Nice hand studies, and that last one with the girl and the snow has a lot of mood to it. Rock that wacom pad!

man the way your controlling the value to enhance composition in those spaceman pieces is badass. Thanks for that.

CallOps- Thanks! The cleanliness is all a cheap trick.. those suckers started out really messy.. just blocking in the shapes. Will do on the updates!

Katzenminze- Thanks, the spaceman seems to be a popular one. I've been thinking of going back and doing another soon. We'll see.

Buckster- Very true.. whole world is feeling it right now. I'll definitely try to get some progress shots up soon.. I have a bad habit of not saving my images in steps sometimes. Keep pestering me about it if I forget. My attention span is really short lately haha.

Mitchell- Thanks, I just checked out your sketchbook too, wonderful stuff!

    Mischeviouslittleelf- I'll try!

Tamte- Thanks, I feel like I'm only starting to get a handle on values... still a very long way to go . But that's the fun, right?

ozan- Those hand studies took longer than you'd think.. i started them all very rough and then cleaned them up on another layer. I'm actually really scribbly when I start.

Lunchtime sketch that I took home to polish up a bit. Just playing around today!

    Thanks guys!

Another doodle I started at lunch and worked up a bit more at home. Don't know where I'm going with any of these, but they're fun.

I remembered to save some steps tonight, Buckster. Don't know if this is informative at all, but here it is anyway!

hey mate, lovely to see your progress, I find her face very appealing, pretty indeed ^^

I really enjoy your colour choices, they feel very much like your own.
The post before this one rocked as well, your facial planes are tight.

I hope that things are well at CCP games and that the problems are not affecting too much.

Can I see more of your art somewhere? Like a game site with concept art or something like that? o_O

    Keep sharing the greatness.

    Cheers

Baze- Thanks! Although I dunno, if I'm going to go, might as well be in a spectacular way like having your spaceship explode

Peter Berkovski- Thanks, hope the step by step was useful in some way. As far as brushes, I just use the regular round brush squashed like an oval for probably 85% of the painting. After that I have a few custom brushes that I use w/ the smudge tool and to lay down opaque paint. But honestly there's nothing fancy about them. Some of the brushes I made, others are from packs I downloaded from conceptart. I can never remember which ones I liked, so I usually just scroll through the list and test them until I find something that seems like it will work for the piece.

Buckster- Thanks for the kind words. As far as seeing other work, unfortunately anything I'm doing at CCP probably won't be seen for quite a while yet. Things are still pretty hush. So for now this sketchbook is going to have to be where it's at

yongs- No problem, hope you found it helpful!

gustavo- Well I did use my hands to paint it... my feet aren't nimble enough yet! Seriously though, thank you. I love working in digital but I always love to look at work that blends the boundaries between digital and traditional.

Thought I'd give CHOW a try this week. Here's Stilgar, from Dune. He was fun to paint, plus it finally motivated me to read the book!

    Wow- beautiful pieces.

I feel like a total amateur ( which I guess I am .. ) I can only dream of being anywhere near as good.
What advice can you give to someone who has a hard time learning from the online tutorials and written guidance using free software - which I think is very good and a rather cruddy graphics tab?

I shall keep coming back and seeing the updates.

    Foo

Twitch, how many layers do you usually work with ? Ive been working with photoshop, but Ive just used it for art manuplitation (scanning the things I done in some medium and then doing something with it), Iam a little antsy about using photoshop for a painting program, I just dont know where to begin. Alot of peps say your gonna suck when you start using it but I want to be real good when I start using it, since I paint with oils, watercolor, etc, I wouldnt think that it wouldnt be so hard to use photoshop.

Look, Iam diet drama, want to spend tha night dont bring pajamas, man there's so much heat beneath clothes, you see me !

JesArt Sketchbook, go have a gander..

Foofea- Everyone has to start somewhere. I had a good friend in college who never touched a pencil and one day he decided he wanted to draw. A year and a half later, he had shot past me by a mile. I'm still trying to catch up The dude would eat, breathe and sleep art. If you're worried about the tools right now, just concentrate on pencil and paper. You don't need anything fancy. Work up your drawing skills, take some figure drawing classes, etc. Study from any books you can find. That's how my friend got so good anyway, and it's the same thing that's been helping me. Any fundamentals you learn about values, anatomy, composition, etc. will transfer over to digital. Keep the sketches coming in your sketchbook and try to slip in some studies as much as possible, not just imagination work. It can be tedious from time to time, but it completely pays off.

midknight523, monotony, Hive_mind, algenpfleger, Dan Valkar, Christoffer, maeshanne- thanks for the kind words!

thirdeye- I'm working on it And thanks for the vote, much appreciated!

    Nubb-

Bushido- Glad you like that one. I'm sure I'll end up doing something along those lines again.. I always like that type of lighting. Sometimes too much haha.

JesArt- Just dive in and start playing around! It'll take some getting used to, coming from traditional paints. There's things you just can't do. But digital has its own advantages as well. I'd say just start dabbling and posting your results, even if you think they suck. NOthing helps you progress like some good feedback.

Oh and as far as layers... I usually only work on one layer at a time. Usually I'll add a few temp. layers for things like overlay, multiply, color dodge, etc.. or to just test something out if I'm not sure it's going to work. But as soon as I think it's okay, I habitually collapse everything down to one layer. DON'T DO THAT! Hahaha. Believe me, if you can learn to work in layers and keep you things organized, it'll save you a lot of headaches down the road. I still haven't learned my lesson. Do as I say, not as I do

trevor- Ah c'mon, I think this upcoming Chow will show you're the one who's going to be doing the ass kicking. Things aren't official yet, but fingers crossed. And hellllllll yes on the lunchtime speedies.

Did some sketching on autopilot tonight... this is what happened.
