Hey Lav, nice piece! I would recommend a read through this site at least once...http://www.huevaluechroma.com/ a lot of it is really dry, but there are some really important sections like this on the principles of color for painters: http://www.huevaluechroma.com/101.php. Color has always been one of my weaknesses If all else fails, you can always find a photo, or another work of art and copy that palette in your own piece. That's probably the easiest way because you can already see the colors together and the effect/mood that they have. There are a million little rules of thumb for color that I've accumulated over the years, If you want to know a few just pm me and I'll try to remember them Hope that helps! Oh yeah, check out this tutorial, it's really helps you understand how color works in the digital realm. http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...38#post2097738

Thanks for the tips everyone, and Dark Eyes I'm def gonna inspect that article and do more studies about it soon, for now i feel like i just want to redo the entire portrait, the linedrawing itself looks a bit too clean and "nice". I also looked at the colours from another computer and amagaaawd it made my eyes hurt >.<

Anyways, let's forget that monstrosity and look at some sketches!

I like the portrait and the one of Death riding a motorcycle in the last post.
For your question about color since you said you like flat colors maybe you should take a look at mucha's posters designs. I think that style of coloring would really suit your drawing style!

@LtPlissken, Thanks, I saw an old western photo in a magazine which inspired me, maybe it's not a bad idea to watch some good ol' western movies again and get inspired, the both of us!

    @Voodoo Mama, thanks, that's a great suggestion!

@NickyBeats, here's more coming your waaayaaaaarrgh!

Never was a fan of the western movies, I do not know
why, they just never attracted me. However I think that
I watched 'Once upon a time in the West' once. That
was a good one. When we are talking about coffins,
I am more up for the Zombie stuff.
Anyway, it's good that you are active lately,
working hard, I just wish that you keep up this mood and pace.

Your sketchbook's great! You've got a really interesting way of putting different pieces together like drawing 2 in post 432. Coooool stuff.

    thanks everyone!

Just a small update for now, I redid the portrait from previous page. I felt the drawing was way to ... hmm not sure what the exact english word is that i'm looking for, I guees too "clean" or "goody-goody" So i tried again and losened up, without trying to get everything perfect in pencil first.
I personally like this approach a lot more, I'm curious what you guys think tho.
Gonna try to redo colours as well with the tips I've been given.

update on the colours, I first made it in grayscale and then coloured everything basicly in the same colour range because, well...you know... I'm a chicken! So now he looks like he's made out of some weird type of clay or something.
Also, the shadows are without refference and drawn with my mouse (i don't have a wacom anymore ) so I'm sure there are a lot of mistakes in there, if you could point them out it would be highly appreciated.

hey Lav! thx for stopping by the old sketchbook hehe. i haven't been in here for quite some time myself but i can say much has changed! i've noticed from your earlier posts you seemed to pursue a concept/design path but now i see a variety of things. looks as if you're steering more into an illustrative path which is awesome. also, your abstractions in your imagery is quite refreshing to see-- especially on this kind of forum!

well, keep drawing and don't stop! Happy Holidays my friend!

Hey, drawing and painting with a mouse is not easy at all.
And do not worry, the last painting is looking absolutely
fine, and you did a great job. Maybe you should use more
values and he will then less look like as you say a 'clay'.
Either way, I am happy that you are painting even
when you do not have a tablet, that is a real spirit.
I hope you are feeling fine and that you are all right.
I wish you all the best for Christmas.

@Dark_Eyes, are you Santa in disguise? :o Cheers mate (eventho I don't think I deserve it but many thanks anyway ), and happy holidays!

@Teapo, thanks, and I'm not stopping, no-one can stop me!! mhuhahaha!! well...unless someone breaks my hands I guess. And happy holidays of course

@LtPlissken, Thanks and happy holidays to you too!

Zeh update for now. I find it very difficult to draw disfigured characters without reference, yet googling for it often give results one rather wishes to unsee. The best reference seems to be from old carnivale pictures of circus freaks or other anatomy drawings. I got my inspiration from Arturo Rivera, if you haven’t seen his work already I advice you to look it up, the man’s work is brilliant.

Well you should experiment with your coloring, specially since it's digital you won't ruin your drawing :V I wish I knew how to help you but I have no idea about color either :C
But I think you should add some saturation on the shadow just so the skin color won't look so dull.

Thanks for stopping by my SB. I really like the composition in this one:

    http://www.conceptart.org/forums/att...1&d=1324681223

Your work has thin lines with lots of character. Very nice.

To answer your question the material for the sculpture was Super Sculpey, some metal wire (any art shop or hardware store), and tin foil, scrunched up and wrapped around the wire so I'm not using so much super sculpey / clay.

    Thanks voodoo mama

I couldn't focus on studying so worked in my sketchbook instead, which is also for school anyway. I wish I had more time to do studies tho and once again it was obvious that I suck at painting...ah well, just gonna try harder then i guess

The first drawing is inspired from the movie the Assassination of Jesse James[..], and I've seen several people here on CA drawing poses with arms and legs going to different directions every time so decided to try it as well on the second drawing, it's really fun i'll try it more (unless someone trademarks it :o)

Anyways, gonna try to push myself harder after the exams

    hi lav,

i realy like that you´re afraid of nothing when sketching.
your lines got a nice flow. maybe get some more depth into your pieces
and do some more f.e. perspective environment stuff

@Kristo Novo, thanks, I really don't like doing environment tho, but I'll try to add it more into work
@Jonn, thanks, more octopus coming up.

I have to be honest, I'm not fond of my recent updates, but I'm blaming them on the lack of time during the exams >.< gonna get my ass back in gear after this month!

    Happy new year Lav
i love the variety & creativity in your sketches and the latest don't disappoint. that portrait in post #435 looks good, it's certainly much less "goody-goody" than the first i hope you can get your wacom replaced replaced soon it's not easy coloring with a mouse. great to see you experimenting with more mediums, i can't wait to see what you get up to when you have more free time in your hands, good luck with those exams

I like your nervous and expressive linework! Reminds me of some expressionism artists of 20th century. Keep up your hard work! ^__^
