Best way to blend colors effectively?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I've been trying to draw some octopus tentacle-like things for the past 15 minutes, and I don't think I'm getting it right. It's look pretty flat. What's going on with my blending? I'm just using a default brush with pressure sensitivity.

I'm not the best at blending, but what works sometimes for me is using the eyedropper tool to select the two adjacent colors, lightly brush down diagonally into one color, tap the x key on my keyboard to the 2nd color and lightly brush into the opposite color. I usually have my opacity set at around 60 and jitter at 40.

It's tedious, but I've had some happy accidents using that method. If i get frustrated I'll switch to the smudge tool (using a soft brush) and blend it that way. I try not to rely too heavy on the smudge tool because I can easily go overboard. Hope i explained this good enough. There are some good digital painting threads in the fine arts/studies section in the artworks thread.

Hope it works out 7 keep painting!
