Feeling at a bit of an impass decided to post some things I've been working on even though I don't know if I should, ( I may have to take it down) but I figure without the text, these pages are pretty inetelligible , flashback sequences. This is part of a package I've been working on for a submission, a comic story. Its length is 120 pages. So my goal is just over an hour a panel and a grid system of 6 panels for page. Why the Grid? Lots of reason, learn to walk before you run, I would love to get Creative with Panel design, certain panels are obviously better at some things then others i.e. a long thin vertical panel can be very efficient in portraying something very Tall like a building. But infinite panel variety can become overwhelming and often amateur storytellers ( myself) quickly become lost either breaking rules for the sake of a cool layout or sacraficing a story's readablility, creating something elaborate that takes the reader out of the moment. Also Frankly from a production standpoint, It becomes much easier to plan out if each panel is the same size.
This also allowed me to create each panel independenly at 400 dpi not having to fear file size, or any lag in photoshop. These panels were done using a modified version of Coro's storyboard video. Created from scratch in Photoshop, start to finish. A lot of thinking goes into the panels not just leaving room for wordballoons and text boxes but actually drawing in where the best place for them would be to lead the eye in he zig zag across the page (left to right, top to bottom) Even then I was modifying brush settings creating brushes till I found something I felt comfortable with around page 4 panel 2 I felt I found my right brush settings.
Comics are a funny beast, to be finacially feasible like most other art endevours time is a huge issue, how much to spend on a panel/page. At a certain point in your artisitic journey you can SEE the errors, (i.e. that perspectives off , that hand is drawn wrong) It just takes some tries to get it right . Hands off ? you may have to redraw it 3-4 times before its just right. However if you put a time line of a page a day , which translates to a panel in just over an hour, then you get to the best place possible and leave it hoping do better in the next panel. IT's HEARTBREAKING!

here's a few things about what i was thinking during that lighting scheme...
he's an indian/pakistani type of guy, so he has really reddish skin. the rim lighting is strong and yellow. but, i wanted there to be a hint of blue sky light coming down.
with a rim lighting condition, you get no detail in the yellow light--it washes out to almost white. what information you do get is just from the shapes, sometimes you get an indication of the side planes.
that means you're free to use the rest of your tonal range to show detail in the "shadow." this is usually counter-intuitive because we're normally used to simplifying shadow shapes and rendering in the light in most figure drawing setups. the rendering i did in the shadows was very basic. anything with an upward facing plane got hit with varying amounts of ambient blue light. anything facing down stayed the dark cool reddish color.
then i just popped the "shadow edges" of his face with a reddish glow to make the form turn.
anyway, that's the thought process i was using on that piece. i hope it helps!

You've already progressed so much on one page! Everything's looking great so far. Get some fill light in your most recent picture, its very dark and I'm having trouble being able to tell if she's high up in a tree or sitting on a log. The rendering of your building behind her looks very nice, simple and good lighting. Make sure she is more in focus than that though, because theyre on the same plane level we're losing the depth. I really like your action panels! Some great colors in there. Keep it up!
Damn, that is some mighty fine improvement since page 1.
Feet on the current WIP look a little off... they look as if they're focused on a flat surface plane, and yet, they're meant to be on a round tree trunk. Also, try and give the hand a purpose of being there... it looks like it kind of wants to be supporting weight, but also kind of wants to just be hanging, maybe gripping, maybe not... Give that area some love!
I love CA! the comments here + in the C&C section I posted this in really helped me out a ton!
I know its far but perfect but I've reached a stopping point, calling this one "finished" I'm moving on the next one. BIGGGGG thanks for everyone who commented!

Hey man, cool work here. That last piece is looking good, although there are a couple of weird areas, namely the left side. The hand has a tangent going on with those bushes, her underside of her leg has a tangent with the river, and the log also has a tangent with the river. This sort of flattens the left side.
She'd probably look more menacing if she was leaning forward more, the hand in front of her would then seem more natural as well.
just noticed you're finished with the piece and won't do any more with it, hehe. Hope you consider some of what I said.

This mornings warm up , yesterday I did a watercolor study, today I wanted to again but instead used one of my custom photoshop brushes "gouache brush" and my 6d pen I don't use enought ,whippped this out decided to use only the one brush, a good warm up. Last nite I accidentally saved that spiderwoman as low rez "forweb" version wipping out my hirez soo arghhhhhhh!

So Its been AWHILE! lots of going on's , Which I had some more "finished" pieces , but for now i'm just gonna post a Bunch of sketches. I've actually been drawing quiet alot (analog) pulling out the trusty col-erase pencils, bristol, vellium, even breaking out the lead holder and less oft used mech pencils dusting em off seeing what I could do with them. Pulling out my trusty but not used often enough winsornewton series 7 size 3 and my Rafael Kolinsky size 3 Brushes and getting some ink down. BUT i'm not posting any of that instead here's some really fun QUICK doodles, studies in ps, and the Awesome FREE Alchemy! Definitely check it out. Well, back to the drawing board!

looks great man.. i like how much you explore the digital media... you improve very quickly! i like the 103rd post :] do more finished stuff.. but be more consistent.. especially with light and depth.. it helps to simplify!
