So I thought this life drawing session went better than some of the previous ones. It was the fifth session this year, which is better than any other year I've done. I missed one session because the model didn't show but I'm going to make it up with one of the long pose sessions in May and try my hand at painting the figure.

    Attachment 1469416

I think I'm starting to see slight results from all this practice. I should be able to make it to about 16 more sessions this year and I'm interested in seeing whether the pictures at the end of the year will be any better than the ones at the beginning.

I've also finished the first newsprint pad! Excitement! I think I'm going to cut out the better pages, try scanning them for slightly better reproduction, and then recycle the thing.

I made it out to paint last Sunday. Found this weathered building in one of the industrial areas:

    Attachment 1469417

It was a lovely day but I only spent a couple hours out because I forgot the sunscreen. I'm going to finish it up from photos. I'm trying to use more neutral colours, hoping to avoid that cartoony look. I think the head-on angle of the building flattens everything out, but I couldn't find a different view that had all the interesting bits in it (the tree, door, and the yellow paint showing where the stucco had crumbled) unobstructed, that didn't also have me sitting in the middle of 97th street.

I was hoping to get out again this weekend but it snowed today, which makes things awkward with the water-based media.

    New kids' illo in progress:

    A couple of sketches.

This woman appeared on a commercial while I was trying to watch Youtube. She's apparently the production designer for Game of Thrones.

She has a wonderful face that lent itself to silliness.

    More Youtube-inspired sketching:

    Some more-or-less finished work.

Horses, from a photo I took:
    Attachment 1476505
    Coloured pencil on paper.

I went to my first long-pose session yesterday:
    Attachment 1476506
Acrylics on masonite, about 12x16" I think, 3 hours.
Could have gone better but it could have easily gone a lot worse. I think I'm going to try to get this one into the figure drawing show.

The last of last week's figure studies:

    Attachment 1482867 Attachment 1482868

    Finally finished this thing up:

    Attachment 1482874

Pencil crayon on Canson Mi-teinte paper. No more leafy backgrounds. Never again!

I'll be painting tonight and possibly tomorrow, and on Saturday my comic shop is bringing a horse in for a life-drawing session. That should be exciting. Or at least weird and special.

Marty the Horse was very calm throughout, although nobody held him particularly still and everybody wanted to pet the horse so some of the sketches underwent heavy editing as I went.

I even got to sit on Marty for a few minutes. I haven't been on a horse since I was 14. They are very tall.

This was a Western saddle, lying on the ground. I don't think I did the best job indicating form:

Next month they're bringing in a cow! Excitement! I've also requested a llama and a goat. Hopefully I'll be around for those and not on vacation.

Some pen & ink landscapes I'll be selling at the art fair this summer:

    Attachment 1493906

These are about 4.5x6.5", done with a crow quill and brush. From various photos I've taken in my travels. I think the first two were from around Banff, the last from the Badlands near Drumheller.
