Lots of Painter 5, 6, and 7 tutorials on my PixelAlley site (URL below my signature), some of which may be helpful. Click the top left link to go to the Tutorials section and you'll find some basic tutorials on using the Pen tool and working with Shapes.
Also, at TutorAlley Forums (URL below my signature), we have a lot of tutorials both in our Tip o' the Day forum and scattered throughout the other forum threads, in response to member questions. Many of them address Painter 8 topics.
I'll be teaching Painter 8 classes in the near future as well, if you're interested.

Oval Selection tool

Quick Curve tool
The Shape editing tools are:
Shape Selection tool
Add Point tool
Remove Point tool
Convert Point tool
Using the Pen tool, we can make very precise selections (Shapes converted to selections).
Once a selection is saved, it becomes an Alpha channel and appears in the Channels palette list (Select > Save Selection).
We can also create a Layer Mask based on Layer Transparency (Layers > Create Layer Mask from Transparency, then load the Layer Mask as a selection.
Read more about Layer Masks and Selections in the Painter 8 User Guide. In the Index, look up:
