might ask what's wrong with that, I myself didn't think anything of it. I was drawing like crazy and insomnia wasn't something new to me. Unbeknownst to me it was a sign of things to come. I was going through a period of hypomania which later turned to mania. It is pretty difficult to explain what I went through in my manic episode, but basically I felt every emotion imaginable in the same day. It was my highest high and my lowest low. But hey, at least I didn't cut off my ear.

Things seemed to be fine after treatment, but I stopped taking lithium when I felt better and went through another but much milder manic episode. I was given a lot more medication after that and I became a "zombie".

Needless to say I wasn't doing much drawing after that. It bothered me immensely that I couldn't draw like I used to. My hand wasn't working like it used to and I was extremely out of practice. I complained to my Doctor and he agreed to lower my Lithium doses. So we slowly started lowering my doses until I felt comfortable drawing again. November I started feeling like my old self again.

I want to end 2010 on a good note, so I'm posting some older sketches so I can start 2011 fresh.

I'll start with a drawing I made after the first episode.
    The rest are older 2008-2009

andres333- Thank you! I disagree though. Your anatomy studies are awesome!
paperX-Thanks man. I'm never on msn though. Didn't mean to give you the cold shoulder or anything. You're on Facebook right?
