    Edit>Preferences>Palettes and UI

If you mean the color of the background of the document/Painter Interface.

Well...put your painting on a separate layer, make a layer above the canvas and paint it black.

Galaxis, you really ought to be more specific. Arshes thinks you mean one thing, I another.

I was at first presuming the canvas color, but since Galaxis said "grey" it is more likely it's the interface since by default it's a grey color. Galaxis also said "not canvas" so I'm going with the document window by the two clues given.

    Hi folks,

It's the image window background color that's changed using Preferences > Palettes and UI. To clarify, when you click and drag the lower right corner of the image window to enlarge it, the image window background is visible and it's not part of the image but is the area around and in back of the Canvas.

In the Palettes and UI Preferences dialog box, this is referred to as "Window background".

To change the image window background color:

    1. In Palettes and UI Preferences, click the right button named Custom Color at the bottom of the dialog box.

    2. Choose the color you want, then click the OK button twice, once to exit the Color Picker dialog box, then to exit the Palettes and UI Preferences dialog box.

If you ever want to change the Canvas Paper Color, read this tutorial to learn how to change the Canvas Paper color and expose the new Canvas Paper color on the entire Canvas, or in selected areas of the Canvas:

Please do not PM me with Painter questions. Instead, post them here where everyone can benefit from them. Thanks!
