    From doodles to studies

Hey CA, ive been lurking around these forums for over a year now and finally have decided to get serious about study.

This first paint was done in 8/09. I needed a better thumbnail. Everything after this first post was where I was at with my art before my first semester at the university here.

    Thanks for stopping by
    J

    From todays studies

A self portrait and of my youngest son.

I butchered my left eye, the more i erased the worse it got. My biggest problems seem to be perspective and shading in (value?)

Not much time today... when i started the pairs of eyes i was going so slow trying for accuracy with each line lots of erasing. The result was horrible. The single eyes were quick, and i was happier with those.

    hey! :-)
I think you´ve got some really nice studies!
And your son is just cute!! :-D
Keep on practising and for your problem with shading...I think I share your problem... -.-;; I also try to figure out how it works...but well... with enough practise and time we will also get to be as good as all the other great artists here at ca!

Hey, nice to hear that you feel like picking up your pencils again. Your sketchbook looks really interesting. The superheroes got some greats poses and some of the arm foreshortenings are just dead on.

However on your portraits you seem to be a bit to found of using lines to express everything. If you try to look for blocks of shadows instead of lines and watch how they make the sphere form pop out and push back I think you'll get a greater depth to the picture. It's kind of hard to explain what I mean... but it's sort of letting go of the idea that you have to draw a line around the whole white part of the eye and instead watch where the upper eyelid casts as shadow over the sclera, and where that shadow is the darkest and then go over all aspects of the face in that way. I hope this ramblings are at least slightly understandable for you.

a good way to approach getting better at shading is to wire frame out what you're drawing. you may have to actually grid out your object/person that you are drawing at first, but eventually your eyes will be trained to see a grid for you.
when you begin, you have to figured out your lighting. then have ur drawing gridded out. then all you need to do with the grid is to shade in the direction of the grid. and just cross hatch according to the grid.
if non of what i just wrote made any sense email me, and i'll send u an example.

Allot going on these days...The time i can sit down and focus is scarce.
I cant seem to get my hands to do what my mind is seeing. Im now trying to draw with both hands which is fun

Contours for now, bad proportions as usual.

I'm not much of a critic but I think I can see improvement in the last SP.
The chin is not in the same line as the face though and I think you could push the darker shadows even more. The last piece with the faces looks promising allready but I can see some of the facial features are also not in line. The bearded man has lot of character though.

Good studies here nontheless, keep on practising.

Turning this in Monday. we were supposed to do an abstract of a natural disaster. I struggled a lot with thinking in abstract. The rough was probably closer to abstract than the final

    first is graphite/fine liner
second and third are my first attempts at a project in illustrator.

after that warm up and a lot of you tube i tried again with some better colors.

I need to take them further i guess but i seem to be overworking some areas.

Still this was a lot of fun. I also painted one with acrylics using split complimentary colors which was not as fun
