    Icon IDW #81: Vehicle Interior

    IDW #81: Vehicle Interior

    Topic: Vehicle Interior

Background: For this topic, we're going to do something else: interior designs. Rather than focusing on the exterior of a vehicle, I want you to come up with a feasible and well thought out interior for a vehicle of your own choice.

The vehicle could be a car, a miliray vehicle (ranging from a simple truck to a main battle tank if you wish), or even a space ship or a fighter jet. It can be an existing vehicle -which means you'll have to redesign the interior- or a vehicle of your own design, it's up to you. What is important that the exterior design imposes some constraints on how the interior will look. It is not necessary to include the exterior design in your entry, but it might help with explaining your concept.

Usually, for car interior design drawings the designers use an underlayer from either a picture of the existing space within the car or a rough 3d model to paint the new design over. This underlayer acts both as a guide for perspective (as this is usually a very extreme perspective in order to get the whole interior in one drawing) and as a guide for the overall proportions in size and shape. Feel free to find or make your own underlayer this time, but make sure you make a new design on top of it rather than just tracing the 3d model.

Several things to think about as far as the interior goes: seat arrangement, controls, material, doors (or exit), storage space. You might need more than one drawing to show the whole concept this time.

    Brief:
    1. Design and draw an interior for a vehicle of your own choice!
    2. In this round, it might be handy to use an underlayer of a photo or 3d model of an interior as a guide for perspective and proportions.
    2. That's it... now draw!

    Deadline: Saturday, October 18

This means I close it on my sunday (GMT +1), on basically the same time as the last round. Since this is a fairly complex topic, I might extend this round a bit if people request it.

Just to clarify, when you say more than one drawing does that mean we can present more than one final sheet of 1000 pixels? Or cram 2-3 views on the one sheet.

evamonkeyn2: More than one view on one sheet preferably. Otherwise setting up the poll will be more work for me

For some more inspiration, try to look for interior shots of concept cars. They have usually a much more interesting interior than the final production cars. For example, check out the new Mayzda Kiyora concept: Mazda Kiyora photo gallery

Depending on how real you want to play this, i would suggest some ergonomic areas of concern. The angle of the steering wheel relaive to the driver and the recline of the seat. The link below has some great sideview of driver seated in vehicle to give an idea of current posture requirments, or rather what looks correct, but should not necessarily be followed.

the command deck of a submarine (with 12 crew members) is valid? or is it too big?
and what is the max pixel size of the final submission?
(and for the WIPs i must use one single post?)

Dhomochevsky: Yep that would be valid for this round. As far as I'm concerned, you're free to design the whole interior for the submarine The max pixel size is as big as you can fit into the attachment manager of CA, but I'd advise against making it bigger than 1100 pixels wide or 900 pixels heigh. I'd prefer it if you use one post for the WIPs, but if you make two or three that's not a problem either. I just don't want people to make a new post for every single brushstroke they do.

Oh nice! Ive got an interior that I need to refine further! These are alias models that I made awhile ago, I'll be sketching over these to push the design further. It was supposed to be for a mid engine Aston Martin but it doesnt look very Aston at this point. Let me know what you think of them!

Baze: Rule number one up there states that I don't accept old work not done for this activity. I don't have a problem with you using those renders as a guide for perspective and proportions, but just be aware that if the final result looks too much like what you have right now I might not take it to poll.

    wow yuggoth haha.
there is so much in that picture.
i think it needs some sort of more defined point for the eye to rest on and look. this can be achieved by either further pushing and pulling values in a specific focal point, or by dropping the details from the rest of the image. but it is a cool cockpit man!

my rendering hw for this week includes 2 computer renders so i may hop on this one tommorow =D
    later!
Do not, ever, under any circumstances, not have fun.

The natural leather look was a bit more time consuming than I thought it would be. Definently had fun doing it though!

Was muchos busy this week. I just did the pencils and flats, and wont get it done in time tomorrow, but i still plan to leave something in the vote topic a few hours after if thats ok.

Its 2 am, so most of whats in this will be changed.

