Pete Smith Sketchbook - life drawings and other work

Hello, thought I would create a sketch book and post some of my recent work. Last year I did a painting course for one year which was fantastic. I started to do a lot of life drawing in pen and ink which was a great challenge. Here are a few images from some of my sketchbooks.

I am now doing a lot of life drawing digitally - I will post some of these shortly.

    Comments very welcome.
I am now beginning to realize how much I don't know.

I like them. You're coming in with a good head for the proportions of forms, which is a massive advantage over most people. You handle the outline and colour well also. I'm very interested in seeing what your digital life drawings are like.

A lot of your pen hatchings are all over the place - not that that's necessarily a bad thing, but you can get more description of form out of the direction of the line if you think about them more carefully, rather than scribble. Like on Chris the Thinker's leg up above. If those lines followed the form of his leg more and joined up with no gaps and white spaces, it would look rather well.

Anyways, good start on CA. Looking forward to seeing more from you.

donalfall: Thank you for your encouragement. My drawing style tends to fluctuate between tight and expressive which probably comes from the fact I am still undecided between fine art and illustration. So I will just keep practicing for now.

    first attempts at digital sketching

Here is a first attempt at digital painting from life. I had already done a few quicker sketches before this one. It took about 40 minutes. I will also try to upload a SWF showing the creation - hope it uploads OK. If it works and its useful I will post more.

    comments very welcome.

    2 hours life drawing today

This is the result from todays life drawing class, done digitally with painter using a very simple set of tools. The background is a scan of a print that I did last year. I will edit and upload the screen recording later.

    Comments greatly appreciated.

    Screen recording

OK here is the screen recording of the final picture from the session. Can't see how to embed SWF in post other than as an attachment link & that seemed to be timing out for larger files, so I have hosted it on my site for now.

    Life drawing from Saturday

doudou & thespianmonsalvo: thank you for your encouragement. Appreciated.

Here are another couple of drawings - from life. Starting to enjoy working directly like this. Have been trying to keep the tool set very simple and relating to what I would do if I was working traditionally. I think this week I will start to expand the toolset slightly (I am wary of losing myself playing with all the tools that Painter offers).

I think a big challenge for me is going to be developing the ability to work away from life - I have been very focussed on working from the model so much recently.

If anyone has any thoughts on how to start developing imaginative drawing I would be delighted to hear it. It kind of scares me.

I will see about posting the screen recording from the session as well some time soon.

A couple of quick sketches fom Saturday life drawing class. Trying to slowly expand the range of tools that I am using with painter - added a couple of oil brushes and an airbrush.

the ones in the top row are 10-15 minutes. The bottom row ones are 30 minutes and 45 minutes give or take a bit.

Will shortly be starting a creative arts degree course - can't wait to get going.

Nice studies. All I can say is keep at it and maybe use some larger brushes for the initial first strokes/masses etc.
