Since this gets asked so often, does the gang think we should have a thread of legitimate contests?
I'm thinking both weeklies(like the community activities here) and bigger things.
weeklies would be cool
Start the contest on monday with some kind of topic (transfiguration for example), and it ends saturday night at 11:59 pm, and voting takes place sunday. winner picks new topic, and then we start over.
Hyver refers to the flagship Community Activities http://www.conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=74
Creature of the Week
Character of the Week
Environment of the Week
Industrial Design of the Week, and
Panels of the Week
These are all weekly or two weekly contests to produce art. There are polls at the end of each contest. They can get you helpful criticisms. They are already set up and running. Most contests start on Monday so the Current ones mostly have a deadline this coming Sunday. The current deadline for Panels of the Week is October 5, 2008. Draw Pardner!
I think What MiniGoth refers too is an announcement thread concerning outside contests of interest. That might be something that resembles advertising and so I'd say Admin input is a good idea.

That's exactly it, Arttourney.
More, because there have been questions about which contests are worthwhile, and I'm sure people have entered - a place to share thoughts on who's legit, who's worth spending the entry fee on, etc.
I do contests from time to time, but usually only if it is hosted by a large reputable company. Even then, read ALL the contest rules...Sony recently held a design contest in which all entires instantly became theirs with no compensation (likely lawyer overkill, but still). I've never done a show/book where I had to pay money to enter. Not my scene and books like Spectrum/Expose are out of my league.
As far as finding them? Look up some art communities and bookmark their contest news areas. Do searches for the type of art you do + "contest." If you know of a company that does contests from time to time (wacom, prismacolor, autodesk), get on their mailing list.
Brilliant advice, Mirana!
I found out about a site from Epilogue.net that displays a variety of contests for several different genres of art. It's called Rockstar Contests. I haven't applied to any of the contests, but they all seem legit. Some have entry fees, others do not. It's free to register and you can bookmark the contests you like, and so forth.
Another place to keep your eye on is the Society of Illustrators. They actually have a call for entries right now.
I saw that "Rockstar Contests" thing last night and I have to say it suffers from the same thing that all "contest listing" sites do...it has nothing but juried, fee-for-entry gallery shows from places you've never heard of. I have better luck hitting up community news pages.
Sidetrack...I saw your work at D*C, Grendal! I recognized it immediately and the two artists I were with really loved your technique. I hope ya did well.