The idea is about bringing much more excitement to cars , ordinary cars, making them more fun and exciting to drive even at normal safe speeds. The main two prongs to that are the transparent appearing areas in the bottom half of the doors and the footwell, which are actually oled screens behind a textured transparent membrane, giving the front of the car a more open feel to the road, allowing you to see more movement in your vision, like in a go kart. The second is the fact the since it uses a stick rather then wheel, the whole dash can be used to force wind through the car far faster than the speed at which its travelling, giving the impression you are driving much faster than you are on the way to do whatever insufferably mundane day to day task that is forcing you to drive around in your reasonably priced family car.

Note, the image attached is not being submitted as a final.

wish i had more time... i spent far too long nitpicking on aspects of the internals of which most got covered up anyway! might throw in the line version w/o the cutaway and stuff later in my recap post in the final thread just to prove its all there /o\

i was going to use the form of a prior IDW to detail the internals of, but since i had never done this before i settled on a simple APC i did for awhile ago. i know the lighting isn't what it should be though, haven't done all that before, and spent more time on the lines than on the rendering.

warning... might look better in grayscale T_T

    details to bring to poll:

designed for light action, peace keeping and medivac, this apc's rear cargo was designed for the maximum amount of modularity. the bay of the rear includes a rail system allowing a large variety of cargo to be stored. demonstrated here is a standard crew attachment with room for 8 soldiers. the two closest to the front man the upper turret and navigate while the 6 others can fire from their position inside or can slide down the firing slit's armored shields and take a break.

    etc etc

Legato...your submission is hella good. Loving the render and the detailing on the pilot's screens..

evamonkeyn2's render is, even though it isn't finished, looking awesome too.

Not too happy with my final outcome, posting it more for critique and advice than anything else. Wasn't sure on what direction I was going in, which I think shows..... If you have any crit/advice I would love to hear it.

    Thanks.

I'll close this round a little later than originally planned (meaning, a couple of hours to go still) in the hope that more entries turn up and because there's stuff here that needs finishing first before I get to setting up a poll

The Veganarchist Syndicate of the 6 Stars from 2075 uses walkers for patrols and missions on the outer regions of their territory.
This model named Flower Kangaroo has anarchistic elements in its controls, as u can see that there are many ways to steer several limbs or weapons or to switch the hole mech to autopilot. Even though there is always at least one pair of a analog and a digital control.
The pilot can choose of automatic buttons and joysticks to drive the walker like a car or something or sHe can atache her\his arms and legs to analog splints to control the weapon pylons, pliers and legs by movement copy of the pilot.
As they are anarchists, its absolutly no problem that the pilots have beer bottles and porn pics in their cockpits; most of them don't drink, but carry that stuff with them as symbol of liberty , cause it's forbidden in the United Unions of the Earth.
The symbols of the Veganarchist Syndicat are the marguerite, the red star and the orange rocket, which stand for ethic ways of live, anarchistic governance and thermonuclear blastpower, which are the 3 basic columns of the Syndicate.

That's as finished as she is going to get. Once again the concept here is of a family electric car who's interior is meant to make the most mundane of driving trips more exciting, by the use of oled displays in the bottom half of the doors and footwell to open up as much of the 'cockpit' of the car to the road as possible. The lack of dash instruments allows the two main dash sections to act as air ducts which funnel air from the front of the car, where petrol cars would have intakes for the engine, and mush this air at high speed at the driver and front passenger to increase the sense of speed and thus driving enjoyment.

To be honest i knew the second i saw the apc concepts that winning the challenge would be nay on impossible. That and the fact i sailed over the deadline means even though its finished i'd rather not put it up for vote.

Evamonkeyn2: It ain't finished until I say it's finished, so I think I'll put yours in the poll if you don't mind (if you do mind, pm me and I'll remove it from the poll )

That said, I've been royally late with closing this one mainly because I was and still am kind of busy. High time to end this round though.

Edit: Poll is up, check it out here: IDW #81: Vehicle Interior - Voting
