was going through all my old paintings and found this one. totally forgot i did this. That thing in the middle is a mustache!!! I did it when I went to a University for a year and got really tired of the whole "art kid college scene" where everything was serious and had a double meaning. I painted this in spite of everyone there and just to add some humor in my class.
my idea was "Behold, it is Mustache!!!"
its ridiculous but I wanted to show it, sorry for the bad pic

ccsears has been helping me out a lot, here is a 30 minute sketch of Aldous Huxley, acrylic (burnt sienna), burnt sienna airbrush and white and dark brown colored pencil. Had a lot of fun and will do more once I get some more colors!!

looks good! doing monochrome with this medium can be a little tricky... i think you're using the medium right as far as i can tell.
the technical problem you're going to face is this: what do you do if you go too dark and need to lighten it? right now, you only have one choice--white colored pencil. that may work in lighter areas, but it might not work in darekr halftones, etc.
so, anyway, there's a couple more things you can do.
1) still use the white pencil very lightly, but then glaze over it with a coat of burnt sienna. repeat as needed, but beware of the surface becoming too waxy or the paint won't stick.
2) do the same thing as 1) but use more shades from the same color family. if the color variation seems too much, harmonize them with a thin glaze.
3) do some modeling in the light with white acrylic/airbrush too
i like this. you're off to a great start!
but be very very careful about using the white pencil on the shadow side of the head. the same thing goes when you do white and black charcoal on gray paper... the gray you get from mixing the black and white charcoal will not match the gray of the paper and will tend to confuse you. same thing with red conte and white on toned paper. if you mix the conte and white, you'll get an awful pink that won't fit anywhere in the monochrome. basically, you just have to think of a strategy for these situations and you'll come out okay.
next step for you is probably to repeat something similar, but use some white acrylic airbrush on the light side. also keep some darker pencils for shadow accents... possibly black, or just the darkest red you can find. (you'll probably need a little black, but not too much).
you'll find that this technique opens up a very very wide value range. black badger paint is just about as dark as you can find, and white is almost brighter than gesso. try to push or reinterpret your subject with a high range of value and see what happens!

after some more experimenting, i found that after 2 coats with the airbrush, the white pencil will pick up the burnt sienna, mixing with it to make a gross looking hue. But, not all bad today, i think this came out better than the last one

just messed with this one, literally right after I posted the Kipling one, i think that matte medium is harder to work with than just water. For instance this one is acrylic with water and the last few were with the matte medium. I think Im just used to gouache

I really like the last one. This is an interesting technique, and it seems like you're beginning to kinda make it your own with these last couple. Keep at it.

did this for the Lounge, havent messed with photoshop in a while. I did notice, however, that since ive been drawing as much as i can lately, that using photoshop was a little bit easier. Progress!

Those airbrush paintings are looking really good. That last digital portrait isn't as good as the airbrush portraits though, probably would've looked better if you'd refine some places some more, and used a harder brush overall, than having those dots of white all over.

another shot with the airbrush, i think it came out looking horrible and lost my patience with it. Anyway, a rose and some practice with colored pencils and airbrush. The brown one looks the best. As for the rose, the only way i can tell its a rose is because of its color, there are no details in it.

I like what I see, especially the experiments with traditional painting. The moleskine sketches are pulchritudinous (haha I just learnt a new elitist word), and not just because they are on moleskine

The airbrush and colored pencil portraits look great! Definitely do more of those. How was the workshop? I looked at the pictures you posted and it seems like it was overflowing with creativity.

So, yes I did have the opportunity to go to the Dallas worskhop and had an amazing time there. I learned so much and got to talk with some amazing artists and people. It gave me focus on what i want to do and what i want to do with my art. Ive learned not to draw absent mindedly, but to focus on what you are doing, and when you do that, you will actually progress as an artist instead of idly standing by.
Ive got a whole lot of notes Ill post later, but these sketches are post workshop, and i already see an improvement.
The first page was reffed, but the other were either all from the imagination or partly reffed (but barely )

yeah a double post but i want these sketches on top of the sixth page
ive got a lot of stuff ive been learning from Marshall Vandruff, Ill post some of my notes when its not so late and have some time
so just some pencils from the sketchbook. meeting wes burt and DanielC has inspired me to work on anatomy and rendering
a lot of these were from imagination, im trying to build an inventory so i can recall details when i draw them, especially the last one is all from imagination, which i consider a big milestone for me
