Wizard solves writer's block (updated 1 Oct)

This is half exercise, half good times. I'm working on body language as well as facial expression and figure why not throw in some nifty magic juju effects?

I think what I'd want to know for this project is:

    Does the pose 'read' clearly?

    What glitches stand out?

How can I make it even more dynamic?

    Thanks for your help!

It looks a bit monotone, maybe add some color to the character to seperate it more from the background.

I agree with the post above...changing his coat colors to be brighter will help make him pop out better. Also you need more highlights on face and hands of the light reflecting from the lightning bolt.
As for the pose, he looks more like he's screaming in terror or surprise in reaction to the book. I suggest a different pose to show that he is directing the lightning bolt at the book...have the book lower and his hand pointed straight at the book.

I can't tell if he's casting the spell or is a victim of it. He looks sort of surprised, but sort of determined as well. His body language (chest out) says he's casting, but his arms are drawn back, which says victim.

His mouth is open, but is he yelping in surprise, or is he yelling the spell?

    Nice electric magic though!

Holy wow! I was just comparing what I posted here to what I did in Photoshop and what you're looking at is much darker. Did I mess something up? In the original, you can see the robes just fine and his skin tones are a few shades lighter, though it is pretty monotone anyhow.

Tripper--yeah he's yelling the spell and busting through a bad case of writer's block at the same time. I was going for intense. I hope I didn't cross the line into constipated lol

Mad Cross--I see what you mean re: pose. If he had the book on a table, say, and was aiming a spell at it, it probably would read better as 'magic coming from wizard'.

I made a simple change in levels to get this image very close to the way it looks in Photoshop and PSP. It might be a hair lighter, actually. He pops out the way I wanted him to and now you can see my other faults! Yay! If you had to hold back just cause you couldn't see anything, let 'er rip.
